Mark Shamy it has to do with her brain tumor and the fact she’s getting surgery and will be going through the same things I’m going through. Don’t really need to go into deep details with a stranger on the Internet, never said it had anything to do with robots. I should have just written the comment in Swedish.
Strange Gal, but very straaange..... No really I loved it, she's a strange bird, god bless her way and may she create the perfect daily pill despenser for old people, that feeds them too..:), much love, thanks for sharing you wonderful Millenial(my son's one of em' too, god bless his heart).
When I invented the way of relieving stage fright it wasn't "naked". Even though the first person I told it to, ED, spread it around as "naked". It actually is sitting on a toilet with their pants down. My inventions may not be as much fun as yours, but my round toothbrush no longer rolls on it side when I put it down while putting the top back on the toothpaste. And thanks to another of my inventions spoons no longer go down into the disposal, but cat food does.
At the time of this talk, she had a golf ball sized brain tumor, and just about three weeks after this she had brain surgery to remove it. And she still delivered this inspiring talk about shity robots. She is incredible!
If your goal is failing and: You succeed at failing, then you have succeeded If you fail at failing, that means you have also succeded technically It's a win win!
the purpose of this talk is don't be boring, don't be scare, play, do what you want, and with practice maybe you get there, if not, you had fun in the process and you lived
I admire her because she actually wants to use her brain to do things that are constructive and learn about things. It seems so many today are content to let everyone else do their thinking for them.
Man, this viewpoint is really something. I'm not an engineer, but I am studying science, and I'm also an artist. The notion of this fearless creativity, a way to defeat performance anxiety and the need to succeed at everything which a lot of us (myself included) deal with, is really powerful I think.
Simone is incredible because she has rediscovered the artistic/creative side of engineering that is lost on so many. I love what your doing for Engineering Simone and I really hope you have a good recovery from your upcoming surgery that you talked about in your last video :)
I'm too old to marry you, but can my wife and I adopt you?? Thanks for creating one of the few Ted talks that I didn't think was elitist pablum. As a computer programmer with over 40 years experience, I have seen over and over again that we learn more from our failures than our successes. Giving someone the opportunity to fail as they learn is the best way to mentor anyone. Reading books on how successful people did it is a waste of time, reading books on how people failed is far more useful. I don't want to know the 10 things Elon Musk did to become rich, I want to read about the 10 things Johnny Depp did to become poor so I don't do them. Your machines are not useless, they help bring joy to many people. Thank you Simone. Hoping for the best for you.
This comment is interesting because its really kinda harmless on the surface but it makes me think about something. It reminds me that if Simone were a man, you wouldn't say you wanted to adopt him. In fact, it would be kinda weird. That would be infantilizing him, and you wouldn't do that to a man because it would be disrespectful and "emasculating". But Simone is a woman, and saying this is supposed to be cute and endearing or something. But why? Shes an adult, a grown woman and more than capable of taking care of herself. At the very least, she is over 18 years old. She doesn't need new parents. Its like that character trope of ultrapowerful women in cartoons who are gimped with child-like intellect and maturity. Why do this?
I’ve been watching TEDx talks for years trying to get inspiration about where to go in my life. How ironic is it that this useless talk probably has had the most substantial difference on me? 🤔☺️
Thank you Simone. I'm a baby boomer and an engineer. You have shown me the enthusiasm that was missing in my life. I realized I lived my life as a robot instead of designing and building a robot. You inspired me to built useless things.
ZuhaibMD I studied electrical engineering and got into robots via the IEEE robotics team at my university. But mechanical engineering also lends itself to robotics.
Or - like Simone - you just do it. There is so much literature, discussion groups, open maker labs, ... as well as parts, cheap mini computers, ... etc. available today - an Arduino Board and a few servo motors will only set you back a few bucks, so even if you screw up in your first tries, it's not big deal (and you'll definitely learn a lot in the process).
This is why I’m taking maths and physics for engineering next year, I’m scared of being the only girl, but I love making things and want to make school fun
@@Her01panda Nah I tried to join the robotics club at my school, ended up quitting because I felt really lonely and intimidated. It's ok though because I'm starting my own club lol
OMG I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING!!! She tried so hard to make them laugh and have fun with her yet no one did!! I laughed basically the whole time while watching this but they all seemed so unimpressed by her!!
At first I wasn’t sure why I loved this so much but i figured it out. I loved this so much because she is so full of personality and humility, and has come to this beautiful place of just doing and being and creating without trying to fit a mold or criticizing herself. Beautiful 💕
@@Gerno_ but to be constructed, criticism has to be directed at the things you do and how you do them, not who you are. We often redirect our criticism to ourselves as if our performance reflects who we are and our worth as humans. It doesn't.
I'm tearing up. That was me. Her past self was just like I was, and to be honest I still am. Performance anxiety is one of the worst feelings, because it holds you back from doing these incredible things you know you will enjoy. I still struggle with it every day, being a student and all, but I'm going to take Simone's words to heart because this is incredible. I might not be able to make useless robots (yet), but perhaps I can start at my struggle with making art and perhaps make a useless drawing OF a robot. Just because it's fun.
Hey there, I can relate. I also have bad performance anxiety. I loved making art, all throughout my life. Eventually, I went to college for art. By the time I came out of it, school had given me performance anxiety about art, as well. I stopped drawing, for years. I didn’t know how to make art for the joy of it anymore. Recently, I started acrylic pour painting. The nice thing about it is that you end up with a finished piece of art, one way or another. Start to finish, you can be done in half an hour. Do this enough, and you start to think of yourself as an artist who finishes art. Once you move past that performance anxiety, it may become easier to move that confidence to other kinds of art. I recommend it. It’s kind of like Simone was saying about approaching it differently, playfully. Find something playful, and you’ll find your way into art.
