@@Dornpunzel It's just conditioning. Soldiers are going to be in high stress situations, possibly for weeks or months on end. If they can't handle a couple of weeks with a drill instructor, they're not going to handle something worse than a little name calling.

Chief wasn't considered a cool name until the 60s in the States, When there was a lot of fires that started popping up, fire department people were considered major heroes for saving the city. Eventually every kid wanted to be a fireman, it was closest thing to being a superhero. Firefighters were considered a popular profession and respectable one, so eventually chief was use to describe a leader, parents all called their kids chief at the time. But eventually fell out of fashion because the dangers that came with the job.

We had showers in our field hall where we did weight training, but there were only like 4 of no one ever used them after class.. We didn't have time usually. Now everyone is all sensitive about the human body and it's "traumatic" to be naked in front of others....

He was that way in real life. I met him a few times. He smiled and shook my hand. It was at the opening of a military museum. My mom is from Lynchburg, VA, and her mom grew up with Desmond. He had pretty bad hearing loss from WW2, but he was so nice and unassuming. He was a smart guy, but just really humble. My grandma went to the same school and church with him. We aren't related, but they knew each other pretty well. It is crazy what he did, and yet he was so easygoing about it. I'm 5'11", but I remember he was quite a bit taller than me. He was tall and thin.

@@Uhhhi-ih8bb I’m 49, my grandmother died at age 95 in 2015, so she was 21 when the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred. She was born in 1920, and my grandad on that side was born in 1913. Desmond Doss was born in February of 1919, so he was just one year older than my grandma, and six years younger than my grandad. They were all born and raised in Lynchburg, VA, along with my mom and her sister. I spent a lot of time in VA growing up. Desmond was obviously much older when I met him, because he was 55 when I was born.

That’s entirely plausible. If he did not see them as that, he probably saw them as something worse yet. I suspect that he *wanted* to see some hyper-focused, dead-serious detailed-oriented people who were focused upon doing one job, and one job only - becoming the best soldiers/marines they could possibly become, and leaving no resources unused toward doing that singular task. He’d still rip each one of them a new orifice so as to tell them he was utterly in charge.

Not too funny when you experience that shit in real life. I've had people come right up to me and do that patting-the-mouth "woo woo woo" thing. How am I expected to respond to that? I had a cousin who joined the Marine Corps and couldn't help giggling at the DI. When asked (pointedly) what he found so "freaking" funny he told them that he was the son of a master gunnery sergeant and they sounded just like his dad. The really funny bit is that they understood his problem!

It's just a show they put on. It's all part of the training. Once you're in a unit, good NCOs really take care of their people. I was so quiet in Basic that the DIs had to look up who I was during evaluations at the end. They actually pointed out that I didn't say much, and said they liked that I was concise.

I love the forshadowing this movie does right here in the beginning where sarge asks if he can carry his own weight, when he infact carried the weight of the entire platoon. Amazing movie

This is one of those comic relief scenes in an otherwise serious movie about WW2 that's just perfect, and absolutely welcome. Vince Vaughan was great for this role--the way he roasts them individually is just too funny!

When I first saw this movie, I was like "What the f***" when they got to the nude guy and the two playing chicken with the knife. I've seen some movies with guys doing crazy stuff in boot camp, but this took the cake.

They were playing Stretch not Chicken... the point is to throw the knife within 6 inches of the foot & then the other guy has to move his foot out to that point. You win when someone can't strech out any wider... so you throw AWAY from the foot & it was only being startled that made him fuck his throw.
