IMAGINE going to bed one day with a migraine and waking up the following morning speaking in a completely different accent. That's exactly what happened to 27-year-old Verity, who has lived with severe symptoms of functional neurological disorder (FND) since she was 14: "It affects me personally with horrendous migraines, I get paralysis where my left hand curls up and my left leg and foot doesn't work... I black out when I have my seizures." Verity has experienced speech loss alongside her paralysis episodes, where she would be "trying to pronounce a word and then next thing you know I just can't speak." She has tried "every single medication that you could think of" with no luck - meaning she can only manage the symptoms of her migraines with high-strength painkillers and a TENS device. But two years ago, Verity took herself to bed with a severe migraine and woke up unable to speak - this time, when her speech did eventually return, she remembers hearing the voice of "somebody else." A visit to her family doctor with her mum later that day confirmed that Verity was now speaking in a completely different accent - overnight, she had gone from her original midlands accent to sounding like she was from the north east. Verity's mum Gail recalls the moment she heard her daughter talk in her new Geordie accent for the first time: "I admit, me and the doctor were so shocked that we actually started laughing." No matter how hard she tried, Verity could not bring back her old accent - and the change was noticeable: "Straight away, she couldn't say 'mum' - it was 'mam' - and then when she texted me, she realised that her brain wouldn't let her text 'mum'." Having never been to Newcastle or the surrounding area, Verity was as confused as anyone, noticing that it had even changed her "inner monologue" and caused her to dream in her new accent. It took her the best part of the last two years to receive answers from doctors and, in that time, she was regularly accused of faking her condition by people in public and online - after she started posting about her accent change on TikTok. Verity struggled with her confidence due to the backlash - but, finally, just months ago, she received an official diagnosis of foreign accent syndrome (FAS) from a specialist neurologist. This was the "leg to stand on" that Verity needed to deal with doubters and ever since she met another specialist neurologist, Professor Edwards, on TV whilst raising awareness for her condition, he has been supporting her too. His reassurance that FND and FAS are related and are both "a real thing that's happening" has given her the confidence to push on with her advocacy. With renewed confidence and motivation, Verity is more determined than ever to raise awareness around both conditions in order to ensure other young people with invisible disabilities like hers do not face the stigmas and misconceptions she has faced. Her message to those young people? "Just keep going, be proud of yourself and remember that life is really worth living."

Maybe her voice sounds deeper in her earlier videos but I didn't notice a dramatic difference in her accent either.

Migraines are no laughing matter!! I started with them when I was about 32. The first time I had one I was curling a clients hair with the curling Iron, I had a hard time seeing what I was doing. Then, later, I was doing a shampoo and realized when I began to speak, that the words would not come out. I only got the pain in the top back of my head and as long as I didn’t move too quickly, it would not hurt. Sometimes I’d have a burning sensation, auras of flashing lights, often starting out like a check mark that I could see then the arc of light like what you would see a person’s face being blurred out on a news report. It was like I had had a stroke, I’d have to struggle to get the words out and if someone tried to help me out with random words, it would make it worse and I’d totally forget what I wanted to say. Other times, the only way to describe it, I would get memory flashbacks, it was like a porthole to a different dimension would open up and it would start. It was verbal and it would be conversations that I had had in some point in time. It was like it was happening right then, when I’d try to remember where and when it happened, it would totally leave me and I was left frustrated and trying to remember what it was. Then, like a sifi movie, the porthole would close and I’d be left trying to figure out what just happened. About 9 years ago a client told me about “Daith Piercings” in the ears, apparently there is a pressure point in the inner cartridge of the ears that can control migraines. I had both of my ears done and for 3 weeks nothing. I still get them, but, nothing like they used to be. I get the auras of light but they are gone within 20 minutes or so. Have once in the 9 years had an issue with the speech, but, that’s it. What a God send that was. Maybe it’s mind over matter and maybe it’s fact. I do think if I have a large gage of wire put in, it might stop them completely. Sorry for the long hurrang, but, I feel so bad for t his young woman, they are NOT fun.

