I have no ambition in life - but I feel fine

In this video I wanted to share a bit about my personal experience letting go of the weight of expectation I put on myself for so many years, and realizing that with each passing day my aspirations and goals felt less necessary in order to feel like I’ve ‘done something’ with my life. I still have things I’d like to do, but I suppose the big change is that I’m not putting pressure on myself to do things quickly or a certain way, but let life reveal itself over time. I know this doesn’t apply to everyone, but for me it’s been meaningful, so I wanted to share with the hope we can pause now and then in the midst of our busy lives to smell the roses ☺️ title: I have no ambition in life - but I feel fine
**I’m just trying to define what ambition is for me now, not what others have defined it in my life. I understand achieving anything in life could be considered having an ambition of some sort, I just wanted to talk about my process working through pressures to always be doing more and succeeding more… instead, enjoying what is enough for me and choosing not to compare, only to do my best within the confines of my own life. As someone who has struggled with workaholism and being quite anxious earlier in life, this has been a meaningful journey to me to ask myself not what I think I should want out of life, but what I truly want. And yes, I suppose this is ambitious! But I need to use words to describe what I’m trying to say, and those words can be interpreted in many ways, so I hope that this video shows that of course I have wanted to work hard to survive (and of course thrive), but that I have let go of what I previously considered ‘ambitious’ to embrace a new way of living… a very ambitious one at that: cultivating a loving interior life and finding gratitude and joy in the every day.

I graduated high school in 1976, a time when women were told we can do it all. If we weren't doing it all, we were somehow letting down all of womanhood. So, I did, I have 3 advanced degrees, and 4 children. I worked full time and took care of family...or at least I thought I was. I had a nanny taking care of my kids and wearing myself out being active every waking minute of every day. When my kids were grown, I left my big life, retired early, and now live in a 4-room farmhouse where I spend my time in my art studio or just doing nothing. I spend time with my grandchildren and family...life is slow and simple. I am so glad you are seeing there is a plus to slow and simple in your younger years. Enjoy.

It's quite sad that the system teaches us to "be busy" and it's looked up on. At a phase in my life where I experienced solitude and nature, a lot of guilt and other feelings of unworthiness came up due to a lack of "productivity". When you look at animals though, they don't question their existence. They simply just lay on the ground and watch the day the go by. Overtime, I let those negative feelings go and accepted just being.

I'm 22. I have no ambition in life. Many times I feel like something's wrong with me for not having any drive, specially when I compare myself to people my age. I really love this quote: "we're not here to change the world, we're here to learn to love it as it is". Thank you for being an inspiration. I’m 22 as well and feel like i wrote this myself. I feel guilty or embarrassed when people asked “what do you do”. Because I didn’t go to college and I have no real desire to. I’ve never had a career goal or had an epiphany of “that’s what I want to be!” All I knew since a young age up until now is that I wanted a cottage or small home off in the woods with chickens and small animals. A garden to care for and live a simple life. It’s sad that a lot of people deem that ambitious-less or boring. I know I want to read my books and live off my own land. I guess it’s just the “how” I’m going to get there for me.

I have never been ambitious but through my 20s, 30s, & most of my 40s I felt guilty about this. Then I found myself alone, very little money & learnt how to survive & enjoy simple pleasures & make do with very little & embraced a simpler life & gave myself permission to feel ok about not being ambitious. We only have one life & if we can live it well & not hurt others then it’s a life well lived.

