ive done both and noticed that when you have a niche, people dont follow you for you. you think they're loyal followers, but they're not. they'll click unfollow the second you post something that isn't your exact niche. when you post whatever you want is when people will grow attached to you and watch all your stuff whatever you post
She is awesome! She really gets it. What she is saying you never know what content/ topics will be the next hit on your channel!! So why lock yourself down to a specific niche that may not make it!. It's best to get your feet wet and go for it! Be messy in the beginning for the practice. Remember practice makes perfect and be open minded 🥰
If you’re doing RU-vid, you most definitely don’t have to niche. Even a lot of RU-vidrs that do, they’ll do the same thing for 1-2 years and do the next thing for 1-2 years. RU-vid videos get a lot of engagement based on what EVERYONE wants to see not just your subs. Now with a Instagram business page and websites, it should be niched down. If you want to do multiple things think about constructing multiple pages. For instance: you want to sell all kind of candles. Have a page that sells ALL of your ideas. Then one that is Faith based and one that is funky/unique. Each IG page can target THAT particular customer.
What of twitter like I want to write about fashion business and lifestyle but what’s stopping me is that Everyone is making it seem I need to have only one niche that’s stopping me from starting
My coaches have told me for years to niche down *'the riches are in the niches'* .. if anything it's held me back *so* much! I came to realise that I was my target audience, so now I just create content that I'd like to consume :) *Great video as per Erin!* Thank you for sharing *xx*
I am finally realizing that creating content that I'd like to watch as an audience is the way to go. It helps gather like minded people as subscribers and grow a community that's supportive and engaging. It also helps to keep it so healthy for the mindset and keeps you motivated as well.
I have 10K on my main channel account. I don’t enjoy watching diy videos and I’m losing interest in MAKING DIY videos. When I post a video NON diy it gets so so low views compared to a diy. 😭🥺
Thank you for this. I’ve stalled making content and giving it my all because of the whole “pick a niche” thing. It almost makes me not want to create because creating should feel free and I just felt boxed in
I agree! My niche was natural hair because I was always told the best way to be successful on YT is to have a niche. But after a couple of years that niche actually wasn’t beneficial for me creating consistent content because there’s no way I can wash my hair 3 times a week. So over the last few months I’ve been trying to dig myself out of that niche hole and incorporate my other interests such as makeup, fragrance and skincare. It can be discouraging because those videos don’t get as many views as my natural hair content because that’s what my channel was built on. But it’s a way for me to build a new audience that are interested in my other interests and allows me to create more content. So I’ll keep pushing to grow those views for makeup, fragrance and skincare. Because one thing I’ve learned about content creating, if you’re not doing the things you love you won’t continue to create. I always want YT to be fun and something I enjoy and not feel like just another job 😉
I’ve literally felt like this for years! Holding out on even trying in the first place because I could never decide on just one thing or category. I’m just now setting the intention to figure out how to go about expressing my creativity without limits. I was just on the phone talking to a friend about this exact thing, opened up RU-vid and this is the first video that popped up. Needed to hear this 🙏🏽
This! It’s been so discouraging to me to pick a ‘niche’ that I just post videos/shorts about nothing hoping I’ll figure it out. My brain doesn’t do just ONE thing. Good Luck! I’ll def come check your channel out :)
Girl you said my name Alicia and I said wait Erin is talking to me. I am in the process of changing my target audience of my channel. I think I 'm just gonna go for it. I already have 13k subs but I think I left for a while and lost the attention of many so this would be a good time to change things up.
Thank you I love this ! I'm a doctor and I felt like my content has to be only health but I love other things other than health, I also realized I want my socials to be an escape. I'm so much more than a doctor.
I needed to see this. As a non niche creator I found my growth has been very stagnant. 🥴 I thought about just focusing on one niche but it’s just not that enjoyable.
This is where I am stuck at. Because I am on a weight loss journey but I LOVE to clean and organize. But I’m also a working mom. I want to share every part of my life. That’s my problem. Lol!
Omg, thank you so much for this!! My ADHD takes me all over the place, (I’ve tried to fight it for years) but this perspective makes me so much more comfortable to simply create the content that I genuinely enjoy!
Same! I tend to obsess about a topic for a while and kind of burn myself out on it and then want nothing to do with it for awhile. I've hesitated to start a channel bc of this fact. This video has given me so much hope!
Just started and I would say go ahead and post ur first video once u have done that just keep going n don’t listen to negativity… gonna subscribe to you so u can be encouraged 😁
I wish I brainstormed a little more before I started my channel. I just dove right on in and started uploading content and now trying to figure out how to grow. You will do great girl! Good luck.
