I Left My 1976 SeaRay Rotting In My Yard For Two Years... Fixing My Mistakes (And Some Test Runs!)

That's right, after two long years, it's time for another episode of Dead Boat Garage. Given the growth in my channel, the chances of you having seen the last episode are incredibly low. The fact that my boat videos don't tend to garner the views that my classic Mopar videos do bring the odds even lower. But I spent an entire week this summer fixing my Chevy-powered 1976 SeaRay SR240HT, then "testing it" in local waters. I decided I might as well document these exploits for this latest episode, so I can pretend all of this was actually work. Anyway, we start today's episode with the boat in a sorry state, with the engine having spent quite a bit of time submerged in rain water and ice...

a "marine" starter is supposed to have provisions to reduce the possibility of producing a spark in the engine room as to not to ignite any fuel vapors that accumulate in the bilge. Same goes for the alternator and distributer. if you look at the distributer you will see a stainless mesh on the vent of the body same concept as the carburetor or MPI Spark arrestor as opposed to having an air filter element. Run your blower and inspect your bilge before you turn the key! love the boat content. I have a 1972 Century Arabian a 19' boat with a 440! Straight pipes.Nice

Merc cruiser tech late 80's. All correct and yes run blower for a few minutes before initial startup.. check blower vent pipes which typically rot over the years like breather tubes from 70's and 80's cars. Your intake vents appear to be underneath teak step trim near the rear and center exhaust at the rear. make sure they don't get obstructed as it's bilge vent when in motion. sold my Sorento in 2003 to a chap from Utah, i'm in Ga. this makes me want it back... Thanks for sharing!

Jamie, this video really brought back memories from my time living on a boat in northern Washington. My boat was slightly larger at 1150’ and 110,000 tons. It was also MUCH faster. Of course I’m talking about an aircraft carrier stationed in Everett. That area was one of the most beautiful on earth. I’ll watch every minute of content you produce dealing with your “perfect boat”. Thank you for the video.

Well, I watched it, the whole thing! Thanks muchly for the flashback Mr. Jamie! I had a late 70's vintage 21' hardtop with a 302 Mercruiser in the 90's, when I lived near Yellowknife. Relative to cars, they're a lot of work to upkeep, compared to the miles you actually cover, but in exchange they make great memories, especially for kids. My son enjoyed boating and it makes me happy to think about those times now. Keep an eye on your exhaust elbows, the big rubber interface between the manifold and transom, and also the flex bellows where the driveshaft passes through the transom. On an older boat (like mine was) the rubber can go hard and fail suddenly, causing the boat to take on water rapidly. And get that bilge pump fixed. ;-) A new one with in integral switch is cheap as beans, and you shouldn't have to take bilge off no one! The starter on my boat was an ongoing hassle, and it was in fact marinized. Compared to a stand Ford starter, it had an extra sealing plate behind the started drive. It wasn't completely air tight, but it was close. The alternator also had screen inside the case, I think so that a sudden flash couldn't occur.

Very enjoyable video. Dad bought a similar vintage, very neglected SeaRay open cabin cruiser in my youth. Hours and hours spent cleaning and fixing. My grandfather remade all of the teak trim. We went out a few times. Something always broke. Not much fun. In fact the evening he sold the boat something failed in the engine bay on the sea trial and the rear started filling with water. We had to flag down a passing boat and get towed back to the marina as darkness was setting in. Scary to 16 year old me. They quickly found the problem (don’t remember what it was) and the guy still bought the boat! Did I mention my dad is one hell of a salesman?!

See you in another 2 years! Looked like a lot of fun! Always loved boats but I learned my lesson about machines that constantly need upkeep-and I’m NOT mechanical-I can’t bang a nail straight. I always loved pinball and took the plunge on a good running Atari “Superman” machine. After 6 months some lights were flashing funny and a bumper wasn’t bumping. Just to get the guy to my house was $200 and after 2-3 hours work he got her running perfect again!-at a cost of $1,250 bucks (not many pinball repair guys left). I sold it shortly afterward for $1,000. Lesson learned and why I never owned a boat.

Do some research on winterizing your boat. It includes “fogging” the cylinders and filling the raw water circuits with coolant. It’s really easy. Btw, you need to do the same with the freshwater system (for any sinks and or showers on the boat) Also need to run with Stabil in the tank. Also, never pressure wash the topside, it forces water into places it shouldn’t be. Great you got her up and running!! Also that hardtop is awesome on a Sea Ray!

Old boat mechanic here. I started with Johnson/Evinrude outboards in the 1960's, then graduated to Mercruisers, attending the mechanics' schools at Auburn MA and East Brunswick NJ. Osco makes replacement manifolds and elbows for your motor, but if you have started it without water muffs, pull the crank-mounted water pump and replace the impellor. If the outdrive has never been off, you should check the gimbal bearing and u-joints and replace the drive seals. Drain the drive and fill with new gear oil. The volvos are twice the drives that the MCs are, primarily due to them holding twice as much oil.

I have doubts about the impeller’s structural integrity, *but* it continues to work just fine somehow. Zero cooling problems and obvious water movement. I have dry fired it multiple times without thinking about it. Awesome, good to know it’s in that crank mounted unit. I know I need to change the out drive oil. Will look at the other things you mentioned as well. Need to get tilt cylinders… both have nasty scores on the shafts. It’s becoming a minor ecological hazard. Thanks.

Funny, we used to get Volvo Penta Marine owners coming into our import parts store looking for parts because they were Volvo engines and there was some interchange between auto and marine (and auto was cheaper). I guess I'm a little sad they're using GM engines (and more sad that they're Chinese owned now). My Dad had a mid '60s 21 foot caddy cabin cruiser with dual Evinrude 75HP outboards. It spent a lot of time needing maintenance, but it took us on some fantastic cruises on Lake Mead in Nevada, and the Colorado river. Fishing, sightseeing, being annoying kids... I probably won't ever have one bigger than a fishing boat, if that, but those are wonderful memories. Worth watching even with the generic motors engine ;)

@@DeadDodgeGarage If I remember correctly the folks coming in were working on mid '70s and earlier boats. I worked in that store from maybe 1976 until 1986 (high school through college and a little beyond). They'd come in and tell us they needed parts for a 1960-something Volvo car model whatever with 'this' engine, and more often than not were able to use the parts they bought. I don't recall a Pinto crossover but they wouldn't have come to a foreign auto parts store for that if they knew it was a Pinto engine We caught on to the fact that while many parts worked, many did not and had to add a disclaimer on the paper invoices we used (computer? Hah!) noting that parts were not warrantied for marine and other non-automotive use. Like the guy who took an Austin Healey Sprite engine and homebuilt a generator using it, or the thrillseekers who built Bensen gyrocopters with air cooled VW beetle engines....

Old joke. If your mechanic buys a boat right after fixing your car you may have been overcharged. Just a joke guys, We love Jamie and now his family too. So glad to see you having some fun!

Captain Jamie. I always thought the boat was yard art.

Nice boat. That engine sounded pretty good when you fired it up considering it sat for a couple years. Did you add fresh gas or were you running on the 2+ year old juice?

Ancient gas… some of it even older than two years. Yeah, I’m great at stuff. I added some after the first day.

Well a lot of old Mopars are considered "boats" so this fits right in.

WRONG, we like boats too! A family member had a nice Sea Ray and traded it in for an "Egg Harbor", ooh fancy! We had fun with that too...
