You nailed the allure of saltwater fly fishing, especially the Costa Maya. I find it really hard to get excited about freshwater fishing (save using streamers) after going to the salt.
I don’t want to ruin my life either, which is why I’m not going permit fishing. But let me give you hope for the future. In 1974 when President Nixon signed the Clean Water Act, nearby Salt Creek was SO POLUTED, it was consistently thicker than a chocolate malt. In 2017 after returning from spending over three years teaching English overseas, I walked up to the water’s edge and noticed it was so clean and clear, you could see the bottom of the creek, as well as the foam line (which as a trout bum you know is the conveyor belt for food for fish). To date I’ve caught 13 creek chub using a popper dropper combo. The fish are now there in an environment where as a kid because of all the pollution, no fish could’ve possibly survived. This actually gives me hope for the future. Which is precisely why we need to focus more on saving the planet so these opportunities will be here for others and not just ourselves. 😇
