I have way too much (vintage) lace. What can I sew with it?

I've been collecting lace trim for years. Much of it is vintage yardage I bought at antique stores. I've used some trim for previous historical sewing projects but I wanted to use up some of the lace that's been sitting in my stash for ages. What to make? How about some frilly Edwardian underthings? Specifically, a 1910s petticoat and pair of combinations to start building my late Edwardian wardrobe.

No matter how long we've been seeing, we will never stop making the sewn-to- incorrect-side mistake !

Ugh especially on fabric that looks the same on both sides!

Wait, I thought that was part of the instructions . . . ! I did it on a dress and didn't notice for years. Then I fixed it cuz I couldn't un-see it after that.

Sometimes we just have to step away from a project to protect it from ourselves 😆 It turned out lovely in the end. Your lace collection is something I aspire to.

I know this was so not the focus of this video, but that pin trick to keep from cutting too far on your button holes is GENIUS. It's so simple and makes so much sense. WHY DIDN'T I KNOW ABOUT IT???? That minor freak out aside, I'm LOVING the lacy things! I need to get me to some antique stores and see what I can find!

I forgot where I learned that trick but I was like "omg that's genius," too! thanks!

This was SO satisfying to my lace-loving heart! I love that the petticoat has a placket and a drawstring. What brilliant design!

Thank you for sharing the very real struggles that come when you're tired and sit down to squeeze in some sewing.

I so feel you sewing pain! I think on one shirt I put the collar in backwards no less than 3 times before I called it a day. You sew much better and faster when you are not so fatigued. Love this video. Nice to see a real sewist making those mistakes we all make.

Absolutely, I’m so much less efficient when I’m tired! But sometimes you just want to push thru even though you know you need a rest

I've seen this combination called "tango knickers", since it gives freedom of movements for the dance.

Wow never heard of that name before but yes, lots of movement in these!

When I get tired I also make silly mistakes that I later feel so frustrated with…and you are correct…once one realizes that is what is happening it is nap time (both for one self and the future of the project in question)

About the combinations, Eva Dress have a similar style 1919 repro pattern that also has the flap closure.

That is a lovely bunch of work. Well done. And good for you stepping away from something when the universe politely suggests that you take a wee break from it. Saves on the tears. And the seam ripper. As always, 38FF me is looking forward to what a period appropriate brazier looks like. Because what I've found so far... well, it ain't gonna do much for me. Which raises my continual sense of sympathy for my large busted grandmothers. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown

Thanks! I'm probably going to do a simple bra-like thing?? I think for a larger bust, a boned bust-bodice is probably going to be more supportive. Kinda like what BB did a year or so ago. Unfortunately, not a lot of commercial patterns are available for either style.
@stevezytveld6585

@@DixieDIY Sounds like a sales opportunity for anyone who wants to base a pattern line on 1910's. As for the bra - there is definitely going to be some sort of boning. It's a big 'ask' of not-lycra fabric to take the strain. The BB cage-like construction was more for shaping. Hm, off to the Google Machine.

I love the mentality of using things you already have, someone needs to remind me of that more often.😅 The zigzag lace is so pretty and so is your corset. Does it matches your shoes on purpose or is it a happy accident?
