I've had it for about 4 months. They had a global outage a while back for a few hours. That's been the only downtime besides 20 minutes during a very heavy rain storm. Lighter rain slows it down a little. Other than that it's been great.

49 ms is really good for SL. Also fyi - there are 8 bits in a byte, - so you would say 7 megabits or 100 megabits. You always measure internet speed in bits not bytes. Glad this worked out so well for you.

I was happy to get Starlink just like you. I’ve got it when It was available for me. I’ve had it for about 9 months and xfinity just laid fiber in my neighborhood. Im even happier now because I will get 2 cell phones service and internet for under $100!!! Plus my speed will be 5-10 times better!

Love this! Your experience mirrors mine--25 years out in the woods in my case, dial-up, then slow crawlin' DSL. Haven't got the Starlink yet--it's on the FedEx truck right now. Anything above 2.5 Mbps download will be an improvement for me.

I have Starlink as our primary connection and then Land based fibre broadband as secondary, I use the secondary for all the smart home kit. My wife and I both work from home so I didn't want to risk losing connectivity. Love our Starlink and it's 2 to 4x faster than our land based connection, depending on the day :-) Just a correction on what Mbps stand for , a lot of people make this mistake : The term “megabits” is almost always used to show how much data you can transfer across a network in a second, abbreviated as Mbps. For example, an internet connection may have a bandwidth (or speed) of up to 940Mbps. The term “megabytes” is almost always used to show how much data a storage device can transfer in a second, abbreviated as MBps (or MB/s). For example, an SSD may record data it receives at 550MB/s.
@ProjectDIY2

Thanks for the information, I was not aware of the difference!
@cesarpegado69
@cesarpegado69 9 месяцев назад
@@ProjectDIY2 no worries, there are 8 bits in a byte so quite a difference, if I was getting 200MBps = 1600Mbps 🤯

Liked the video. I’m in a similar situation to you with slow internet so I bought Starlink only 2 weeks ago too but I’m living in France! The one thing additional on your video which is important to comment on is when connecting up the cable through any external walls. Most homes here are stone so making a hole in the wall is not easy like you demonstrated. In addition when you pushed the cable connector through the wall you put through the end that connects to the router. This is a moulded L shaped connector that is too large generally to pass in any solid exterior wall. Fortunately for any one who doesn’t have the luxury of easy access and has to drill holes through stone, rock or brick then you should disconnect the connector the other end which is connected to the satellite dish as this is not a moulded L shape and folds flat designed obviously for passing the cable easily through a smaller hole. If you need to drill a hole into stone or brick you will need to drill a 3/4 inch hole (20mm) and put the cable through conduit to stop snagging. Hope this extra tip helps. Good luck from your European friends across the pond….
@ProjectDIY2
@ProjectDIY2 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for the kind comments! Yes you are correct, and I didn’t think of it at the time, disconnecting it from the dish would have solved that problem.

I'm in southern middle Tennessee and I ordered Starlink as soon as I found out it was available here. Our only options were the infamous Hughesnet or Hotspots from our phone companies. We tried Hughes at first and quickly found out why it's infamous so we went with a Hotspot from Verizon and that did work well for a few years but we pretty much lost the signal when Verizon shut down the old tower. So we switched to AT&T's Hotspot and while it was better than Verizon's at first, it seems to have a fading signal at times. I have not received the Starlink unit yet but from all the vids I have watched, it seems to be the best way to go. I will most likely also add a Mesh network to it as well. Hope it holds up in bad weather!

@@ProjectDIY2 just alil wind and lite rain. It's also on the normal stand out came with on a flat metal roof. App speeds are fast from what starlink app says. Ookla says half of starlink so 50mbps. It should be higher. I'm thinking it's the metal roof or the satellite and modem are to close. 🤷

We have no ISP’s that service our area except ViaSat and HughesNet which we have both tried and found them be unusable and way way overpriced. Our internet for the last 10 years has been a jailbroken iPhone with “unlimited” data connected to a WiFi router. 4-5mbs down and 0.05mbps upload.

very interested in your Starlink experience, I assume you are near Lexington KY? The only reason I ask that is that we have a cabin in Blue Creek OH and it looks like Starlink MAY be available for us. We have had many issues with Wild Blue/Exede/Viasat or whatever the heck they're called now and looked into DSL then Fiber and since we're so far off the road, it'd cost $800-$1000 to string the cable or fiber to the house. Would love to see an update sometime in the future. Some places were showing $600-$2500 for the initial cost, hate to be nosy but could you explain costs sometime? If it was close to $600 for the initial and it worked good, I could live with that compared to the 800-1000 and I realize there is a monthly fee.
@ProjectDIY2

Yes I’m close to Lexington. Cost for the equipment was $600 plus $120 per month. I plan to do an update soon. 😉

Why did the second speed test still show Windstream? Also having your cable to the dish running across your hot metal roof as it will reduce your speed and cause some distortion.

Good question, I’m not sure. Every speed test after that says Starlink. Browser cache maybe? Good to know about the cable. I’ll look into that! Thanks!

Very interesting. Can weather affect your signal. We had satellite internet with Wildblue at one time, and heavy rain would disrupt the signal.
@ProjectDIY2

It can, so far stormy weather hasn’t affected it. It has a built in heater on the dish to melt snow and ice off in the winter time.

I have had mine for 3 months. We had some really bad storms here, and I lost my internet for about 15 minutes, But with a landline, I would lose it for many hours at a time. I have put mine on a UPS, so I will still have internet even if we lose power. I live in Italy and receive about 150-250 -- 350 Down and 25-30 -- 50 Up. Few people have it here now.

I haven't had any issues with the Wi-Fi signal. I have a small house though, 1600sq ft. I have several Ring cameras outside and they connect just fine. I would say the signal strength is what you would expect from a good quality Wi-Fi router.
