For atmos, I see a lot of recommended sub placement as under the desk. Do you need to treat that area in some way?
@haverstickdesigns
@haverstickdesigns Месяц назад
@@theBullringLive I typically try to avoid placement under the desk due to the fact that it puts the sub inside a resonate cavity. Lining the inside of the desk cavity with absorption can help to reduce this issue, but if it is possible to have it placed outside of the desk, that would be preferred. Thanks for the question!

Honestly, I spent 3 decades doing monitor measurements, including waterfall plots, crawling on the floor looking for sweet spots... all of it. I even tried 5 room correction algorithms. At the end of this journey I ended up just using two monitors and doing it all by ear (no more science), and now it works every damn time.
@StudioCeanothe
@StudioCeanothe Месяц назад
Doing it by ear is great, I think measurements just tell you what the remaining potential is. Once you've finished working by ear, take a few measurements and see if you maybe missed something. Room correction algorithms are unfortunately often too simplistic and make a ton of assumptions on your behalf (listening spot size, headroom control, subwoofer integration etc.) but are usually better than nothing, especially in untreated rooms. I would suggest using room correction software only after having fully exhausted speaker placement and acoustic treatment possibilities in the room.

Let me offer some food for thought here. Everyone's ears hear differently. Everyone has a dominant ear. So if you're making measurements by your ears and your ears aren't perfectly balanced you could have a serious problem. When everything matters nothing matters. This is why I like to check on headphones as well. Just for those things that you would normally need room correction for. You know, then you'd be able to hear these issues that Colt is experiencing. Sure. I place treatment as needed by ear. But I try not to stress about the little things. Low end problems can be solved by having multiple systems to check on. You don't necessarily need to have a perfect room. I don't. I make sure I listen to music that I like inside the room that I'm going to be mixing in. That way I know how music should sound in there. A good couple reference mixes can help out here.
@CreativeMindsAudio
@CreativeMindsAudio Месяц назад
Hell yeah! It’s all about using your ears and knowing your room in the end! No room can be ‘perfect.’ And imo flat is overrated. I’ve done some amazing mixing work in untreated or barely treated rooms. I’ve done great work in headphones. That being said, it’s important to have some treatment and control over the space. I’ve been in mostly flat rooms and it feels weird at times. Stuff feels too perfect. And when you are using the same room to record in you definitely don’t want a super flat room (live end dead end kinda thing). I think in colt’s position knowing his room was the better option (than investing a ton of money into it), but he went with this 😂.

Some great advice from Haverstick. While waiting for the next episode, the big mistake I made when treating my first room was underestimating the depth needed to treat it below 200 Hz. Here is some of the stuff I learned the hard way: - When starting off, don't be discouraged by huge peaks and nulls. Start with the bass as it requires largest space to treat. Focus on time response first, then when this is decent, start by treating nulls first. - First reflections are nasty. If these occur on a hard/thick surface that's less than 2-3 meters away from your speakers, you will get serious cancellation in the bass area that's very hard to get rid of. I've had to put 40 cm (about 16 inches) of absorbant material on ceilings to partially absorb reflections at 110-140Hz causing huge nulls. - You need to cover a lot of surface, often with thick absorbers. 4 inches will not scratch anything below 150-200 Hz. - Thicker absorbers need to use insulation material with lower airflow resistivity (often lighter weight materials, but not always!). Use acoustic modeling website to understand how your absorber will perform. - If you have very hard/thick surfaces, treat those in priority. - Don't put in diffusion until you're satisfied with bass response and you feel the room is too dry. - The difference between your deepest null and your average in your frequency response is a critical value. If that value is for example 10 dB, you will need to give up 10 dB of maximum volume to perform decent room correction. This is why it's important to get your room within +/- 5dB before room correction (or less if possible).
@jerryososkie839
@jerryososkie839 Месяц назад
I went through a similar process to tune my room. Moving the speakers closer to the front wall and experimenting with Owens Corning fiberglass large pipe insulation can work miracles in situations like this (especially around the 100 Hz dip). Eric Valentine has an amazing set of videos on his YT channel documenting his process tuning a custom built mixing/control room. After spending a ridiculous amount of money on RENZ ceiling panels for bass absorption down to 60 Hz, Eric discovered he could design and build his own VPRs for the walls. He finally fixed most of his remaining low end issues by experimenting with a substantial amount of fiberglass pipe insulation placed throughout the room. The low end flattening magic has something to do with the air gap in the center of the pipe insulation and, obviously, their placement relative to your listening position. Looking forward to seeing part 2 of your room flattening journey and hopefully finding a workable solution.

