An edgy underground cartoonist outfit called the Air Pirates actually got legal permission to do a single-issue parody of Mickey Mouse and other characters back in the '80s after a big fight with Disney (it was actually hugely important for establishing right to parody as fair use of intellectual property, which is the only reason shows like South Park have been able to exist). It involved Minnie giving Mickey a bj at one point iirc lol. Those people are my heroes.

Whoever wrote this made one mistake. Cartoons were not considered just for kids until around the 50s. In the first half of the 1900s cartoons were for everyone.

@@MrBearcat9 there have always been some adult cartoons. Felix the cat springs to mind. But I was talking about societies attitude towards them. It wasn't until the 1950s that people thought of cartoons (and comic books) as kids entertainment and looked down on adults who liked them.

Served in 2 world wars... that means at the latest he served in early 1918 and legally couldn't be younger than 18 when he joined, so wa born at the latest in 1900. The oldest living person was about 122 years old and assuming this story was "told" by this old man in 2023... There's no contending if he's the oldest or not. :p This is not serious, I'm just being silly.

Author. It's a complex thing. Folks are proudly members of the gypsy/traveler culture (and not just Roma, a lot of folks of Irish descent). But others view it as an insult somewhat like "Redneck" but with heavier cultural implications. I'm glad my little tidbit had the desired effect though, and started a few conversations.

I made the mistake of using it around friends from that area and they were very quick to tell me it's not a religion, it's not about travelling, it was made as an insult just as any other slur. No one from those cultures use that term for themselves. I know you didn't mean it maliciously, but I think maybe it should be avoided next time! Absolutely brilliant story nonetheless. Pagan is a much better term, or any religious terms surrounding the intended implications. A lot of what you described sounded like paganism!

Bendy and the Ink Machine did a better "Steam Boat Willie" horror story movie before Mickey Mouse entered the public domain, thats what I think. I dont understand why the new Mickey Mouse horror movie couldnt be something like Bendy. Good job with the story by the way, author! I was unsettled

Author Love bendy! So much. Had to re write this a couple times because I didn't want to try and write something that was like that. I couldn't compete with how they pulled everything off. I fact when I was thinking "How can I make sure of that?", the first thing that came to mind was their April fools joke from a few years back. Hence why I went with the military, guns blazing kind of theme.

Author. Great point I agree with %100. Spoiler for a joke in episode 3. That being said, as youve picked up on it, kind of not? Leroy ( leh wah) is his last name, Gilbert is his first. Unlike his boss (Canadian, wanted to seem more cultured.), he actually was born in France. His boss being the dick he is, and being bad at French, just called him Leroy. But because one white dude was calling him that, no one questioned it. Slow burn to a very human moment of comic relief in the finale. Wanted to contrast how easy Ethan corrects folks with how Gilbert had to handle things.

Author Irl, the difference is interesting, traveller/gypsy culture is a cool subset of the culture. That is often painted poorly. While a lot of folks would take it as an insult, a lot are proud. Both Irish and Roma. Now in my universe the difference is more supernatural in nature. But the flak they take is similar.

@@misspixie774 Author. Yeah, something I chucked in due to experience. I get why folks don't know though. I mean, you don't want to go around assuming it's something someone wants to be called. Like most things it's personal to the individual, but a super interesting subject to look into. I'm glad my lil splatterpunk story is sparking an insiteful conversation on identity though.

I'm assuming this an older story, unless they want us to believe the protagonist is somewhere in his 120s at least if he fought in WWI. Also, just a historical nitpick, but no one in the 1920s would be likely to say cartoons were "kid stuff", animation didn't really develop that association in the West until around the '60s (when it started to suck, basically), it was enjoyed and marketed toward all-ages prior to that (comics also weren't seen as specifically geared towards young people until around the same time, after which there was a big effort to sanitize them so much with the draconian Comics Code--which censored them about as much as RU-vid censors big creators these days--that ironically no one but kids wanted to read them anymore for a long time afterwards). '20s cartoons (apart from Disney) were actually often pretty full of adult themes, and could be disturbing.
