This discourse is so funny, I've seen Americans respond by showing what 'real' Chinese food is. But it's literally just American Chinese food vs. British Chinese food. Go to China and show them either of these and they'll look at you like you're psychotic 😭
Yep. It's like any take on other countries. Tex-Mex (Americanized Hispanic food). This seems like the equivalent of biscuits/ bread being served at a Mexican restaurant (which from my understanding does NOT happen). But my curiosity seeing "chips" (to me just look like steak fries) makes me question other cultures opinion on things. It's definitely amusing. Half the time I feel stupid asking stuff about different places. But definitely don't know much about other cultures around the world. Like do British Chinese food have fortune cookies too? Again, definitely not actual Chinese food.
To be fair ACTUAL Chinese food is like grilled bugs 🤮🤮🤮🤮 We just took the actually good sauces and noodles or rice dishes but put them with proper meat.
The reason I buy chips from the Chinese takeaway is because it sells better chips then the fish and chip shop near me. So if I want chips I get them from the Indian or Chinese takeaway.
Ah yes, Georgaret Matcher...my favorite Tory. And the thing for Chinese-American cuisine is, many Americans think fortune cookies are an actual part of of the cuisine! The history behind this is interesting. So fortune cookies actually originate in JAPAN! Originating in Edo-period Japan, cookies very similar to the modern fortune cookie were made called the 辻占煎餅/tsujiura senbei. They were made with miso and sesame, different than the modern ones. But like the modern ones, it had fortunes inside called tsujiura or omikuji. These cookies are still sold in Japan today. So how did they become a Chinese-American staple? Well, when Japanese internment happened as the result of the Pearl Harbor attack during WWII, the Chinese community filled the void by producing and selling them themselves. And it remains a massive business for the Chinese
I'm a New Yorker so of course I'm biased for my state, but I agree that NYC has the best food culture in the US. And it's not just hot dogs, halal, bagels, and pizza! Because NYC is home to so many cultures coming together, you get so many options whether it's Filipino, Cuban, Afghani, or Russian! Not to mention NYC's Chinatown scene is wonderful, best Chinese food in the country, and you can also find good Malaysian and Vietnamese cuisine there as well! I also agree that overall, American Chinese food is very much not authentic. And the reason that is, is the same reason why British Chinese food isn't either. Because most Americans and Brits won't eat the real deal. Chinese immigrant cooks in the West in the early 20th century weren’t on a mission to bring the authentic tastes of their own country to the US and Europe. They were out to make a living, and in the restaurant business, that means meeting people’s demands. Over time, people in the UK and US who grew up eating that food create associations with it, and it becomes what they want, when they eat Chinese food. The only restaurants that tend to serve authentic food are in big cities, where there is a population of Chinese immigrants who want a taste of home.
The reason why there are Chinese and Chippys is because when there was a great increase of Chinese people moving to the UK in the 60s (I believe, may have been another year), people didn’t know much about the foods that Chinese places had to offer, so they had to sell more local foods as well in order to be a viable business, hence many Chinese takeaways also being chippys.
as a don who works at a Chinese, chips do not go with Chinese but i understand why Chinese takeaways sell them, however americans are the last people to insult us about our food, literally i’d take the slander from anyone except for the xxxxl burger bumpkins 😁👍🏻
In my 21 years of life, every time I have ever ordered chinese, I've had leftovers. Thats just how you eat a Chinese. You get 2-3 dishes, a side or two, a sauce & eat half then, eat half the next day. More if its for multiple people. P.S. chips from the chinese are cooked in a different oil to most takeaways and taste amazing...
No they don’t?? I’m Australian and our Chinese restaurants and takeaways are way way way better than this (and same with our Indian restaurants and takeaways). The British absolutely butcher asian cuisine fr
Actually maybe that’s just because I live in an area with a high Asian population. If you live in a very white part of australia then the chinese and Indian food might be grim idk LMFAOO
@@FirstnameLastname-zq8oy definitely probably live in a very white area, but have been to a fair few Chinese places (even worked in one) not in my local area and fish and chips is always on the menu
agreed that chips curry sauce isnt chinese food its chippy food, but being able to get rice, chips curry sauce in a tray at the local chinese is pretty fire
I actually agree on this with you George. Although I will never get over the fact you do not like gravy on your roast dinner, absolutely ridiculous, criminal and childlike
I always thought chips was weird. You're ordering a CHINESE. GET RICE. I do absolutely love curry sauce but I'll have it on everything EXCEPT a Chinese. Singapore Vermacelli is my absolute fave (Vermacelli noodles, little bit of every meat and prawns)
1:12 To my fellow Americans. They're basically like steak fries. We have some weird combinations in the US. But British people... Are you okay? Never seen this in a American - Chinese food. Like yeah we have fortune cookies that aren't Chinese. But fries????