Hi Colt, Thank you for sharing this. The problems in your room became aparrent when you shared the waterfall diagrams, like you mention in the video. Reason being there are no pressure based absorbers dealing with bass frequencies. I am a total fan on measuring and then judging what needs to be done. It is however totally possible to chase your tail. I have got my 18 square meter room to measure flat within a 6 db plus minus range. Exception is a 100hz dip. Took me 4 years to figure out that the dip actually originates from the studio door vibrating. One day I was just leaning against while measuring, dip gone 😂. While on the subject: my close to linear room led me to make zero money out of it, you on the other hand.... Still comes down to experience, flat frequency or not. There is a reason why professional studios do not show the measurements.
@stringsdiezel
@stringsdiezel Месяц назад
I self-treated my mix room (which is on the smaller side), and it now measures +/- 3~4dB below 100Hz and +/- 1.5~2.5dB above 100Hz...before the room correction is applied (Trinnov). Little on the dry side for decay time, but that's actually my preference. I used a combination of rigid fiberglass, rockwool, and pink fluffy insulation to treat my mix room (all planned and build myself). The various absorption ranges from 4" to 18" depending on location: corner traps are about 17 x 17" floor to ceiling, soffit trap across front wall/ceiling corner is 24"Dx16"H or so, first reflections are 10" deep, etc. (Combinations of materials used for some locations). Finished it off with two PSI AVAAs to cut the decay time in the lowest octave, and a Trinnov for room/speaker correction. All together, it measures something like +/- 2.5 below 100Hz and +/- 1.5dB above 100Hz. Subwoofer integrates seamlessly and phase alignment is unreal (because Trinnovs are like magic; the speakers disappear and the front wall becomes the sound-stage). With a room as big as Colt's, should be easier to accomplish good results, just more building materials required to do it.

I have a great idea for you to try based on 2-3 decades of experience and looking at your setup. 1. Try putting your subwoofer on a stand that is the same height and distance from you as your main monitors (do not put it on the floor, in the corner, or against the wall; it has to be the same distance). 2. Make sure your subwoofer is in phase/polarity with your mains, and the crossover is set very low/deep (well below 100Hz, probably below 50-60Hz). 3. Try a subwoofer with a smaller driver (or many smaller drivers), and no ports (or smaller ports). 4. Don't avoid room treatment, but try to stop obsessing about it (especially room analysis).
@LeChapeauMusic
@LeChapeauMusic Месяц назад
so you said that you should set the crossover frequency very low... how low should it be? less than a hundred Hz?
@nicefish10
@nicefish10 Месяц назад
It would depend on what the low end response of your main speakers are. Shoot pink noise and measure to find out the natural roll off of just the main speakers in that space. With the sub positioned as stated above, then bring in your sub and set your crossover point to where it compliments the roll off from the main speakers the best with the least amount of build up at the crossover point. Remember that whatever your crossover point is, you will have two sets of drivers reproducing that same spot, and each set of monitors will have a different type or roll off slope so every situation will be different, depending on the driver, complement spacing from the wall, power, output of each component… Etc. Most people will find they don’t need very much sub added to round out a decent set of speakers. Also, remember that today most people driving around and their cars don’t have a subwoofer, most people listening to music are listening on their phone, which also does not have a subwoofer, or ear buds. The goal is not to set this up to feel like a Colosseum sound system, the goal is to get the most accurate response You can out of your room and your speaker devices so that your mixes translate well to the listening public.

Also at a certain level room will also gonna saturate just like any other gear. making every issue pop up. Hopefully you'll be able to fix it. I feel like the main issue is the shape of the ceiling and side walls . Its focus reflections directly over to your listening position. I just have an idea you could try with gavin. Try to simulate what happens when your two angular wall's surface became round ( it will diffuse the sound without scattering ) May be it won't work but i have a feeling that might make huge difference . Better to simulate it first if you got time. Also good luck with the room❤.

Colt, I recently watched a few good videos on speaker placement which was debunking the notion of moving your speakers away from the front wall, and why soffitting speakers is the best scenario. The issue with the low frequencies bouncing off the front wall hitting out of phase causing the exact kind of dip you are reading in your room. Putting your speakers against the front wall creates a bulge at the bottom end that you can roll off and by doing so, making your speakers work more efficiently, and that bounce back will be close to in phase, so the dip would theoretically be eliminated. What if you just used your speakers to the wall and measure again?

It always seems like voodoo when it comes to treating a room. I built my space also with 2 inch rockwool all around in an old garage. Raised the floor for floor heating and capitalised on that to somewhat detach the room from the rest of the house. But all that was done with the intention of soundproofing, not room treatment. A massive leather heavy couch at the other end of the room did magic for low end. The very obvious to why many mix studio have this. Cheap light-sponged IKEA don't cut it. I tried. :) Get those heavy leathered chesterfields. Throw in chunky La-z-boy. It would actually be cheaper and serves double-duty for less or equivalent price to customising a bass trap. After soundproofing and couch, I re-measured the room dimension and then go hunt for monitors that will not overpower the size of the room. Focal 65 for mixes down to 50Hz it is. And a 1029A Genelec for long dialogue edits. How loud I listen while mixing is still key to how the room mode would react. Lower volume = less energy in the room = less problem. And when I do want to get critical - I grab my trusty cans. It is an expensive endeavour getting into room acoustics. But I do look forward to see how you treat your room with Haverstick. Hoping to be de-mystified.

