As a trans woman, I have a lot of complaints about how Pride Flags look, and how many of them there are, some more ridiculous than the others. In December 2023, I took it upon myself to redesign a new DEFINITIVE set of Pride Flags!

The main problem with this entire project and presentation AND especially how you respond to criticism is that you clearly think you know better than everyone and if you had a button that turned all existing pride flags into your designs, you would do it without thinking about the people that are happy with the flags they currently identify with and the cultural impact those flags have had up until now.

Funny you should mention “turning all existing Pride Flags into a new design without thinking about the people who are happy with the flags they identify with, and the cultural impact they have had until now”, because that’s exactly what they did when they replaced the rainbow flag with the regressive “Progress” flag.

there are many reasons these flags will never be accepted but I think the biggest one is that, for the most part, people really love and identify with the pride flags as they are now. Why change a flag that is broadly popular among the community it is meant to represent? The trans flag in particular is totally beloved by the vast majority of trans people! We don't want to change it!

I for one would not like to use a flag created by an underwear fetishist who admits to have stolen her mother’s underwear, then escalating to random women’s at the laundromat. It’s also infantilizing that she chose baby pink and baby blue to stand for baby girls and baby boys. If lesbians can change a flag because of personal distaste for the creator, I can too.

I think a better term for GNC individuals would be Contramorph (Mix of latin "against" and the same greek "form"). Since it doesn't necessarily express two separate gender norms but rather opposes the ones set in place on the whole. This would encompass the broad range of expressing gender norms of just one gender all the way to expressing gender norms of differing cultures that are simply not considered at all in a given society.

This was a lovely exercise however it rubs me the wrong way that you find the q word so abhorrent; when it encompasses the wide LGBT+ community without singling out any groups. Also it is the term used for academic study and research. And maybe this is a language/cultural barrier thing because you're the first person I met that finds a word that's so comforting to many, to be just a slur and not a descriptor for the community.
@haleyhalcyon

It's very extensively documented that the Q-slur is a slur, and continues to be for many. The activists of yesteryear specifically chose it for its offensive and provocative nature. Oft-overlooked, denying that the Q-slur is a slur is tantamount to denying the history of LGBT people before us and the oppression and hurt that they have surmounted to bring forth the rights and protection we enjoy today.

Hi, those are very interesting ideas you have there! 3:42 While flags are used to create and "distinguish" a community, people also deserve flags that they feel are closer to their identity. I think sub-labels should keep their flags. A pansexual person is a bisexual person, and so is an omnisexual person. However, someone bisexual is not necessarily pansexual, or omnisexual. I think it's the same reason as to why you made a flag for non-binary people ☺️ 13:35 The original rainbow flag being loud and vibrant actually makes a lot of sense, considering it is the PRIDE flag. But yours is still pretty vibrant so that doesn't really matter haha, I love the way you brighten the green and blue colours. 15:23 The issues with "unstraight" lines is that it would be harder to makes merch or anything related to the flag since there is no colour "order" anymore. But I do agree that in term of symbolism, it's more interesting, the flags also feel a bit more eye stimulating! 17:58 OMG thank you so much for giving the colours more contrast I love that change. Never knew it was an overlap! I like the bi triangle, I never heard about it either So many interesting ideas for the trans flag! 28:51 Just a question, is this flag only for LGBT people or for LGBT+ people in general? As in, asexual and aromantic, for example? Because if it is the first, it feels a bit excluding and has no reason to exist, considering the pride flag already is a thing 😅 31:26 Wouldn't cutting the non-binary flag in two make it... more binary? Sure, those parts are uneven, but there are still two parts. Maybe you could try make it look less like there's a "cut"? If we ignore that, I like the design! (I also had a question, I hope I'm not being offensive, I see you censored q----, why is that? Is it a slur? English isn't my first language and I thought it was simply another word for "part of the LGBT+ community" 😅)

*Bisexual sub-labels:* The problem with those sub-labels is that they are born out of the biphobic assumption that “bisexuals only love binary gender”, which not only is inaccurate to how bisexuals are, but also denies the history or bisexual activism. “Pansexual” is at this point more often used than “bisexual”, and it’s like they think it’s a dirty word. Bi people already face so much erasure from non-LGBT people; I don’t want to encourage erasure from LGBT people too by legitimizing those labels. *color order:* The United States’ flag also has no color order and has a complicated design that isn’t all horizontal stripes. Yet there is no shortage of Stars and Stripes merch, like hats and cutlery and everything. “It’s harder to adapt to merchandise” is a moot point, and it just tells me that the flag is more creative and artistic than the horizontal stripe flags. *LGBT flag:* The LGBT flag is for lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and trans people. The extra labels tacked on after the T have been campaigned for, often in very toxic ways, but it only server to make the campaign and mission of LGBT rights more scattered and defocused. Not every minority needs to be LGBT to be taken seriously. Not every label is about sexual orientation or gender identity. “Asexuality is a sexuality” like irreligiousness is a religion and celibacy is a sex position. There is no place on Earth where it is legal to be asexual, nor you are at a systemic disadvantage simply for being asexual (and not for being single for life). *nonbinary:* I find it much less “binary” to have a cut off-center, but it’s not really a cut if you look at the middle stripe that connects the two. *the Q-slur:* The Q-slur is an offensive and highly charged anti-gay slur. The loudest activists have rallied for “reclaiming” it, but they ignore or flat-out deny that it continues to be a slur that is used to hurt LGBT people to this day. I say f**k that. “Q***r” is also linked to a well-documented history of advocating for pedophilia. Q***r theory first broadened the idea of “q***r” away from just homosexual, to include any sexual behavior deemed socially unacceptable. Unfortunately, that was done in order to include pedophilia. Prominent q***r theorist authors such as Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Pat Califia, and Gayle Rubin have all advocated for the rights of “boylovers” and/or the lowering or abolition of the age of consent. The Q-slur is so loaded with past and present baggage, that I believe the best course of action is to keep it taboo and forgotten, and turn it into a thing of the past, not keep the wounds open and freshly vinegared, as well as inject new political and exclusive connotations to it, further confusing the question of what “q***r” even means.