I had chronic migraines for years. I was bedridden. I saw neurologists, was hospitalized, etc. Then I found a doctor who finally ran the right tests. I was migraine free for around 4 years. Unfortunately, I have them again but only 1-2 per month (hormones). They also don’t last as long as before. I hope she finds relief because migraines are horrible 😢

I have everything except the change of accent, plus I have trigeminal neuralgia and other facial head neuralgias on my migraine side (the left). I have been diagnosed with Essential Tremors, and my seizures (now controlled with Marijuana and CBD) were said to not be seizures by American Drs 🙄, but EVERYONE who has witnessed them KNOWS what they are, I feel them before they happen I don't get much of a warning but enough to warn whoever I am with that one is coming, and I am offline, trapped in my body, afterwards. I can't move, talk, nor can I think coherently for HOURS afterwards. Drs here also seem confused by the facts that there is nothing on the scan, so I MUST Be Faking🙄🙄🙄. Unfortunately, unless we suddenly become Millionaires, my life and health aren't important enough for proper medical care, treatment, nor proper diagnosises. Seriously the level of care you get here is based off your income, ability to work, and health insurance. I'm unable to work and I am unable to get disability/assistance because I didn't work long enough and my husband makes too much. America is a sinking ship, Rome is crumbling and this election could start to save us or COMPLETELY destroy us and turn us into a dictatorship where there will probably be death sentences to anyone who opposes the elderly psychotic spoiled toddler. My health and healthcare is already bad enough, my insurance will not allow me to get my Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block twice a month like I NEED so I can at least help do things around the house. I am lucky if I get it every 3 weeks but usually it is 5-6 weeks, it doesn't work like it used to and I am Useless even with a fresh nerve block 😭. We are moving today and I am fighting Trigeminal Neuralgia attacks to help my husband, he isn't expecting me to do much, luckily he understands. My issue is Me, I want to do more than lay in bed all day in agony, with my blood pressure doing rollercoaster rides with the pain and breathing hurts because the air burns my mouth and throat, light hurts, air hurts, sound hurts, touch hurts... It sucks, my quality of life is WORSE than serial killers in prison 🫤. Hopefully in the UK you fair better, but I still suggest learning to laugh through the pain, gain a VERY twisted sense of humor where you find humor in EVERYTHING, watch cartoons and animal videos often. Because it keeps the Darkness (aka Depression ) that lurks in the shadows, especially when you have Chronic pain and illness, at bay. It still lurks and can still drag you down, but it is harder for it to consume you and steal your soul (ending the suffering permanently). I also getting a therapist who specializes in Chronic pain, even if you think you don't need it, do it l, it will help, trust me 😉.

Younsound beautiful and perfect to me. My daughter suffers with seizures and it isn't a nice thing I'm so happy you have your mom It's sad to hear how people treat you so differently. I hope one day soon it will change for you your voice and the seizures will all dissappear. To have the old voice again I'm sure you would like. You are a beautiful young lady ❤

I thought FAS was more a speech impediment, like, as in it's not _actually_ a foreign accent, we, as humans, just _hear_ the impediment as a different accent.

I have Conversion Disorder, which is a functional neurological disorder, and I get those exact same leg and hand lock ups..but mines on the right side most of the time. I also lose my speech the same way. Mine is brought on by stress or extreme emotions. It’s amazing to me seeing someone act the *EXACT* way I do as well…it makes me feel far less alone. Thank you for making this video 😭🥰

Counterpoint- as someone who has a history of migraine, Botox is used as a treatment for frequent migraines. It is injected into the back of your neck and occipital area of your head.

Have you tried cutting out carbs and going keto? It can help with migraines. Healthy fats (nuts, fish, avocadoes, etc.) are essential for the brain to function properly.
