This may be your best video yet, Carl. I whole heartedly agree! One of my favorite features of Day One is "On This Day". For me, it's a feedback loop to reflect, grow, and improve. Likewise, reviewing recent journal entries for consistent themes in "lessons learned" helps me with planning my goals. For example, if I see a lot of journal entries with "I regret not spending more time reading", then I know I need to make that a priority this month.
@Carl_Pullein
@Carl_Pullein Год назад
Thank you, Doug. Love that "lessons learned" idea. That will a great resource later.

As much as I like technology, I've found that keeping some things analog, especially for journaling, is better, at least for me. It forces me to slow down my mind to match the speed of my hand. Some might see that as a limitation, but for me, journaling is about self reflection. And something about the simplicity of using pen and paper for a small part of my day when everything is digital makes me feel more grounded and tethered more to the moment and reality. That's just me, though.
@Carl_Pullein

So true. I like the convenience of digital, but there's still a little part of me that craves for pen and paper.

I've been journaling since I was a kid, on and off. My first diary was when I was 7 years old and it has a few hand-written, scratchy entries. It's cute. I've tried all sorts of journals since then. Art Journaling, Junk journaling, handwriting, the days of Franklin Planners, specialty papers, etc. I do love the feel of the paper book and the doodling I can do in free space but I get FAR more out of Day One. Day One's features of "On This Day" are really helping me to learn about previous entries. The search feature, the tagging features, the daily prompts, all very beneficial. I'm +500 days into my Day One journals. I even have had some of them printed. Love that too, then I stick in postcards and such at the back once printed. I don't use it to just journal, but also you mentioned goals. While maybe not my goals, it does help me with projects such as flower gardening, etc. The voice recording that I can do while on my walk or similar is wonderful. You are right about the morning time! Tea and my iPad. It's perfect.

I’ve been journaling for a couple of years now consistently. I write in the evenings as the kids are asleep. It’s not easy, but its rewarding and like you say helps give perspective. The best advice for someone starting out is to try not to put too much pressure on yourself. Start with a simple sentence or a few words. Even if that’s all you do for a few weeks or months, when you read them back it brings so much of the day back into focus. Little and often is best way to get the habit going..
@Carl_Pullein
@Carl_Pullein Год назад
Completely agree with you there. It's not how much you write; it's about what you write. Weather, who you had lunch or dinner with etc.

Great video - thank you! Writer Julia Cameron has a great 'take' on journaling as well - she calls them Morning Pages - I've been writing 3 Pages each morning for 12 years - it really helps! Thank you for all you do, Sir. Cheers from Texas !

Great video, Carl. I've wanted to use a physical notebook to journal, then I thought I wanted to keep it all digital, but then it would take away my handwritten notes because they were in my handwriting. I may start to do this in a physical journal and could certainly insert a photo of my handwritten notes in the Apple Notes app, too.
@Carl_Pullein
@Carl_Pullein Год назад
That's true, Kurt. I still pine for the handwritten journal sometimes.

Hi Carl, Thanks for sharing. Agree that a journal is more than capturing things, it's about thoughts, dreams, events & emotions - the good & the bad. I tried digital and went back to pen/paper - it's more therapeutic for myself. Yes - I too write mainly the morning , 5-30 minutes for as soon as I have woken up while having my water. keep up the good work!

Thank you Carl, one of the best video about journaling I've ever seen! Personally, I have intermittently written my morning journal for the past 3 years since I read the book 'The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. This year, I stopped after about 4 months, but your video has reignited my desire to start writing again!

Thank you, Michele. When I started, it was a bit hit-and-miss. It was when I built it into my morning routines that I began to be more consistent. Sit down with my morning coffee and begin writing. Now it's one of my favourite times of the day. 🙂

Nice one, Carl! Journaling really is a life changing habbit. I really love the Day One app, I´ve been using it for years. Even when I'm the mood to write by hand I use the scan to pdf function on the app, to take advantage of the On this day feature, even with the things I write on paper. It's really very nice to write on paper, but the you just can beat the benefits to using a digital diary, right? Cheers!

Wow, as an old conservative gal from across the pond, I’ve never heard 0f the Benn and Clark. But doing a tiny bit of research am I correct in my assumption they were polar opposites of the political spectrum? Seems Benn leaned socialist whereas Clark clung to ultra right.
@Carl_Pullein
@Carl_Pullein Месяц назад
Yes. Tony Benn was very left. What I liked about him was that he was a conviction politician. He believed in what he stood for. Although I rarely agreed with him politically, I would always listen to what he had to say. And Clark wasn't quite ultra-right, but he was undoubtedly on the right of the Conservative party. 🙂

Watched the video till the end. Honestly I’ve watch many and I tried it few times however I didn’t see benefits. I have no time for it to write down or reflect as you mentioned and I would not like to look at the past or read about awful things that happened in the past (same situation with photos captured). I feel I would never look back. Plus daily life routine, feels everyday entry would be similar thing. Your talk is motivating I think I may give it a try

Every day I store it in a word doc and then transfer it to notion as a this day in history. With photos. Used to transfer it to Evernote but hit that 200 mb limit so had to switch to notion. Since 1996. One of the most valuable things I do!

You should do more B-rolls with Louis ;) The doggie is so cute 😍 I have only recently started journaling. For me it's already the tool, it has to be simple and straightforward, otherwise I don't use it. I find it interesting to reflect on the day and to give myself feedback on what went well or badly and what you can perhaps do better. But I also find it interesting (and you can certainly use it just for that) to collect ideas that come to mind during the day

Hi Carl, many, many, many thanks for sharing this. I've been trying for many years to maintain a journal, but like you were mentioning, some kind of setback always tends to catch up with you and pull the brakes on your entire life. Journal, task and time management, with all the to do lists, etc. just get tossed overboard until you get hold of yourself again. The only problem is, getting caught up again can be a real nightmare. Your video has inspired me to think a little differently. 🤝

Important is to conduct reviews on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis to gain insights. Additionally, it's also possible to document events as they happen, not just in the morning and evening.

Ah, yes, true. I prefer to just give my journal 10 minutes a day. That keeps it enjoyable, and I love the anticipation of writing. If it becomes more than that it will lose that sense of uniqueness and become a chore.

I have a hand written journal but i limit myself to mentioning the facts - weather, what I did in the house etc. But I need also to write down my feelings, my goals, my anxiousness in regard to some things I have to do. I love your videos Carl. The task that I find hardest are the tasks, that aren’t important right now but for every day they get slightly more important. I can’t think of a good generic example right now, but the simplest thing I can think of is something like mowing the lawn. Is it critical on day 1, no, but for every day you leave it it slightly increases in importance. So from a procrastination perspective, I find it is easy to say I should do it early., but that gives me too many tasks, in work I have lots of these tasks that needs doing but only critical if I leave them long enough. Any thoughts of how to prioritise task like that?
@Carl_Pullein
@Carl_Pullein Год назад
Hi Jon, being aware of them is the first step. Once you know they are growing in importance, you've got to stop, look at it and say; "right, I'm doing that today" or "I will do that tomorrow." It's the only way I have found it to work. Being intentional about what you will do today.
