My story about my experiences in Medical School and why I left at the end of 3rd year. Now that I have been out of medical school for four years, I discuss key lessons learned about pursuing medicine and when to consider a career change.
I hope this video can be helpful to both those looking into medicine and those considering a career change to provide perspective on your situation.
3 Things to Consider when Pursuing Med School:
1) Would I enjoy the work I would do as a Doctor?
2) I am willing to make the sacrifices necessary to meet the expectations of being a Doctor?
3) Do you have other career options or interests that fulfill your values?
3 Perspectives to have for your career:
1) Understand that you will be challenged in any profession (Challenges will help you grow)
2) Focus on having a positive attitude and what you can control in your situation
3) Make time to pursue hobbies and spend time with family and friends

11:01 Thank you for coming out with this video! I recently left my medical school last month. I was in the middle of my second year and had one didactic block left before studying for boards. However, I had the same logic as you. There was a lot of memorization required..I found myself not actually enjoying the clinical decision making aspect.. I enjoyed science because of the x y z pattern as well. People would tell me to hang in there and push through…be resilient they say.. but I feel like it’s important to take a step back and really ask oneself if this is worth it considering one’s values and what they want from a job. Only wish I reflected on this concept heavier as an undergrad :) Your advice for the years that follow leaving med school is also extremely helpful. Challenges will always exist in life but some are meant to help your future.

Thank you for your support and kind words. I imagine it must have been very difficult decision for you to leave medical school as well, but I'm glad that you did what's best for you. Wish you all the best in your new career!

Its nice you shared your perspective and your thought process. I think "pushing through" sometimes is necessary to be certain you are not letting go of something before you know if it is for you. Plus you didn't have the debt to worry about so giving it a bit more time to be sure wasn't racking up debt so why not keep going longer as you did. Great also for you when you decided that you are wanting something different. We need to try things to know what they are about. Glad you shared your story. I am sure others are having similar thoughts. Everything always looks clearer in hind sight so sharing your story with others about how you were feeling, dealing, and deciding what to do and now looking back you ca give critical advice to others about what you wish you did do different like not isolating is really "real." Got to respect someone who keeps it 100. You did edit out something that i wanted to hear but i understand if you felt you didnt want to keep it in. Good luck on your career and living your best life! 😊

I am so impressed with how you are able to share some of your experiences and your struggles . I'm sure it was difficult to sort of relive those struggles and to discuss them with us, complete strangers. I'm also sure that there are viewers who will take your advice to heart, and in that way, you will definitely help someone who may find themselves in the same situation as yourself. Best wishes in your future endeavors! ☮

I wholeheartedly agree with your takeaways…I would add that it’s not the challenges you face that make you a better person, but how you deal with them. As a military vet myself, the hardships you face are only as good as your ability to persevere…otherwise it just turns into bitterness and resentment. I appreciate your candidness on this subject. It also explains why you’re so articulate in your reactions (I’m one of the Rush fanatics 😁). Keep up the good work! You are obviously very conscientious and well-spoken. That’s why I subscribed. 😎

I have always wanted to be a doctor. That was my dream but my brain just like you, is into equations and X Y Z. I am more analytical than a memory machine but I manage to get A's in biology classes with more studying. So far I have an Associate degree in chemistry and a bachelor's in Biology I have decided to apply to PA school. The MCAT really sucks and from my online research, I don't see myself doing medical school. The amount of information and studying that you need to put in is 100% more than undergrad.

On the one hand I think your decision to leave medical school is foolish but all I am thinking of is the paycheck, I myself wouldn't survive one semester of med school, I barely made my Bachelor of arts and sciences undergrad, it whooped me, so I can't imagine how tough med school must be. You are doing what is right for you and you have a solid plan plus you can exercise your creativity so kudos; you do you and just keep moving forward, thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences, Cheers!

Hi, I went to med school. You should be very proud of yourself because you did chemical engineering and are as an engineer you are very smart! I didn’t even know how to study in med school so I completely understand. Even to this day I’m still like how do you do well in med school. It’s just a lot of information and test taking. Nothing else. And it’s definitely cliquish and a fraternity so I really didn’t like the toxicity. In practice everyone did things differently and I was so shocked because how can 5 different people have different answers to 1 patient problem. So I was like I didnt get it.

You need to be a skilled, independent, self-reliant learner. Do not "push through" and rely on memorization of large volumes of unrelated facts, learn the underlying story that makes the content interesting and explains the how and why everything is related. Medicine is extremely logical e.g. evidence based medicine, algorithms, and practice guidelines. The ACGME regulates resident work hours, the statements about work hours are incorrect. Save money, reduce debt, and go to public university and medical school; during your carreer, no one cares where you went to school. You can make personal connections with patients in 15 minutes; it is a learned skill. Residency training was one of the best times of my life: great adventures, great learning experiences, great friendships and I met my wife. Any job that pays at the same level will require a similar level of work, there is no free ride. Medicine has a huge range of practice options, you likely can find what you will enjoy doing. To be good, you need to feel and live medicine as a mission to improve the well-being of others.

Many thanks for the video - very kind of you. Curious to know what your are doing now - profession wise? And totally agree about giving yourself the time and space to have a personal life beside building new career. Very well done! Takes guts to quit medicine. Just make sure you use your brain to reach its full potential in your new career. Good Luck!!

Thank you for talking about this. I am in HPSP as well and am miserable in dental school. Would you mind giving me insight about what happens with the process and what life is like working the debt off to the military? You’re the only person I have seen who is going through what I am currently. I don’t want to be a quitter but the past 2 years were not good.