1. I don't believe that changing meanings of colors in the bi flag was necessary. I think we as a society should move away from pink = women, blue = men. 2. I was excited to see Ace and Aro flags and I am a little sad to see them not being here? I am curious as to why 3. As a trans person I don't really enjoy the look of the trans flag. I think the colors are too dark and muddy? Also I think connecting pastel colors to babies is kinda out there, sorry.

I think i definetly agree to a point with how pride flags are in some part made by some pretty awful people, but i do think alot of the flags here shouldnt really be changed such as the rainbow flag due to it's history Personally i like the gay and les flag redesigns. the one design though that i think is 1000% better than the original is the enby flag, but idk how it would look as a literal flag irl. but on the other hand flags like the transgender flag are too bland and the bisexual flag "feels off"
@BunnyValentine439
@BunnyValentine439 6 месяцев назад
I agree with some of your points, but the reason for the newer renditions of the unity flag is to fight back against bigotry that was still present in the LGBT community. Racism, & transphobia is still too prominent within our community. It was meant to be a reminder that they ARE part of our community to those who forgot. Furthermore the reason I personally identify with the Omni flag is it better communicates how my attraction works than just the Bi one. I do interchangeably use the Bi label in person depending on how knowledgeable the people I'm around are on LGBT stuff. To clearify this isn't really a critique of the video, more of a sharing of my perspective on things.
@haleyhalcyon
@haleyhalcyon 4 месяца назад
That's the intent. That is not the actual result. On the contrary, it's more racist to make people replace the rainbow flag with the additions, because it implies that those black LGBT people WEREN'T represented by the rainbow flag. You're saying that those weird black LGBT people aren't included by default, so you have to pander to them and add them in where they weren't before. In fact, adding the black stripe implies that black cishets belong in the LGBT community, which is a clearly ridiculous take. It's much more ridiculous with transgender people, who are represented by the T in LGBT already. Ever wonder why you've been seeing "#LGBdroptheTQ" way more in recent years? That's right, the "Progress" flag is driving this regression, because it expresses that the trans colors are butting into the rainbow where it didn't belong. Both of these prejudices are, of course, false; anyone who is gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender is included and represented by the rainbow flag. The "Progress" flag does not serve to promote unity, but only serves to cleave trans people and LGBT people fo color from their own flag.

That's right, the "Progress" flag is driving this regression, because it expresses that the trans colors are butting into the rainbow where it didn't belong." The idea that the progress flag is the driving force behind the exclusion of trans people from the LGBT is a bad take. The driving force is not a flag, it's hatred and failure to understand that we're still worthy of love, dignity, and respect. The progress flag was designed that way to push back against the idea that we aren't part of the community, not a subtle way to create division in an attempt to eventually excise us from the community as a whole. (Also, IIRC the black stripe on the progress flag is also for those that died during the AIDS epidemic and those that still living with it and the social stigma of it today. A group of people that even within the community is oft forgotten and overlooked, case in point.) Quasar plays with the idea of a diverse community, and states that the fight for inclusivity needs to come from both within and outside the LGBTQ community - from all spheres of society: "This new design forces the viewer to reflect on their own feelings towards the original Pride flag and its meaning, as well as the differing opinions on who that flag really represents, while also bringing into clear focus the current needs within our community". -Daniel Quasar, designer of the progress flag I think that taking an explicit reiteration of a fact to push a point home as instead an admission (implied or otherwise) that certain groups weren't part of the community before, is a misstep. It was less a "THESE THINGS ARE CLEARLY SEPARATE AND FORCING THEIR WAY INTO THE GROUP" and more "There are serious problems facing these parts of our community today, from both within and without, that need a focused effort from the group as a whole if we're going to see everyone safe in being who they are, as openly as they want." All this to say, your interpretation isn't invalid, symbolism is by nature mutable and very much subject to the context in which it exists, but I think it might be running away with the plot a bit.

All of these flags you designed look great (in my opinion), and even at a glance, I sort of got an idea as to what each color and symbol was meant to represent. The text explaining what each element actually represents gave me a sort of "a-ha" moment, because the design itself just made a lot of sense. I think it's awesome that your flags don't really need explanatory text to "get" for me, a cis-hetero male, who is completely out of the loop when it comes to LGBT symbolism and how they are (or should be) used. I found your design for the transgender flag to be my favorite out of them all. The twist really sold it for me, and it made me think "Wow, why didn't they represent transition more explicitly in the currently used flag like you did here?" Great video and flag designs!

There’s no real consensus on whether that’s the definition.
