I Have a HUGE PROBLEM With STORMCAST Models

Honestly it's really annoying. When the Stormcast Eternals came out with the release of Age of Sigmar, I was HYPED. I mean, it got me back into the hobby. That start collecting box still has insane value built into it. For one reason or another, I've always had an issue painting Stormcast Eternals. I really don't know what it is, they just aren't that hard to paint. BUT, I kind of stumbled onto a few reasons why I have been feeling this way, and it really came out when I decided to, for fun, paint one of the new Dominion marines while rescuing some older Sigmarine sculpts. It was so NIGHT AND DAY that I changed the entire structure and script for this video just to share my thoughts.

The colder the gold the more gaudy and cheap it looks. Take the lowrider/hotrod trick and set a base color of a shade of pink. It makes the gold/yellow look Fuller and warmer which is a lot more realistic. Teal/aquamarine can be used for silvers with the same effect but cooler rather than a warmer tone like in the gold.

Wow coming from gundam models, I've never seen someone just slap so much panel liner over an entire model to shade it. That's a cool effect I need to borrow.

Understand how you feel about the gold colored armor. When I received a free stormcast from GW shop, looked for other painting styles. I liked a more traditional mid colored steel look. I used the Hallowed Knights as a template, changing blues to purple stained steel and gold to a dull brass. Cloth became a mid purple, while other areas became a brown or red leather color. I was surprised that I got a lot of positive reaction to this style. Happy painting to you!

having stormcast army myself, have to admit I find new models allot better for painting, old ones I'm never happy how they turn out. never been able to put my thumb on it till you pretty much sum it up.

Your "stonecast" were the only time I'd ever actually liked Stormcast minis. They're still not to my personal taste, but the new sculpts are definitely easier on the eyes than where sigmarines started. Nice job!

As a person painting a Stormcast army at the moment; while a lot of them are the classic "older" style, the new Thunderstrike armor and style is so much nicer to look at and paint. Sadly, of course, they have the Primaris Space Marine issue of limited options per model - no options for greatweapons in your troops vs. the older ones. And, of course, the only one I've actually used on the tabletop so far was the Knight-Vexilor with that awesome banner, and I can't even say I know how good he is because he died instantly to a Doomwheel. As a Stormcast player; I agree completely. The old models physically have to be subassembled to be painted well; while these new ones are a joy to paint up.

I agree, the blue and gold of standard Stormcast has always struck me as too fancy, but I love what you did with those dark/moss-covered ones.

This was a very good video. I appreciate how you put a voice to what has bothered me about Stormcast since 2015. They are generally tedious to paint. The exception for me was the video(s) on "Stonecast". I took that and ran with it! This week I finished Phase III (all the new stuff) of my own version of Stonecast. It took me quite a bit longer than 18 hours to finish but way faster than if I had painted them traditionally. I don't know how many points, but there are 170 models that took only a couple of hundred hours to complete. Thank you for this video, the Stonecast video, and all the other stuff you do!

I feel like the Stormcast are a dog's breakfast of iconography. Lion heads, thunderbolts, hammers, comets, death masks, skulls, hourglasses, birds, dragons -- Compare it to the Space Marines which have one or two elements tying them all together like the Aquilla, and each chapter has its own iconography.

All of that and then also some aspects that are just.. hard to make sense of like the weird crystal phioles and boxes on Sequitors and Castigators. They're just additional tatt that doesn't even look all too conventional (like a normal drinking flask, for example) so your brain has to process that and that makes it even messier.

Good point with the stance of the models, man! I'm currently painting up the Cursed City models and I initially thought I'd HATE painting the skeletons, because they are pretty detailed, but.. they were a joy to paint. They all had their shields and spears at angles where you could relatively easily get to. I had to finagle with the backsides of their cloth flaps a bit, but other than that they were just awesome to paint up, because I could reach the spots properly AND their breastplates were laid bare, so I had something to focus on as an attention grabber.

Hi, first off I love this channel. I'm getting back into painting miniatures and you have motivated me to try the idea of rescuing some old school eBay buys. What woukd you recommend as a cheaper option for the sonic wash paint stripping thing? And can it work with plastic models too?

Have stormcasts & seraphon. Night & day of how much I enjoy painting them. Stormcasts felt abit like a chore. Seraphon I had alot of fun with. I switched colours after a few models. The mixed scale colours feels like they're differing species of reptiles under the same banner. Love the seraphon so much.

