I totally get fasting for small periods of time, and do it myself for GI health reasons. However, when he started talking about fasting for more than 24 hrs at a time, I find that concerning. Especially the six day fast. That’s going to the other extreme, and also is unhealthy (and show me the data that says it’s perfectly healthy for any human not to eat for several days at a time…). I’m glad this man lost weight and is healthier now than before the fasting, but I still find it concerning. Clare, the silence when he said six days for him toward the end, seems like you felt that too. And you raise a very valid point about someonepossibly younger or already struggling with an ED will think that not eating is good. Maybe I’m wrong though.

As Daniel commented on the 6 day fast, anyone can take ANY situation to an extreme, like allowing themselves to become morbidly obese. Extended fasting isn't a game and should be done with knowledge and experience. But just because it could become a detriment to one person, doesn't mean that someone else should be discouraged from doing it to benefit them. When the body becomes fat adapted and is able to use stored fat as fuel, extended fasting can be very beneficial to loosing weight. Just sayin' :)

I can still wear clothes from my University days from 25 years ago due to diet and exercise. I avoid eating a lot of red meat, wheat, and alcohol. I'm not vegan or even vegetarian, but I eat a salad every day and my largest meal is supper or as the Yanks call it here, lunch time. Fasting doesn't work for a lot of people. If you are a women who needs iron and niacin, you have to eat something to keep your metabolism moving. Your metabolism stops when you stop eating. I respect what your guest is saying, but I would be guarded against this method for weight control. I'm glad Daniel has found a path to his goal, but I'm just giving a word of caution on this one.

Yeah, I tried it during the summer, since the 16 hour window might be conducive to people who can eat their breakfast or lunch at their desks, but not people who teach (when you have to be in class, you have to be in class). I found that I was losing the morning hours to lethargy, and eventually, I got an appointment with a gastroenterologist because, on top of something else, I was wondering if I had an ulcer (a lot of burning in my stomach). A few days after seeing him, went to see a friend in NYC, and ate things I normally don't eat, like fried food, spicy foods, and I was fine. That version of IF wasn't working for me, and I didn't really lose weight, anyhow. The 5:2 is more manageable for me, but like most things, I lost 5 lbs, then stalled

Congratulations Daniel !! I have been fasting for a year now and have lost 70 lbs(31.8 kilo). Lifestyle change has been the key. My eating window varies between 2-6 hours, but primarily doing OMAD on a low carb "diet". Don't be afraid of the word diet, it really only means, the foods that you are eating. Everyone has a "diet" of the foods that they eat, whether they are healthy foods or not. You can be on a diet of donuts and ice cream or a diet of meat and vegetables.
