As a BMW fan, I totally agree with Scotty on this one. These old naturally aspirated straight-6 BMWs were far better in almost every sense than the vast majority of new ones, particularly in terms of reliability. And even when something breaks down, the cost of repair is still relatively cheap due to simpler engineering.

Ive had 9 of these now, from a 318i, 323is, 325is, 328i, and a 95 dakar yellow m3 coupe which I daily drive right now and love. These inline 6's are BULLETPROOF, affordable, easy to maintain and modify, and parts can be found everywhere in junkyards and damn near everything is interchangeable. Transmissions are solid as hell too, everyone says the obd1 325 getrag transmissions suck but ive never had issues with any, and the 96+ZF transmissions are strong asf and in a bunch of other BMW's. Diff is bulletproof minus the front bolt that always breaks (once you start to really race and beat these cars) but honestly its the best bang for your buck fun all around platform. But prices are starting to go up because everyone is just realizing now how good they are lol.

some of us are just like Scotty, why ? Im his age and learned how to repair all my own cars since 16 yrs old. So up till today I can rebuild my own motor, and Im a painting contractor. This comes over not wanting to tow a car to a repair shop that see’s you as a sap needing them for any price they quote you caus your stuck with them. Taking risks in life diving into your own repairs gives a sense of pride and immense confidence in your abilities. Take the risk of doing major repairs at home ( love youtube videos and those who share their expertise). My first rebuild of my 1985 Honda CRX motor was without help. It was the high fuel model and worth keeping. We are like Scotty because connecting with your car on this level allows you to self diagnose problems on the spot, even while traveling . Why wouldnt you want to know about your cars mechanical workings. Repair shops hate people like me, they detect Im asking questions they would rather not answer so they can inflate the quote. I know too much now, so I end up doing repairs to my own vehicle that most shops dont do anyway. Most shops do simple repairs, they arent into rebuilding motors. Start with a vehicle that is a second car you buy just to experiment on while you have a backup car. Learn something. Some of this stuff isnt that difficult, it just takes guts to try. My last repair was my 2000 Ford E250 intake manifold and gasket. It looked daunting to see all the stuff that needed to be removed before you get the manifold off. I did watch a video, but it was hard to see the steps he took to remove his manifold. Reason I did this work, the van isnt worth that much to pay 1,000 for a shop to do it, just as you do more and more of these repairs, your vehicle becomes reliable more and more that you do it yourself. Any other van might have too many problems on the horizon you cant forsee. After 10 yrs of ownership and my own buildup of repairs, Im confident so much more in this vans longevity. So when you think Scotty is cheap, that has nothing to do with it. New cars are expensive to buy, Id rather see less mechanically inclined people to lease less expensive cars and upgrade them every 3 years. You can lease for 185.00 per month a car like a VW Jetta, never pay for repairs and drive a new car so often.

hugot12 Sounds inspiring. Sadly the four times I tried to do something on a car I reached half way because I didn't have the right tools nor was very happy about breaking stuff. Since kid I pursue disassembling everything I can trying to repair whatever it is (but lacking enough knowledge). I should say only about 30% ends up in the same shape it was before. The rest either breaks or is left incomplete and occupying space for years to come...
@hugot12
@hugot12 3 года назад
@@apexseal2811 Trust me I had my share of broken things, but in the process through more years and buying tools, it paid off in good experience. Alot of auto parts loan the expensive necessary tools like ball joint compressors, strut coil compressors. There is no reason to believe everyone needs to bust knuckles on cars. I admire guys making easier money with more brains than me, let other guys do their repairs. Sounds like you gave it the yankee try at it. My dad always said, whatever work you do, just be the best at it. thanks for sharing your experience

I daily a 1996 pre facelift e36 328i - in my ownership I’ve put 54,000km on it, that’s in the last 2.5 years! There have been a few things I’ve down in my ownership like the clutch kit to a single mass one, brakes and oil changes / flushes. The cooling system had been replaced entirely by the last owner. This is the 5th car I have ever owned and while 200,000km motors sit on the market for $700 I’ve found my daily. This car has shown me day in day out what proper engineering leaves you with. A reliable investment! 😄 362,000km in the dash as of last night. Cheers Scotty - glad you made another e36 post!

Had a 1974 BMW 525, when I was in West Germany in the US Army, back in the early '80's. That was a great car. Cornered on rails. I imagine, that the straight 6 engine in that '94 325 is a direct descendant of the one in my car. It was a smooth runner.

Old BMW straight-6 cars were still relatively simple to work on. I had a '94 E34 model 540i as my first car, loved it, but it was a V8 and couldn't fix simple power steering stuff without lifting the motor. I loved the power of the V8 but envied the simplicity of the I-6.

Yep, I bought a 1999 BMW E36 328IC for $2k and the first thing I did was upgrade all the cooling system components since they are known for issues. I swapped all plastic parts to aftermarket stainless steel and aluminum parts. I have had zero trouble. I even swapped out my fading plastic headlights with glass headlights with the angel eys halo rings for safety. Older BMWs are very dependable as long as you maintain them and know what parts should be proactively upgraded.

I remember when car leasing first started the selling point was and still is, you can drive a new luxury car every 3 years. Reality of leasing is it sucks money out of your pocket so you can look like good driving a car you can't afford. It's better to buy a 2 or 3 year old luxury car.
@labornurse

I agree mostly, but if you can't afford it new. U may not be able to afford it used..i.e. out of warranty repairs and maintenance.
@mamadouaziza2536

Seriously, I just don't get why people lease.. Why would anyone pay $500+ a month for 3 years instead of buying an older version on the same car for less. At the end of the 3 year lease you won't have a car, but if you purchase used, you will have that car as yours after 3 years.
@mamadouaziza2536
@mamadouaziza2536 3 года назад
@@labornurse You can purchase a warranty for $2k that will last 3 years. I rather spend the $15k on a used car versus paying $500k a month for 3 years on a lease. At the end of the lease you have no car.

@emiliogalindo7521
@emiliogalindo7521 3 года назад
They are solid cars and the ride is incredible ive owned 2. The only thing I would highly suggest is save up the money and buy the mishimoto cooling system upgrade for these cars. The number one cause of blown headgaskets on these beautiful cars is the plastic water pump impeller going out or a slow leak on the plastic side baffles of the radiator or bottom of the reservoir blows out. These cars have aluminum heads so if they overheat any little bit they warp some people get rid of them because of this so when you go buy one have the owner run it for 30-45 minutes enough time for the cooling system to show any worrying signs.

The Sportage isn’t working for me with 3 small kids. By the way, when I got the Kia Sportage zero miles, at about 700 miles the transmission got stuck in the 4th gear. I don’t think I’ll ever think about buying or leasing one of those things again.

Scotty, I have a 90 325ci that my wife used to drive and when she wanted an SUV stopped driving it. They were well made back then and pretty fast for the day. Mine is the E30 body I think the one you have is the E36. The only thing I didn't like with those is the plastic headlight assembly. The reason it has the plastic rear window is because they made the top fold up into the hatch compartment so when it's down it's not exposed or visible. I just polish mine with some plastic polish for convertible windows and coat it with a special plastic window protectant and it does well. The biggest problem with the BMWs is the dash cracking but it's better than GM or Chryslers I've seen cracking when they are just a couple years old.