Those Trio11s are also just too far out into the room. Front of speaker should not be more than 2ft away from wall, or you will have difficult SBIR (Speaker Boundary Interference Response) reflections to deal with. Push them towards the front wall and some of that low end will balance itself out :)
@Studio22mix
@Studio22mix Месяц назад
I dived into room acoustics two months ago, what a rats nest of info and bad info is there to find on RU-vid. After getting more understanding how bass-traps work, how diffusion works and most of all phase cancelation and decay times I got some very great results. I absolutely would recommend any engineer to dive into acoustical treatment because it will gain you more improvement than buying a more expensive speaker. A sub is an absolute necessity imo if you want to hear the low-end correctly, you simply cannot mix something you cannot hear and feeling the low-end gives a far more exciting mixing experience imo. If we want a mix to sound great than we need a room that sounds great and any improvement we can get will asure better translations, less ear fatigue at longer sessions and definitely more sonic pleasure. My mixes are done so much faster now and they always translate well because I freaking can actually hear what's going on, what a game changer I should have done it way earlier. 🤟🏼

@@KenjiStandlee This is true.. I was an AV engineer/automator/programmer... back in the day. I did enjoy DVD-A on a few designed 6.1 setups running fullrange B&W towers and some MAC/Lexicon amps. To bad DVD-A, SACD and so many other multi-channel formats died off. I personally would not put any stock into Dolby Atos for music audio. IMHO. If you do some reseach you will find most movies don't spend resources to mix outside a true 5.1 and just add gimmicy effects very rarely in the mix for the rest of the 7.4.2+ spkrs. Dolby Atmos will eventually die off too. Remember Quadrafonic Sound?... Anyway, Good luck to you and Colt and I still enjoy the videos. Sometimes, I wish I didn't retire so young. I'm only in my 40s. @iam-music
@iam-music Месяц назад
Hmm Its unlikely you will ever solve sub probs like that as you are literally chasing a moving target but the solution is simple (and my room is VERY similar to yours) 1. Find the centre point of the room ie the pressure zone centre (ok it will approx for a couple of reasons 2. Im not sure how the ceiling terminates but if its an apex, you will need to baffle plate. The idea is to have a boundary plane that will be used for the sub 3. Mount the sub on the ceiliing, ideally as infinite baffle or at least down fire (well upfiring) so that you use the whole ceiling boundary...kind of like the way a boundary mic works 4. Tune time delay and xover etc...voila you now have a normalised compression plate. Of course there will still need to be freq shoe horning but the physics is now using all the advantage of the room. I then used deep (900-1200mm) sub attenuators. This way the pressure zones are as equal as poss and easy to handle with 1 dimension. It (demonstrably) worked for me and it sounds amazing The bottom line is that I only use that for clients...I do most of the sub mixing with a high end tactile transducer bolted to my mix chair...why waste all the resource when you can stil low levvel mix and save your ears ie when you can actually feel it and get to know wave/crest in the subs, its miles ahead

Dang. My little room 9 x16.5 with hs8s on stands and a decent amount of treatment is flatter than that overall. However I do have a big sharp null at 103hz that can’t be corrected. I also have a smoother but higher low end gain that peaks at 60 hz. Which is smooth up until that peak. Every time I Tryed to correct it I just can’t mix with it flattened. I’ll boast low end without it. lol. I think the harmond curve is probably the idealish curve for me. Completely flat always sounds mid heavy, un enjoyable and trashy to me. A low end room gain that doesn’t create issues above 100 hz that sounds even to the ear with a slow sin wave generator is my ideal. Imo. But I do agree if you can fix the room then do so. But you may want to bring back that low end boast afterwards. Which I’m sure will be better since it will be speaker provided and not room provided.

I totally get doing whatever you can to get your room to a point where it is free of major flaws, but quite honestly, I think it is overhyped. If you know your room, use references, monitor with different methods and don’t mix at crazy volumes, the results can be just as good as a “perfectly” tuned room. Colt has said it himself…some of his highest charting music was recorded in a tiny spare bedroom. In order of importance: songs, performance, engineer, equipment and last…room.

That’s mostly correct. The old versions of the Trio 6, they felt like there was some compression/limiting happening at loud volumes that these trio 11s don’t have. A bad mix sounds really bad on Airpods, that's exactly why we need good mixes. The worse the system the better your mix needs to be to hold up. Normal people wont listen to shitty mixed stuff. And also I think you're underestimating how many people listen to music for the passion and appreciate good sounding music. A mix needs to translate on big PA's, clubs, cars, radio, etc. This is exactly why we need the mix to translate and the lowend to be good.