This was so necessary to hear! Ive had my youtube channell for 8 years and have always felt stuck with trying to find a niche to grow my channel. But in reality didnt want to get stuck in a specific type of video category either. I have always been very multi dimensional and have been trying to come up with a better plan to share and educate on those things.THANK YOU!
This is amazing. It makes so much sense. Creating content around the idea of my TAP. I love the fact that I know what my TAP’s life and mind is like so I I can go back to that reference when I’m brainstorming. Thank you so much 🙏🏽
I was amongst those who requested this video! Target Audience Persona (TAP) makes so much more sense to me, than “niching” down super specifically. I thought of this before and glad that you touched on it. I will save this video to refer to later on. Great video👏🏿
You're amazing! I was definitely JUST talking about not niching down! So glad someone made a video about it -- I do target persona profiles with my branding clients and they always find it so helpful!! Great content + thanks for sharing!
I started my RU-vid channel in November...I'm struggling far as subscribers and views but I'm not giving up..Your video has truly inspired me..I won't give up😊❤💪🏾
This video came at the perfect time!! My channel turned into a beauty channel with makeup reviews! Hauls! And even though I love to do them I feel at times I don’t have much time to film them and highly considered vlogging my life! I’m a mom who works s full time job life can be busy. I don’t want to switch it up on my subscribers but I am so much more than just a beauty content creator . Is it too late to switch it up after a year 1/2 ?
Definitely switch it up! There’s so many mamas like myself who love to watch other moms and their “day in the life” lol that’s a relatable topic for sure! Best of luck to you!!
Thanks for this!! This is exactly what I plan to talk about on my channel this year! Sharing that it’s okay to not just talk about one thing/topic! I’m so tired of being told to be boxed in. It can be sooo intimidating and crippling! 😭
@@AmyChaos It’s easy for me. But I’m struggling converting my subscribers because alit of them just want hair tutorials. I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing and they will fall off and other will find me. I know it’s a process
@@damasterstylist As mainly someone who watches on RU-vid, I really like when creators start doing other things. It’s cool to know like hey this person is a human & versatile doesn’t just do XYZ all the time. Especially w/hair stylists, makeup artists, anything creative. You guys usually have some awesome stuff. I’ll have to check out your page :)
Omg thank you for this. Trying to find a “niche “ has held me back quite a bit cause I have so many different videos that I want to create but I felt locked in to trying to find just one thing and because I couldn’t choose I’ve just been dragging my feet. I just want to make content that I want to see and build my channel with like minded people.
I’m a stay at home mom, I have a small baking business, I love fashion, traveling with my family, going to restaurants with my husband, idk if I should include all of that when I make my channel. I also don’t know if I should turn my personal I.G into my blog page or create a new one because honestly my family and friends and associates follow me at the moment and they may like what I’m doing but may not “like” it because I’m stepping out and doing something other than just posting pics.
Do you have a page for your baking business? If not, create one. As far as changing your person IG to a blogging page or creating a new one, it depends. But based on what you wrote, it sounds like you want to share lifestyle content-your interests, traveling, food, so it sounds like you’d have a personal brand. So I’d say use your current page. I had the same question and still do I guess I’m answering for the both of us in this response (I’m great with answering questions, I need to work on ‘taking my own advice’ -that’s my podcast name btw lol). Years ago, I created a separate page for like “RU-vid content influencing” and didn’t really see the need to use it and later I transformed it to my podcast page (it needs a refresh lol). Anyway, the content you’re creating is your life, so archive the current photos you don’t want on your page (if any) and start to transform your page into the content you want -one post at a time. If they love you, they’ll support you. For those who don’t, you didn’t need them around anyway. Take it from me, don’t allow those thoughts to stand in your way because time will go on whether you take action or not, so why not be proud of the steps you’ve taken 6 months from now instead of thinking “what if” or “I should’ve”?! I pray this helps 🙏🏿💕
Thank you so much Erin. Since I stumbled on your channel my idea about content generation changed. My biggest struggle with my channel is deciding on what type of content to creat because we have been told that on RU-vid niching is paramount. But hearing you now makes me really excited to go vast with my content ideas.
I don't think niching and building a target audience are mutually exclusive, both are necessary and can coexist. Also, I think there is a distinct difference between whether you are talking about building a RU-vid channel versus starting a business. With a RU-vid channel yeah have at it and explore your TAP's many different interests and passions but starting a business really needs to have more focus and skill. When I started my YT channel I followed Roberto Blake's make 100 crappy videos challenge and posted different videos from business educational sit down videos to day in the life vlogs to travel vlogs to tap into what I wanted to create, plus my audience responded to. But when I started my business it was based on my unique skills, talent, and education, who would most benefit from those skills, and how I could best serve those people.