I really like the new Stormcast sculpts. They don't feel stocky. The only thing I dislike, granted I hated this throughout their range, is that damn Mask-Helmet thing they have.

This is reminding me of two things; first, I have a bottle of that Tamiya black liner that I need to use more often, and second? I've several Warmachine Protectorate of Menoth minis that have been sitting on my table for a good couple of months now, and the reason for that is that, well, they're intimidating prospects. Their sculpts are extremely busy with tons of little details, and painting more than one or two of those at a time gets tedious as well as bothersome, even. This is making me want to buck up and finally finish the two warjacks (mecha) and the four heavy infantrymen on 40 mm bases so I can sell the lot on eBay, at last. Good work as always, Casey!

I rly love the SCE sculpts. My favorites are the 2nd Edition ones (Sequitors and the like). BUT(!) I rly dont like working with TMM paints. Note: I said "work", not "painting", as it has barely what I consider real painting to it. So I sit here on, dunno, 3-5000 points of SCE and have no clue, what to paint them. 😅😭

I feel ya for sure, metallics can be a pain. A great alternative for SCE is the Teal of the Celestial Vindicators. Really cool and vibrant without very much metal at all. I've often thought about doing that army because it avoids metallics almost completely.

@@eBayMiniatureRescues Definitely a good Idea. I was thinking about some SCE in Salamaders style with NMM gold trims. I rly like that green armour and if only a few of them would, from time to time, go bananas and scream "why have you done this, horus", I would propably collect them instead of my Blood Angels. Besides that: I really like your channel. Pls keep up the good work.

Gold can be made to look good but its mostly about shading and tone. As others have pointed out, a cold gold looks a bit gaudy. Using something like retibutor gold, skullcrusher brass etc with liberator gold as a highlight with recess shading using black AND brown for that tone and depth work very well I've found

Casey, some questions: Do you satin/gloss varnish before the panel liner? Also, it looks like the panel liner is oil based, so it could be cleaned with a q-tip and mineral spirits after, correct?

Just started painting a Stormcast army. I’ve undercoated with leadbelcher and then dry brushed retributor armour. This gives them an almost old bronze colour. I dropped the traditional blue colour for a red on the Shield an shoulder pads and I’m pretty happy with how they are looking. I also paint shields separately when possible.

I actually like the brighter Stormcast color scheme, but it's still fun to see people do it differently. I really liked that dark stormcast army you showed. I found your "turning stormcast models onto stone" video, but did you do one for the painting the whole army? I'd love to see that.

I think they need knightly helms. They already have human heads, to repeat that with their helmets feels really redundant. Or their bare heads should look more like ethereal lightning, like the suits are exploding with energy

I’m not a big lord buff, but I’m pretty sure when they wrote them originally the Stormcast were basically animate armour fused with the soul of lightning. So like, they weren’t actually people. That’s why their helmets had faces, it was because there wasn’t an actual body underneath. I love their bare head models though, so I don’t mind so much that they’re people now

Color wise I think they should be sliver/bronze and blue. With gold and blue being commander or solders of note. Because gold in fanasty means your badass. but if the grunts are golds. Well when every one is the bad ass. No one is the bad ass.

I feel like your use of tamiya panel liner is an extremely expensive version of a thin black oil wash. I'm pretty sure it's just an enamel based oil.

Yeah it does the same thing, though the enamel, I feel, holds together a little stronger than making my own, and the bottle is only $4.67 on Amazon which is a great price point for a pre mixed black oil wash. I’ve had my bottle for probably 2 years, and I use it quite a bit. Of course if you have the black oil paint and mineral spirits than you can make your own all day long!

Since a lot of people tend to call the Stormcast "Space Marines for AoS" I wonder why there is so little variety. I know people love their Ultramarines but there is a lot more going on. If I'd get to paint some Stormcaats I'd try Black Templar Black, White and Red approach or if I'd want to go the fantasy style maybe look at some WoW Paladin Armour sets. Maybe more Red, Yellow/Gold and Black instead of the Gold and Blue.

