Yo ho ahoy! This time I'm briefly examining I Heart Huckabees, a quirky comedy film about existential dread that manages to ask philosophical questions without necessarily making you want to become intimately familiar with the inside of a trash compactor, perhaps. Here we go!

there was a time when I was like 12 and my sister was 14 that she'd come home from school every day and watch this movie. clicking on this video was instinctual. I can't not listen to someone express their love for this movie.

This movie was so self-aware, it was all but wearing a pork-pie hat with a cardigan sweater, smoking hand-rolled cigarettes and drinking super-obscure IPAs. All this, while ironically reading "Bright Lights, Big City" and marking pithy quotes with a lime-green highlighter. For all that, I enjoyed it myself.

Saw this movie when I was far too young to understand it. Then I saw it as a teen and it made more sense but I was still too young to have experienced life. Saw it during the pandemic in my late 20's and found it to be really good. But I always feel weird with David O Russell films given that in this very movie he basically bullied Lilly Tomlin to the point of her breaking down. Makes me think of Kubrick abusing Shelley Duvall or the various other actors in his films, and whether the juice he squeezed out of them was worth it or even necessary.
@Zoroasterisk
@Zoroasterisk Год назад
No performance is worth abuse, ever. It's a cool movie made by some problematic people
@andrewhudson7108
@andrewhudson7108 Год назад
David also bullied the crew on Three Kings to the point where George Clooney got into a physical fight with him over it. Everyone I know who’s worked with Clooney has nothing but lovely things to say about him.
@mickbanner
@mickbanner Год назад
Honestly. Who gives a crap if the director is an arsehole. I care if I have to deal with the bloke...but I don't. I have to decide if this movie is worth watching. (I realise some people like to make a stand morally, and there ARE limits of atrocities I'll decide not to watch something... but being an onset bully ain't on my list) 🤷
@FreddyMacT
@FreddyMacT Год назад
@@mickbanner I mean who cares... yes, I'm being too moral in pondering the limits of onset behaviour. Fuck it, why should I care if they ever treat people like shit, I mean if I worked there... sure that would suck, but if it doesn't happen to me, clearly it shouldn't register to me in any measurable way. Phew
@mickbanner
@mickbanner Год назад
@Freddy McTickles I find it easy to seperate the art from the arsehole. But I get that some can't and choose not to. But boycotting all arseholes (while perfectly correct morally) is pretty fucking boring and sanitised. I'm not gonna sit here and condone any/all he's done. But I can still appreciate art from a 'voice' that had something to say even if he bullied his actors and made their lives hell. People only give a shit because it was filmed and we're able to see it first hand. Directors flying off the handle close to what was filmed all the ruddy time, thousands of the best movies are made by megalomaniac 'auteurs' hellbent on making the crew as tortured as he is making the film. Before mindlessly cancelling the bloke and boycotting all his movies...why not see if you engage with his art in spite of who is painting it.

I did really enjoy this film, but I couldnt help but get a real discount Wes Anderson vibe from it. While not as overt, Anderson films have covered the same kind of crises as well, and often in a way that, for me at least, packed far more of an emotional punch. Still, there is something really charming about I Heart Huckabees and it never feels too up itself when it really could have been given its surreal quirky style.

I loved how weird "I ❤ Huckabees" turned out to be. The editing is strange and odd at certain points. But Wow! It really said something. Especially about how we can't keep enlightenment all the time, those are just these temporary autonomous zones and then we have to interact with the illusion of the real world, the maya. Then snacking themselves in the face was such a great way to illustrate that. 😂

I was going to acknowledge that the director famously went off on Lily Tomlin or something involving her in one scene, and Lily downplayed it, but it just seemed so disrespectful and abusive to me. You seemed to mention that around 9:00 in the video. I didn't know that his behavior traveled off set into his family. That's terrible. That behind-the-scenes leak was a big reason I refused to see it.

O. Russel is like a movie villain the way he runs around the set, vanishing through one door way, only to come out of another, still ranting away! If it weren't for the fact he was trying to publically humiliate one of his actors, it would be hilarious!