@@j.flaner8506 I am aware RU-vid is a business as well but the approach is still different from a business providing products or services, especially when it comes to niching the way it was explained.
Yes! Target audience persona is an awesome concept! You've done such an excellent job explaining it too! Thank you so much! I really needed this info so I can build my business and social media!
She is awesome! She really gets it. What she is saying you never know what content/ topics will be the next hit on your channel!! So why lock yourself down to a specific niche that may not make it!. It's best to get your feet wet and go for it! Be messy in the beginning for the practice. Remember practice makes perfect 🥰
Your video on starting a channel in 2022 is literally the reason I’ve decided to not be focused on one or two niche areas as a new RU-vidr. I struggled with the idea of that even after announcing it, so when I saw your video I felt so much relief. Why limit ourselves right?! Thank you for sharing!
This was very helpful! As I feel the same exact way, I have so many different interests and niching down seems like I’d be forgetting about all my other hobbies. Thank you for taking the time to break this down, it definitely helped put things in perspective for me 🤍
I love your channel! Everything is so clear and straight to the point! Amazing job at breaking things down! This helped me so much because having a niche made me feel too restricted, so I haven’t started! I’m super nervous, but I can’t wait to start my channel!
If YOU are your niche, then no need to niche down. But if people want the INFO that you provide, then you need to niche down. For MOST people, the niche is what draws people initially.
Love that you always think outside the box and go against the narrative when necessary especially when it has worked for you. Sometimes hearing the same things about growing on RU-vid (and it’s not working) it’s can be a lil confusing and frustrating. I love variety so this is helpful. Thanks Erin! ❤️🙏🏾
"The whole goal of creation is to impact." LOVE IT. I'm applying this thought to whatever I create from now on. Thanks for producing such quality content!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! This was definitely the clarity that I needed and will help me so much going forward! I was under the impression that I needed to niche and then find a specific target audience together and it just felt too restrictive. By only focusing on the target audience I feel less of a burden on selecting topics and also less stressed on being too restricted. I appreciate you taking the time to make this video as it hopefully impacts my channel for the better going forward. Take care!
Niching down would crush my creative soul. When you create anything it has your signature and aesthetic because that's how you approach things. We all have certain preference's that consciously and unconsciously go into everything that we create.
I have been trying to get out of the Natural Hair niche for quite some time and I’ve been so discouraged by the constant advice to niche down, and overall my channel has suffered since I started experimenting with other content. I’m definitely gonna try these tips and see how it works out for me. Thank you! P.S I’ve been a viewer since before you hit 10k and you always come through with the helpful content! So happy to see your growth, you deserve it all!❤️
Hey! Natural hair is such a hard niche. I started off that way but didn’t even do 15 videos on it. But definitely keep trying! I found your channel 5 years ago from your natural hair videos❤️❤️🥰 if you don’t enjoy it, you won’t feel like creating it.
Halfway through the video and I’m shook because this video was right on time. Starting out i DID NOT want to niche but i felt like that was the only way for me to grow. I had so many ideas on just adulting as a whole. Thank you sooooo much for this. Thank you God for confirmation 🥲
Thank you so much for talking about this subject! I can't tell you how much I was stressing over niching down for future content. Seriously...this video helped a lot! xo
I am now stuck in a niche and trying to get out of it and create more content on other topics that are also part of me. but now I have almost 20K subs focused on roller skating as I discoveed this during the pandemic and it helped me with my mental health. But I want to do more content on my product management, starting life in my 30s and the travels I do. I have no clue how I can combine these.
Way to break this ish down!!! Seriously!!! Thank you!!! U literally answered my questions!! From a mom of 2 autistic boys, fashionista, wife, horror movie buff, spiritual badass! I’m all over the place 😂😂😂 thank you for braking this down🥰🥰🥰🥰
Wow! This is me and wife! Our daughter is autistic, I’m a professional airbrush artist, we met in the movie industry, she definitely a badass! 😁 and I’m all over the damn place!! lol I paint all sorts of sh… I mean, stuff.. and I’ve struggling to decide on one niche 🤦🏽♂️. So, I’m narrowing it down to maybe a few…lol Good luck!! 👊🏽💥😎
I started my RU-vid a few weeks ago & I must say it can get very discouraging not seeing any growth. I have lots of interest & I want to target so many people but what makes it hard is there are so many RU-vidrs doing the same thing. What makes me different enough for them to watch my videos?! 😩🤦🏾♀️
I think keep doing you, let your personality keep shining, the right audience, your viewers will find you! And when they do, engagement is going to be high and girl you’re going to thrive! You got this 👏
I finally get the whole target audience thing now! Well, I mean I have an idea how to proceed. I’ve been wondering how in the WORLD to figure that out! This is the best laid out explanation I’ve heard, the most understandable. Thanks!
