I had one, a 1976. (with the upgraded 48V battery! SIX Blazing Horsepower!) They are breathtakingly unsafe, slower than justice, they have the same top speed as Pangea. Press & Pray brakes. Wobble World steering. A stupendously flimsy body, whose exposed rivets and build quality will have you convinced it was assembled by squirrels in rehab. As practical as a tandem unicycle, as comfortable as corrective pants, the Commuta-Car (and its' predecessor the Sebring Vangard) were a motorized blight. You could have at least bought a Zagato Zele or Fairthorpe Electron. Hurrumph! Alden

It's quirky, slightly dysfunctional, obscure, and both high-tech and kind of awkward. Yup, it's perfect.

That five point seat belt is by far the most robust and best engineered part of the "car".

I've been poking around on a 48v CitiVan, just before they became the Comuta-Car with the huge bumpers. The front wheels do not have independent suspension, but are tied together on a solid beam with leaf-spring suspension. If one front wheel is lifted on a bump, the other front wheel is twisted sideways by the beam, which reduces traction and causes the vehicle to turn to the side by itself away from the bump, when you are driving straight. On a rough road the steering is constantly veering left and right by itself. All other modern road vehicles use independent / double wishbone suspension to solve this traction and veering problem.

I have a 1977 Citicar that I love. Been doing upgrades like a Solar panel on the roof, A hood that opens, etc. Great job with the car!! My Red Citicar is called "Sparky".

A sign shop I used to do work with had one of these in the corner that they were eventually going to get around to restoring. It always fascinated me.

i had a co-worker who had one of these, it was highly modified to a 96 volt system with a modern motor controller and it had airbag suspension with hydraulic shocks and a different steering gearbox that was less skittish than the stock one. he also put wider wheels and tires on it and made fiberglass fender flares. it actually had a nice ride and didn't rattle as bad as the stock ones do.

OMG. I love those Commuta cars! I'm an electric vehicle guy with two Auranthetic motorcycles. I so wanted to buy one of those when I lived on a small island. So cool!!! I love it but I would probably do something about those seatbelts. They look kind of dodgy. Usually those go through the seat so they don't come off your shoulder and slip through.

Dude, I have one of those! I've never seen another one on the road. (So, technically, mine is a '76 CitiCar--they changed the name to Comuta-Car in '79. Also, mine is currently in pieces in my back yard.) It's great to see one actually driving and in pretty good shape.

First thing to do is upgrade the control electronics. Replace whatever inefficient and ancient speed control it has with a modern PWM system and you'll get more range and better acceleration even with the lead acid batteries. Upgrading to AGM batteries designed for deep discharge will also improve range and allow for implementing a faster charging system. Or skip right to a lithium-ion battery system and a fancy brushless DC motor. Could reduce weight and make it able to go scary fast.