I think another issue is there build, and a lack of contrast of it. For example in 40k there are normal human. because there are normal human the marine bios build stand out more, and makes them feel more powerful. For example if there where normal knights to defuse the gold I think the gold would not look as cheep

made for molding and gaming also painting, just small designer flaws in these. XD older ones were more handmade looking, for my taste maybe bit too much, i like em both, could be better in terms of molding quality and ready to painted out of the box.

i have 1 free stormcast eternal from my local gw, I've not painted it yet and don't really know if i want to, I don't like the head because it doesn't feel like a character, I'm toying with the idea of removing him from the base and painting him as a statue for other games or leaning into the fact he doesn't read as human and kitbashing him into a warforged or steam powered robot

I'm always very conflicted with Stormcast. I like the idea of them, and I've often been excited to paint the models when I have them, but after painting I don't think I've ever been as satisfied with them as I hoped.

I've seen some damaged, incomplete Stormcast models on Mindtaker Miniatures going for cheap (because they're damaged and incomplete). Your "Stonecast" paint scheme seems like a decent way to rehabilitate those models, even if they remain broken. It just makes them look like they're statues, some of which have seen better days, animated by magic or possessed by the souls of Stormcast warriors. (Or maybe Stormcast who got petrified sometime in the past, by some kind of basilisk or ur-gorgon, but regained the ability to move later on).

I think the man issue is the helmet. The human face mask looks good on one or two mages. But on a whole army is has creepy uncanny feeling to it. Kind of like mark 1 gold comic iron man. But with zero charm. Also in the comics his suit is meant to be creepy. and is refenced as being creepy and unnerving serval times. while theses bois feel like there just meant to be cool. and not creepy

Is AoS easier to start playing? I'm only starting in the hobby and AoS for some reason seemed like the more complicated side of Warhammer. Maybe because most battle reports are for 40k /shrug

I find its easier to learn than 40k, Main rules are bout 4 pages or so long, pretty simple ones at that. Army books add more complexity, but it varies from army to army. I also find it faster to set up and play.

I love the overall armor of the new stormcast armors, but i still don't like their helmets. If i ever make a stormcast army, im giving them all helmetless heads

I'm mostly alright with the helmets, I've seen some good headswaps with other types of helmets that look better though. Going fully no helmet is a cool idea, it will give the army a super unique look!

Very interesting video! To me Stormcast alsways looked like knockoff 3rd party Space Marines. Which is why I was never realy interested in painting AOSmodels before. Even though the sculps (of aos in general) are of very high quality, Stormcasts are just another army of plumb oversized musclemen in comicly thick armor, fielding impractical oversized weaponry. This to me is not interesting and has no place in a medieval inspired fantasy setting I would be invested in. That said I am happy for anyone enjoying the models or lore of Aos. Happy painting!

I'm painting up my new Stormcast models and LOVE them. They're just so good. Light years better than the previous generation which I also painted and did like. Just the lack of those awful shoulder pad gaps alone make them better.

That's great!! Right now it's tough shipping from outside the US, I have to look to Canada most of the time for the best deals. Hopefully it will even out and I can get good deals from across the pond again.

Your Stonecast Eternals was the reason i even start looking into AoS. I did even make some stonecast myself, but now i make my own sheme of Bonecast Eternals :D

I absolutely hate the Stormcast range. I feel they're absolutely generic designs compared to most of the other Age of Sigmar ranges, even compared to the "old" stuff from Cities of Sigmar and other reused Oldhammer models. They're so... bland. They make me want to jam a brush handle into my eyeball.

well yeah , the OLD stormcast is really bad , big shoulder , chuncky. I avoid using liberator at all because of their design.

I do prefer the newer proportions, that certainly helps with the look, but i personally still really can't stand them, they all look so generic and interchangeable with one another, nothing really stands out its just a bunch of the same model but some have bows, some have hammers, some have spears. I also don't think the big chunky armour works in fantasy like it can in a sci fi setting. For me the absolute worst part of them is the helmets, can't stand them, and if you don't like a miniatures focal point, the face, then you really aren't going to like any of them. I think they really missed an opportunity to make them actually interesting by leaning on the fact that Sigmar is basically Thor, could have been really cool with the celestial armour, loads of furs and wild unkempt hair with circlets and more Nordic helmets, but that's just my taste obviously.

Have to disagree, old cast are so much cooler than the new ones, they had a better aesthetic and much more personality, the new ones are boring and look way too normal, old cast got me into AoS and now they look like shiny brettonia, and it’s horrible