Let me ask you a question that I've been confused about as to whether or not it matters: My target audience is 35 to 45 year old females that like to create/craft custom art on stainless steel tumblers; mostly for a side hustle and possibly a full business, especially for the stay at home moms that fit that description. My question is, I ,obviously, don't come anywhere close to fitting the description of my target audience and therefore they may not resonate with me. Most content creators I see are the majority same as their target - Do you think this matters or has any negative effects?
This was so helpful to me! I go back and forth between home decor, shop with me and motherhood content... it is so hard to stick to one. Thanks for creating this. Love your content.
thank you for all of your tips Erin! I really want to start a channel and it's exciting but scary for me😭 one thing I really get stressed over is a lack of ideas... knowing I don't NEED a niche helps a lot but I still struggle coming up with good ideas... but this video helped put a few things in perspective :)
I don’t know if you’ll ever see this but I have literally been sitting here BINGING your videos for the past few hours and now subscribed, lol. I feel like I have learned so much especially as someone who wants to brand myself and essentially make myself a business. I want to learn more and you have been so helpful! This is something I’ve wanted to do since I was child before it was even popular! You’re an inspiration to another Young blank woman who is also an aspiring entrepreneur. I want to start my channel now after watching you so THANK YOU! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hey Erin, this video was so super helpful. Your explanation was way more 'human' than any marketing readings and it made it easy to understand. Thanks so much!
Speaking of “feeling seen”, you are literally the ONLY person that has made me feel like that. I want to start a channel and/or a blog but my roadblocks have been everyone telling me to “niche down”, so thank you, thank you, thank you! You just offered me so much reassurance. Priceless input from someone who clearly just gets it! I will definitely be signing up for your course and be very much looking forward to it. I wish there was a way that I could buy you a coffee or something as a tip - you deserve it!
That's why I've been so hesitant to niche because of "running out" of ideas. There are highly successful channels that don't niche as much! Thanks for this video
This video was really helpful Erin! I can’t wait to make my TAP. It does seem kind of fun. I’m taking a break from creating until I get some firm direction of what it is I want to do. Thank you ❤️
Hello, I'm a new content creator and I don't want to NICHE LOL. I get so excited to create content. I spend so much time trying to get it right. I don't understand why i'm not getting view much. I was recently monetized than my views dropped! I've paid for 2 classes that gave me info i already knew. It's definitely not easy started out.
I honestly am trying to find ways to generate enough income in order to be able to afford to study to do the job I really want to do - which is opera singing, but when you are homeless, unemployed, poor, can't drive, don't have a diploma, degree, certifications, or even a subpar GED, etc - it is quite difficult to figure out what to do.
I can think of at least two different content creators that I follow who make a range of videos. One is Frugal Fit Mom who does budget meal challenge videos, regular cooking videos, and health and fitness stuff. Then there's an even more eccentric creator, Atomic Shrimp, who has done some really creative budget meal challenges, foraging videos, videos about exotic and strange canned foods, and videos about little inventions and experiments he likes to do as a hobby. I'm subscribed with notifications to both even though I only watch the budget challenge stuff for both. You could say that both have several different niches on one channel. But when they make a video, it clearly fits into one of their niches (and is clearly labeled for its niche, so I can tell immediately if it's one I want to watch or not), and they make a playlist that has all of their similar videos in it so you can run through their catalog of just the content you like. I think it can work just fine with you having several different niches that you create content for, just keep it well-labeled and organized so people can go in and grab what they want, like a convenience store.
My struggle is I have a channel that’s in Chinese that used to talk about how to make more money and career growth, right now I just quit my job and decided to travel and living a camper van so I want to make videos only on travel and camper van. To reach more audience, I want to change my channel to English, in this case do you recommend I just actually start a new channel instead?
Thank you for your insight in this video! So helpful. I’ve been struggling with finding a specific niche but now creating a target audience persona is helping me not only further define my niche but also think more about the needs of the audience that I need to consider.