You said a powerfully familiar thing, that everything you thought would make you happy didn’t. That was true for me as well. My husband of 42 years and I raised 6; 4boys, 2girls, and they have all become model adults true to their individual passions interests, and pursuits. .. and have their own beautiful families and all live 15 minutes away in their tree lined community, sub-divisions. It was truly a labor of love to be a stay home mom for 25 years, because I had originally romanticized the thought of motherhood because I thought that being a mom would make me happy and truly it didn’t, because I don’t like conflict and raising human beings-let alone 6- is all about resolving conflicts, conflicts of ideas, and temperament. I’m a homebody and love quietude and they were vibrant social bodies😅, but thankfully Thankfully I survived the long night, and now, it is day, and I smile and wonder how I survived it all. The story is told and now the pen is in their hands to write the next chapters of a family.. and if I had known it would be so hard, I would have fortified myself with practical and tactical 😅training for workplace conflict resolution 😅 which is what a home becomes for the mother. The work of raising adults is no crystal stair, or flowered garden, it is the trenches of life in heart break and heart building.

I’m 45 with 12 yr old twins and a 13 yr old daughter. It is an emotionally difficult age to get through anyway and I wish my husband understood the mental amount of work in making sure they have a good foundation. He bought a business 6 yrs ago (married 23 years) it’s changed him, we have very different values now. Not sure what the future looks like and where I belong. I’m doing a bit of therapy on the side to contribute financially. I am passionate about mental health but my focus is the kids. Not forever, just for now. Many traumas can happen between 12-17 and I want to be a safe person for them. Not sure why I just wrote so much. My marriage hasn’t been easy. But separating now doesn’t seem like a good thing for any of them so I shall keep on going. Thanks for ur channel, u r a gift!!

And i found someone who thought the way i did. That most things human stress about are truely unimportant in the grand scheme of things. Most of how we live our lives is based on societial norms. And i wanted out. I wanted to throw everything In my life away that didn't serve my souls experience. That is very true it is really hard to unlearn what has been drilled into us and affected us from a very young age as though we are not enough until we prove our worth based on society's current standards. I think in some ways social media has been good in this sense that we can connect far more easily with people who have found their truth and who know how to separate their lives and goals from what others expect of them which is so encouraging and helps us take that step. I am a stay at home mom in my early 30s and I often feel I am still fighting against this or having to justify my decision to some people who are intrusive and I really have to unlearn this. I hope you continue to grow and learn and enjoy your retirement on your own terms.

I'm so much happier knowing myself, knowing that what I truly desire is the space to dream but no obligation to make it reality, to enjoy friends and family, to create art and express my feelings. Paola, I relate so much to this video.

I'm in my early 20s and I have realized that I don't know what I want to do anymore. When I was a teenager I had so many ideas, but now I just want to live peacefully in the countryside with a garden. I don't have as much passion as I used to for college. Sometimes this makes me feel like a failure. Though, watching you is helping me through these thoughts.

I completely understand you. I'm in my mid 20s and the more I interact with the job market and the world in general, the more I feel the need for a simple, slow and poetic life. With time, I've realized I'm not made for the kind of lifestyle that society pressures us to follow. I don't want to always be in a rush, I despise the idea of being confined to a desk for most of my day, I dread the idea of feeling helpless and stuck in a dehumanizing routine. This can't be life, can it? We are here for such a brief time, I can't imagine spending it like that. Of course working is necessary and can also be rewarding, but I simply cannot imagine myself in a 9-5 soulless job for the rest of my life, surrounded by equally soulless people. There's so much inside of me that needs nurturing, so many dreams and things going on... I just want peace and time, and kindred spirits to share life with.

I don't know it you knew about this, but roughly half of college grads do not work in the field of study where they got their degree. I happen to be one of those. There are expectations others put on us and there are expectations we put on ourselves. Finding where we thrive, I think, is where we find the most happiness. I found that place, and it seems like you've found that place also, and you feel the calmness and rest that comes with that realization. In my opinion, that is commendable. No matter what society wants to tell you, the eternal chase after money or fame is not the way to get happy or find peace in life. The sad thing is, society exepcts everyone to always work harder, do even more things on top of the things you already do. But the thing, is not everyone is made the same. I don’t think it’s that you don’t have ambition in life per say. Ambition doesn’t have to equal career goals. I think, wanting to live life in a way that feels fulfilling to you, and having a dedication to that goal is a type of ambition in itself. I say this all because I myself have been having many of the same kinds of thoughts as you, and it’s refreshing, so refreshing, to hear somebody else give voice to those feelings. It made me feel less alone and less guilty for not wanting to give in to the social pressure to live by other people’s standards.