The curry sauce out of the chinese is always better than out of a chippy though. My chinese order is Salt Pepper Chicken, Salt Pepper Chicken Balls, Ham Fried Rice, BBQ Ribs and a portion of curry sauce 🤤
I like either white rice (sticky rice too) with sesame chicken and a couple of crab & cheese wontons or sweet and sour chicken or maybe pork, again with white rice. Eggrolls are also a nice side order to either of those. I can't say the chips seem like they belong with that and I've never had a curry so I have no idea about that. That's my opinion from an American perspective but I have to add that I don't think that anything we get in either country is likely to be very authentic. I just try to remember the phrase "To each his own" and leave it at that.
Why do we have them? Because Chinese takeaway chips are the finest delicacy we British have. The royal family are known to order 30 bags of chips from a Chinese takeaway every week!
Good to hear a Brit backing up the New Yorkers 😂 not only does New York have world class food it’s better than most of America ( I need to get there RN for Puerto Rican food )
Chips with Sweet & Sour sauce with some Chicken & Sweetcorn soup is what I get from a Chinese... Absolutely delicious (I'll sometimes get some Chicken Chow Mein if I'm particularly hungry too)
My dad works at a Chinese so he usually gets them for free like 4 times a week at least when we got covid in lockdown the owner delivered enough food to last all 6 of us 2 days. Delicious too
I get noodle soup with a curry and rice and maybe banana fritters after ( Americans call chicken balls general Tso’s chicken or that’s the closest thing to it but I believe it’s smaller and the sauce is already all over the fried chicken and normally has sesame seeds) Americans lmk about general tso
i get chips and curry sauce when i get chinese mainly because the takeaways ive always been to are chinese chippys, and i guess you just get used that being a part of almost all the take aways you get ?
i didnt even know people did chips and curry and i was born and raised in the uk, makes no sense to me 😭 i order the same as george tbh, and it lasts me a few meals, i had these one noodles i forgot the name but they were literally so nice omg
George .. I absolutely agree but but but . That’s what I have with chow mien and rice 🤣 but I agree you cannot call it a Chinese, their chips and curry sauce is way better than the chippys 😂
george slamming people for having chips with their chinese and then saying his order is JUST NOODLES is atrocious how does that qualify as a chinese 😭😭😭
I am Chinese and can confirm none of this is authentic. (I used to work in a takeaway and occasionally we get people come in just to order chips when there is a chippy down the road)
@@hellaprice Yes but it’s tuned to Western tastes and preferences. Chinese Curry is not even a thing in China, neither are Chicken Balls. At home, the food we have is very different in terms of style.
I've had friends from China or their families were from China that say the same thing. Thankfully I was still a kid when I learned that lesson. Yeah there are Chinese families that own restaurants, it's to appease picky eaters and get a more variety of customers. I figured Crab Rangoon wasn't Chinese. But I didn't know that was specifically a US thing.
@@C0dedButt3rfly Also, you probably would’ve noticed on the signs of a lot of Chinese takeaways that they mention ‘Cantonese Cuisine’ rather than just standard ‘Chinese Cuisine.’ That’s since the first takeaways were set up by immigrants from Guangzhou/Hong Kong. So actually, a lot of what is offered here is influenced by Southern Chinese cuisine. I’m from the East so what we have is pretty different as what is considered ‘Chinese food’ is split into subsets of many different unique types of cuisines. I’ve been to Hunan which specialises in adding an incredibly amount of spice to their food and I could never see that ever take off in the UK
I get chips from the Chinese but not all the time. Hard agree on the curry sauce though it just doesn’t need to be there. Chow mein, chicken with vegetables or chicken fried rice is the way to go most of the time with me
If I’m ordering a chippy I will have chips and curry sauce. But ordering anything like that from a Chinese is so pointless just order somewhere else 😭 and George I agree I cannot buy that food just for me. The only time I eat that much is ordering as a group
Northern english chineese takeaway < southern english chinese takeaway. Never heard of chips being part of it until i moved from london to liverpool for 2 years. Curry sauce is nasty too, but chippy in londn is usually kebabs and fish, up there its chinese lmao
the chips at my local chinese are better than the chips at my local chip shop. LOVE chips and curry sauce from the chinese. I know it’s not authentic chinese food nobody is claiming it is but it’s so good
