I Have 2 Faulty Dremel 3000s. Can We Repair Them?

I bought a Dremel 3000 which worked fine for a while and then stopped working in the middle of a job. To get the job finished I went out and bought another - but now there is a problem with that.
Can we repair both of them or at least make one good one out of the two? Let’s see. NOTE: Please watch the whole video before pealing the stickers off the Dremel case.

Thank you so much for helping me fix my dremel. I have only had it for a week and just bought some new tips online when mine went dead on me. I decided to follow what you did and it was exactly the same problem. I fixed it!

Thanks for helping me fix my dremel, I had the same problem with the copper wire that you had. I uncoiled it a bit to have some slack rather than adding a piece to it, but the dremel works fine again now :) I only regret now watching the entire vid before taking off the stickers, would have cut them in half like you did on the 2nd one if I had known ;)

It seems to be a common problem on these Dremels.
@chuchuchip
@chuchuchip 2 года назад
You can use a hair drier to heat the label glue to remove it. Button would still work. I would get a keyless chuck & get rid of the collet system. All my Dremels have a keyless chuck installed. My oldest Dremel is from 1981, I own 4 - 3 wall plug & 1 battery. In fact after my father tried one, I had to hide the rest. He kept taking them. I'm a model railroader so on some projects I have a couple of Dremels set up for certain repetitive tasks so not to change bits back & forth, just grab the tool set up needed.
@TripplikitElectronics
@TripplikitElectronics 2 года назад
Great idea about softening the label glue with a hair dryer - I'll remember that. Using a keyless chuck sounds like a good idea. I use their "SpeedClic" system for little cutting disks which wear out quickly and that seems to work OK.

I had exactly the same problem- my trusty Dremel 300 suddenly stopped working when I was in the middle of a job, & I immediately rushed out & got a Dremel 4000 to finish it! Then later when I'd calmed down a bit, I took my 300 apart & traced the fault to a bad connection in one of the field coils. Then it developed a problem with the variable speed switch, so it needed one of those as well... So now, I've spent money buying a second Dremel plus the parts to fix the old one... Oh well, I don't mind, as I do love my Dremels. I did at least get some extra accessories when I bought the second one- so then I had to go out & buy a bigger tool box for the extra Dremel & its accessories!! 😝

I've had quite a few comments on this video from people who were, shall we say, rather disappointed with their Dremels so it's nice to hear from a fan. I did buy Demel on their reputation as a quality product and was disappointed to have has as much trouble as I have with them. Still, I've not heard anyone recommend anything superior and they're certainly better than the cheap alternatives.

It's always good to check ourselves tools when they stop working, sometimes we are able to fix them and save some money instead taking that tool to the technician 😊😊. About Dremel number 2, you can make a drill on the metal button, and put a screw in it, give shape to screw's head with a file so it fits into shaft's holes. This way moto tool ends almost like brand made, and tools can be changed as it's meant tio be. Well, that's what I thought to fix it and leave it as original as it can be.

@@TripplikitElectronics I can't imagine why, it's lightweight & powerful with a good range of speeds. On the down side, they do go wrong perhaps more than most. I have had at least 2 faults with mine, like a cut field coil connection & faulty speed control.

I think you can get a small chuck to fit a Dremel. Ideal for one with the shaft locking pin failure. Alternatively make a short pin tool that’s easy to hold against the tool in the palm of your hand. Thanks for the really useful video. 👍 PS, use some nail varnish to lacquer the bare wire. You can buy enamelled wire of course. An insulation check would be a good idea after that sort of work.
@TripplikitElectronics
@TripplikitElectronics 2 года назад
Since you mention it I might have a small chuck for a Dremel somewhere - I'll have to look for it. Not sure how reliable nail varnish would be as an insulator in applications like a high speed motor where it is subject to vibration and high acceleration. Yes, I agree I should have done an insulation test - I'll do it the next time I use the Dremels.
@woreno
@woreno 6 месяцев назад
thanks! i repaired my dremel doing the continuity test. the enamel wirings ends seems to break easily if the the motor got stuck. unfortunaly i had to solder those wires directly to the metal connector. we have to watch out to not let solder into those 4 connectors cavities, if so, the head piece won't fit correctly.

I guess they're like most things these days - not really designed to be repaired.

I was given the same model to repair. The same fault was discovered. I didn't extend the wire, but simply...well 'almost' simply...unravelled one loop that left me with enough to terminate it with the press in connector. I guess this problem is fracture caused by vibration of the core. I added a couple drops of cyano to the wire, and the same for the other three.
@TripplikitElectronics
@TripplikitElectronics 2 года назад
This does seem to be quite a common problem which probably does result from vibration. Un-looping one turn of wire, as you have done, will affect the performance of the motor but probably not enough to notice. The second repair on mine is still holding up.

I have a 3000 model, and have this strange problem. Last week ran great, i did some work with it, and today, i wanted to cut something with it. It worked like a minute, than it started going really slow. If i trey higher speed, it will go a bit faster with each speed, but still going slow and it’s impossible to cut anything. I tryed the brushes first, but they seem fine. Any idea on what might be wrong ?
@TripplikitElectronics
@TripplikitElectronics 2 года назад
There's not a lot to them really. If it's not the brushes, is there a problem with one of the bearings? Is something catching against the armature? You should be able to spot either of these because it'll make a graunching noise when running. Also when you turn it by hand you'll feel some resistance. If it's spinning freely I would suspect a problem with the controller electronics but I've never had reason to look into the electronics.

@channelsixtysix066 3 года назад
At least you didn't have the hated 4200 model, with the quick change chuck that NEVER worked. The 3000 is the update of my 395VX. That stator winding must have been nicked during assembly and broke due to vibration. That shaft lock, looks like an interference fit on the main shaft, rather than all one piece. Wonder if that can be replaced.
@TripplikitElectronics
@TripplikitElectronics 3 года назад
I did look at obtaining parts and I could find the whole shaft assembly for sale but not the shaft lock. As an interference fit I imagine it would not be easy to get off and on. I agree with you on the reason for failure - just a shame the can't be assembled with a bit more care.
@channelsixtysix066
@channelsixtysix066 3 года назад
@@TripplikitElectronics After watching a couple of videos on the stator winding problem, it all breaks the same way. I have the 4000 as well as the 395VX. As a preventative measure, I have decided to take them apart and put polyimide tape along the wire so that is does not vibrate when the motor is running. Thinking about it a bit more, work hardening is probably the cause of the wire becoming brittle, then snapping, rather than assembly damage.

Has anyone noticed that the speed/power switch is slightly erratic at lower speeds (between 2 & 4)? Mine occasionally won't even start spinning. I have to go back to "power off" and again to 2. Also, once the selector is at 2, the speed seems to change on its own over time. Not by a lot, nevertheless, it's inconsistent, and it keeps increasing on its own. It's my second Dremel. I sent the first one back for exactly that reason. Is that anyone else's experience? Thanks
@TripplikitElectronics

To be honest I'm a bit of a hooligan and always use mine at maximum speed. It sounds like the speed control is some kind of a potentiometer with a bad contact. Maybe try squirting some contact cleaner into the switch / speed control. If I have either of mine apart again I'll have a look at how the controller works - just out of interest.
