At the company I work at now, interviewees are brought in by word of mouth because we trust each other more than some random applicant who could mess up the work dynamic. We have to run like a well-oiled machine and don't care to risk a block in the gears. Connections are vital in business because business is and always has been about people.

The point is there is some amount of actual real job opportunities that employers are seeking qualified people to hire for. Maybe 977 is not the real figure, but if it's only 10% of those that are real that's still nearly a hundred jobs which the caller could be qualified for, and she just needs to connect to the one making the hiring decision.

I know several people who are getting laid off or have been actively looking for developer jobs, even getting interviews, but the competition is so steep that they just can't find a good job.

I blame coding bootcamps that make naive inexperienced people think they can land a 60-80k a year job after 6 months of learning development. It can be done if you already have incredible discipline and communication skills, but 95% of the people who do these bootcamps don’t have either.

That's a rough place to be in though if a degree is no longer considered enough to be hired as a junior developer. I mean that's the whole point of college right, to get experience so you can be admitted into the industry. Having to go through college and also work internships at the same time is frankly asking too much, even if people have done it before. I mean I get it. I'm a CS student right now too, and half the people in these classes don't know what a linked list is. But I guess that's another discussion alltogether, as is whether or not requiring a degree is even ethical in the first place for stuff like this...

social anxiety comes from lack of practice and introversion doesn't prevent you from getting out to get a job. It is essential to correct these traits as early in life as you can because as a member of human society, communication is your #1 asset. My son was terrified by phone calls and having to talk to people. I made him practice and forced him to do it. Started with ordering a pizza through phone rather than an app. It's tough at first but it makes all the difference.

I'm one in 7MM, my last 10 jobs, I got a letter that no other persons made it to interview, Company policies prevents hiring the ONLY person interviewed.

For real everyone should get in good with at least one professor. I have two that would write me a letter of recommendation if I were to ask. Not only that he also has connections plus he invites employers to come talk to the class on how to apply. Some people don't take advantage of their time in school.

External recruiter/staffing firms are vendors like the company you lease copier machines from, contract to clean facilities, refill vending machines - so they are paid from business ops funds NOT portions of the person hired's salary.

@@maxwellmiles2430 well there are settlements up here, so there's always gonna be essential services. Schools, daycares, grocery stores, post office, healthcare, etc. Usually there are vacancies. And no, no North Pole, Northern Canadian territories. Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut. A harsh life up here but it pays the bills and we're saving up lots because there's nothing to spend the money on. It does feel like the frontier here. Think wild west frontiers, except a Tundra wasteland up here. There's a lot of freedom up here but equally, a lot harder to survive and get your needs fulfilled. Running out of water is a possibility, water quality also sucks, you need to boil it or else you'd get sick. Food shortages at the grocery store happens often. It is not for the faint of heart.

It's true, but there are a few (so far from all) jobs, that are more suitable for introverts. First of all narrow down your search drastically. What is your strongest strength? What is your realistical (!) ideal job? Where, at which position, at which workplace, are you the realistical (!) ideal employee? How many steps from such a positions are you? Which would be the steps you need to take to narrow the gap? Even as an introvert you can still ask people who have the kind of job you thus have narrowed down, how *exactly* they got that job, they are introverts, too, so you know how to approach them with your question. One size doesn't fit all. You know that, so act accordingly. Many, but not all, of those who would make the hiring decision, would be one or two generations older than you - take that in account. Make that gap feel smaller if you can - learn about the place nd the person(s) where you would like to work. You could also find professional help, either from books, or from professional recruiters, which you should vet and find recommendations for. As an introvert such a scientifical research approach should suit you better than the extroverted social approach. Skip the apply for everything and be aim at being precise and methodical instead. You'll get fewer no's and it will be easier to find out why you got some no's - to learn from. Ask at your school about where their alumni landed, follow up, through linked in, facebook, yearbook, and ask about information, ask in a way that you would like to be asked in five years time.

An additional idea - look up Pennsylvania university and their free questionnaire about a person's strengths. You can also take an online free test to find out your Myer-Briggs personality in test and get suggestions for a suitable careers so you can adjust your job-search, if needs be with learning a little more for a very short time, adding something from your community college or a free on-line course. Introverts are often creative when it comes to what they are interested in - use that, don't follow the crowd, but offer what is unique for you - in a context you could adapt to. You can do this, but let go of wishing you were extroverted, because that will not happen. You can learn social behaviors though, but you need to add a lot of rest, more than others have to, that's the core difference. Good luck!

My college did a wonderful job of setting up career fairs and many of the student chapters of industry-specific societies would have prospective employers drop by weekly or monthly to interview graduating students. It was very hard not to get internships and graduate with a job. This was civil engineering.

Above 6 figures is better of course but it bring more stress and less time with family. For example a recent nurse grad in nj makes 80k. Very decent income. Architect recent grad makes 65k which is ok but not as much as nurse. These are 2 different fields ok? So you have to like what you do. The architect might hate what the nurse daily tasks are and prefers to sit and draw on the computer all day and that’s what brings him/her pleasure satisfaction in their work. Same with the nurse she might dislike sitting on the computer all day looking at the screen and be bored. It’s is not the right career for her/him. So choosing wisely a field that is right for you personally is very important. Also never go and study something that has no job listings not in demand field. It will be waste of time and money. Like people getting degrees in Sociology, History, art history, and etc. also depending where you live is very important. Architect in rural Montana will not make the salary he/ she can make in Manhattan, Chicago or the urban areas why… because construction services are more in demand in urban areas.

It took me over 500 job applications and 50 interviews the first time. The next time I improved my resume and sent out only 55 job applications and had 25 interviews. I have talked to friends and order people and they don’t understand at all. They only do 2 interviews and get hired. I think it’s just my job field in information technology. Other job fields aren’t like this. If I had known this I would have never gone into this. Worse part is they also select the extroverted people over me even if they have less skills. Just screw them they hiring managers are out of touch.

Well knowing people isn't the problem. I know over 200 people, because at school alone there were like 100, but I haven't spoken to 190 of them in a long time. The thing is having real friends is hard and waaaaay lower number.

I'd agree. I've had a lot of luck getting jobs with less wasted interviews by going through temp agencies. They like them because they get to try before they buy.