My entire (Internet) life, I have been deleting my RU-vid channels and other forms of social media and restart from scratch because I hyperfixate ALL. THE. TIME. between my hobbies and passions. I just drop one thing because it either bores me or no creative juices are flowing anymore... I have autism and ADHD and so I can NEVER STICK TO ONE THING for like a month, I keep going back and forth, back and forth ... 😬💀
Is it ok if my TAP is basically like me? Lol, the type of content I want to create is about sharing my experiences and things I find interesting about life as a woman to hopefully help other women who are going through the same or are curious about said issue. Can that be considered a niche (videos about life as a woman) since it will include many topics like relationship, motherhood, sex, hygiene, misogyny, work-life balance, etc.?
I have 3 different channels and i'm unsure whether i should just change it to 1. What are your thoughts if they are completely different things. yoga, family vlog and business. Would love to hear your thoughts x
Hi Erin! I just want to say thank you so much for all of the great advice you provide. You are such an inspiration. Since I joined the e-brand club my business is doing SO WELL. Also, this is a great video!
Oh thank god! So many youtube advice videos insist upon niching, but I think my content would generally be me approaching random concepts that just spring up onto me with my own humor. Right now I'm working on a youtube series about minecraft mobs as anime girls, but I've also already done a vtuber process tutorial, and I have plans for the future as well. I was so worried I'd be forced to niche down just to get more views but I'm so happy that's not the case.
Hi Erin just wanted to let you know that at 3 different times I tried to order your Calendar Book and would have paid $60 dollars for it but each time I left a note to be placed on the waiting list for the next order and still never received the opportunity to buy one. Since then I went into Digital Planning and will never look back. Just wanted to let you know that because of the situation not being to buy your book it has opened up a whole new world for me in digital planning and not wasting paper. I thank you for the experience and many prayers for your business to continue to grow.
Thank you for your support, Miniece! I’m so glad you’ve found what works for you. The waitlist was on my website for months and everyone who was on the waitlist were first to be notified via email. Not sure where the disconnect happened but they’ve been in stock for the past 5 months. Regardless, I’m so glad you’ve found an effective method and I wish you continued success. Xo Erin.
Recently I created a second channel but haven't started posting on it yet. So a little about my current (main channel), i started posting things about everything Im interested in from skateboarding to swimming, workouts to general sports talk, but I feel like I just have so many different niches and topics that i make on this one channel it gets a bit messy and bad for the youtube algorithsm. I've seen some video do pretty well whilst the others not so much. So i wanted to make the second channel for ONLY my exercise and fitness stuff whilst my current one is just for life/vlog/skateboarding. But the issue is i dont have so much time to focus on both and I also feel too involved and dedicated to my current channel to be able to make that switch all of a sudden. Like it feels like I have to restart everything, not that I have a lot of subs on this channel anyawys but I worked quite hard on it and it has been growing slowly but consistently lately. So i'm quite troubled on what to do and how I should go about, maybe slowly cut down on the topics/niches that are not getting so many views? So just focus on like 2 instead of 5
hi please someone read my comment,i like to watch only vlogs,it refers to lifestyle but I find it boring watching hauls, will vlogs and grwms be okay for my channel,I don't have any idea of content to post apart from vlogs and grwms
First of all, why did you describe me to a T in your Tap example 😂, except I’m 27 and looking to leave in 3 years. Spot on, Thank you Erin for these tips. I have been binging your content and learning so much !!!
I am doubting about the niche of my RU-vid channel.. My niche is advice videos about beauty and self care, but recently I started to make other videos like gaming vids and unboxings and I realized these got more views than my advice videos. I keep thinking if i should continue the advice videos cause that's why I created my RU-vid channel and I don't wanna change anything up because that's how everything started. I'm scared that if I make advice videos that I will lose subscribers. I find it always fun if I have other types of niches on one channel but idk if it's good...
I much needed this video😇 someday i feel like doing study vl0gs while other day wajna do travel vlog... read somewhere that it will freeze my channel and all 😢 i was so confused 😆 got some clarity ❤❤
I’m commenting from an extra account. BUT my main channel has 10K subs and I do diy. I am losing interest in that niche 🥺😪 haha! My subs came from that and so did thousand of thousands of views lol! Idk I’m scared and I don’t know what to do. 🤦🏽♀️💭🤷🏽♀️
Wow great video! I've got a fitness Channel, a paranormal channel and plan on starting a dog channel. Haha now there's a mix of niches. Might just squash then all together and see if the audience like the change from one video to the next hmmm?
Erin, I LOVE your videos! . . . My niche audience would be young single mothers who are in a lot of Facebook group but I cannot Market to them inside of those groups. How do you suggest I could reach out to them, just one at a time befriending them?
Hi I’m in the process of wanting to change my niche or focus on more vlogging and reviews on items I’ve already purchased. Moving in that direction for one because clothing hauls are to expensive and I’m wanting to attract well more subscribers but folks 40 and over. I need help.