I cannot even BEGIN to say how I relate to this! We are pretty much taught from the moment we can think and understand that we should decide how we’ll fit into the capitalist machine of do, do, do, make more money, work more, sell your soul to your career, like it’s the most important thing ever. For a very long time, I stressed over how I could please those people, but nowadays, I am perfectly content working a day job and then going home to my partner and my hobbies and just doing what I want, without worrying about what people think and how I ambitious I really am. Sometimes I am jealous that others have that drive to do “great things”, but I have to remind myself that that’s their journey, not mine. Right now, my journey involves exploring new things (like traditional magic and mindfulness) and giving more grace to myself. Thanks so much for all your beautiful and validating work!

All of your videos are very comforting, healing, and resonate with me deeply. Thank you for sharing your journey and your vulnerability. Not all of us are built to deal with, in a healthy way, the demands and expectations of modern society (such as chasing big ambitions). For those who can, more power to them. But there’s also nothing wrong with those who prefer, need, and appreciate the slower, simpler life. Like you, I enjoy a “boring” life and spending time with myself. I’ve struggled with the guilt that I sometimes feel when spending a good deal of time at home without any “plans.” There is plenty to do at home anyway, but over time I’ve realized that this lifestyle is preferable and necessary in order for me to be the best version of myself. And it is truly wonderful just to “be.” Thank you for reminding us all of that. I admire how you are able to live a life with purpose while staying true to yourself and listening to yourself. You’re a beautiful soul. Congratulations to you and Luke on welcoming your first child! All best wishes.

With each passing year, I feel the need to live slower and more peacefully. I do have many goals and dreams, such as making my living as an artist and RU-vidr a reality while traveling the world, but it's not in some crazy adventurous way. I want to travel slowly, taking my time learning about each country and culture on a deeper level, spending many months in each place I live, and spend my days outside painting the landscapes and scenes that I see. I also do want to settle down sooner than later, preferably within the next few years. To be able to buy a small plot of land in a forest and live out a peaceful life growing my own food and being present with my future family. Most of my ambitions are creative and spiritual, and I don't want to stress about the projects I'm working on. I want to be grounded and create because I love what I do, not based off what society tells me I should do. I recently turned 30 and have been feeling this deeper than ever before. Yes, I'm working hard trying to make these dreams a reality, but I'm also reminding myself not to rush through life, to simply be present and enjoy each passing moment. Listen to your soul. 🌲💙

When are you going back to work etc" The only voice that matters in your inner voice. You are following that voice and you will be fine.

…as I started catching up with your last few videos, I was thinking back all those years when I had first come across your channel. Then you were this lovely young girl who brought calm and joy through the screen. And as I watched the first few seconds today I realised how you had grown into this gorgeous graceful woman, sharing this journey with all of us. There is this very serene glow about you - it may be your impending motherhood but to me it seems much more, coming from way deeper within you. It is just heart warming to see and an enormous privilege. Thank you for sharing this with me. Wishing you and your growing family all the health, happiness and mischief you desire. 🍀

thank you for validating my need for a slow, gentle life. My nervous system cannot keep up withe the typical American life, nor do I really want to- it is devoid of meaning. I love sitting in our apple orchard and drinking tea, watching our dog play and holding my partner’s hand in silence. Thank you for being you!

I can imagine it’s so quiet where you live. It’s so beautiful.

I thought I was being overly weird when I seemed to lose my worldly ambitions starting when I embraced minimalism and slow living. I guess it's natural now to feel that way when you feel content and grateful for things you have at the present as well as knowing what truly matters. I'm glad I'm not alone. Thanks for this Paola. Meant the world to me 💖