Wow I saw that video in my recommended and didn’t think much of it.. but then I saw this video. I’m sad this kinda thing has to befall good people. Although there’s nothing I can do to help she seems like a strong person and I’ll pray she makes it through okay
Simone, if you wear that vest on a date you can never say "Hey! My eyes are up here!"Keep up the good work making useless things, and keep on having fun, too! ((HUGS))
They are useless in that they don't provide anything except entertainment, which is subjective as literally anything can be entertainment. A Starburst wrapper can be more entertaining than a roller coaster or a video game to some. It took you more words to describe why they're not useless, than to just say they were useless. Such is postmodernism.
Lake Michigan, you have obviously never suffered from ADHD... with ADHD, EVERYTHING is more entertaining than EVERYTHING else. It's also one of the things that gives those of us with ADHD our signature innovative personalities! :D
Poor old Simone is about to go for major surgery for a brain tumour. She is a beautiful funny person. Please check out her RU-vid page and send her loads of best wishes and love :D
I almost cried when she said that it's a lesson in humility that gets lost while inventing. That is true and right from the heart. Thanks Simone. You're always Awesome! God Bless you.
Simone is awesome! She's such a strong, , fun, intelligent, and independent person, who I know will overcome her latest health issue. NOTHING can stop her! x Loved this talk :-)
She's truly comfortable being weird with her stuff I really admire her, she's building whatever she wants to. That's the beauty of Engineering, Computer Science, Architecture, and many other fields out there
She is one of those rare people with such an attractive set of personality quirks, that she could basically do anything that gets her talking on camera and she creates a minimum fanbase that is larger than some cable tv channels. It is NOT like she tries to engineer fixes for problems that are outside the box, and with sheer statistics on her side makes something useful once every blue moon. NO! Her whole schtick is to make absolutely ridiculous inventions with her first rule is that it will be completely useless!?!?!? LoL, and I love watching! It is crazy!
I don't know Simone personally but I watch all her videos because she has an infectious attitude to life and her smile and her laugh will make you do the same. So I just want to say every person who watches this should go and subscribe to Simones channel and also watch all of her videos it will help her a lot. Of course you will come across a video she posted recently and you will understand how you will be helping her. Thanks
bee boi you’re a little kid. If you’re an adult... well that’s even worse. People read your reply and roll their eyes. I’d be embarrassed if I were you.
bee boi truth is factual. Not subjective. So no, it’s not the truth but as you grow up and go to school, you’ll understand things like this. I’m not disagreeing with you or agreeing with you. Just pointing out your lack of understanding of certain words.
Simone! You are the cutest thing ever. I love your work. Love your spirit. Love the inspiration you give the world. I am praying for you and get well soon!
Really enjoyed it. Definitely my type of humor: The brave popcorns that we’re sacrificed for science. Some clever puns with dry humor. Sprinkled in with well intended advice. Just sweet content.
Brielle Everson Wow this is the first time I’ve ever seen a fellow Brielle in a comments section. We’re gonna have to fight to see who the alpha is though (it’s me), so expect an email
I don't know what it is about you l, but you are such a joy to watch. Your enthusiasm and humility are both mesmerizing and intoxicating. It's so refreshing to see someone express herself and open up in a way that is so honest, it's akin to the innocence of child-like wonder. Ultimately, it's (IMHO) you being you in the most genuine sense possible which is intensely captivating, not because of the beauty you possess on the "outside", rather a reflection of the beauty you possess within. You are truly a treasure. Thank you for sharing that beauty with us, the viewers. I smile and laugh (along with you) every time you put an invention to the test. It is 'joy' in the most basic and innocent yet, fulfilling of senses. It's you being YOU, which is something fantastic. Thank you.
Really good talk! As a self taught developer, I spent a lot of time making useless things so that I could learn and out of that created some cool stuff. If it wasn't for some of those projects I may never found a decent job.
I took "multi media" in 2002. It was so early in the web that Divs and CSS was considered modern. Learning Flash and Director. I wanted to learn more server-side languages and at the time probably could have taken computer science and in the long run may have been better. But I wasn't interested in learning those languages at the time. I also really enjoyed design, video, and 3d.
I often find that I'll spend hours constructing a complex solution to a problem, only to find out near the end that there's a simple prepackaged solution to accomplish the same thing. I don't let it get me down though, because I always end up learning a LOT along the way and come out a better person in the end :)
There is a lot of value in getting a degree in Software Engineering. Just graduated with mine. While self-taught is a good way to start, there are some things that you have to experience to learn. Like, my college has a bunch of classes that mock an Agile development process, and we even have a class dedicated to learning how to work within a team, our SWE department head is honestly, the best in my opinion (obviously, I'm a bit biased). I think without that kind of knowledge, starting a job in the SWE world is fairly difficult. The degree also helps you to demand a MUCH higher salary(currently have a starting salary of 71k, and I'm so ecstatic about it! :D) Shoutout to Shippensburg University CS&E department!
Did you know this lady just recently found out she had a brain tumor? She’s amazing. I messaged her on Facebook when I first saw her videos and she replied. We talked for like 10 minutes but it was enough. I literally only watched this video because of her. I don’t care for ted talks, but she gave me 10 minutes, so I’m goin to remember that forever
