I mentioned the building ledge in the comments on your video of the morphing apartment roof. Granted Fred was cheap one could make an argument the city forced him to make upgrades. Thus the nicer trim. We could also argue the ledge had broken off or wore away in places and he had to repair it. The drain pipe is still there

@@ricknineg coolness. Another huge blooper you may want to cover is in the episode "The Black Eye" Fred comes rushing back to the building after he realizes he signed his name instead of Ricky's to the card with the flowers. His hair is all askew and he has a flower in his lapel. After telling Ethel he is going to turn down the heat he heads out. Next scene shows him entering the Ricardo apartment. Not only is his hair neatly combed but he is missing the flower. Oops on continuity

Yeah but the building 's bricks are a complete different size. Earlier show bricks are much smaller. What did Fred tear down the whole building and re build it? Lol
@werewolfantipaladin
@werewolfantipaladin 5 лет назад
@@tammiemcwilliams4259 going with my theory, here in New England where I grew up, I remember commercials for a company called "New England Brick face" Essentially this company would come and redo the side of your house or business in a brick, stucco or stone like covering that looked real. One could infer Fred hired their services, the larger brick look was less expensive and now we have an explanation. I still think if our theories are correct or close to correct, Fred still had to shell out a lot of dough even by 1950s Manhattan standards to make the apartment up to code, which I have a suspicion it wasn't.

With severe upgrades spending money though possibly receiving a tax right off Fred would have to raise the rent then people would be saying the same thing hi g. Look at things the side of the landlord. He did let the Ricardo's go against the no pet claus. But other than ensnts not having a pet and wanting one could have protested. I didn't understand one thing Fred stated though. He said he turned his back when Little Ricky had pet gold fish...what was wrong with that? They don't make noise or a mess though considered pets what was the problem?

I feel people were too hard on Fred. At times he did seem cheap but there were times he wasn't. He did purchase a new washing machine for Ethel. He also did buy her a large box of candy for her (with Ricky) at the end of the chocolate factory episode even though both women fainted after eating all that chocolate. There were a number of other instances as well though I can not recall right now.

Desi Arnaz was a GENIUS & innovator on so many levels. Still not getting his fair share of "props". I 💝 Desi & Lucy 💕💕💕💕
@susieguglielmino4625
@susieguglielmino4625 4 года назад
Although this was not necessarily intentional, there are two important shifts Desi Arnaz playing Ricky Ricardo caused in American culture via his accent and speaking in Latin American Spanish. The first is that countless Spanish speaking viewers across the nation had for the first time a lead character with whom they could relate, and they did. The second is a bit more subtle since it was a running gag. This is the constant mockery and/or inability to understand what Ricky said in English. He endures this with patience and a sense of humor. However, the obvious reality is that Ricky (and Desi Arnaz) is bilingual, both idiomatically and formally enough to conduct business, while the other three never even tried to learn Spanish. They simply make fun of him. This is why Lucy is so lost in the episode when his mother comes to visit and she has no idea what is being said until he shows up and translates. The only word she gets is henna and the joke's on her because she'd lied about her hair color. One last thing, now that I think of it. I don't know if it was Desi's idea alone, I think he came up with it and the production team instantly liked it. But, boy, this really was a stroke of genius. The title. Most shows either had a generic title or, if the lead was well known, the title was The Star's Name Show. That's how fans referred to it. But by titling the show I Love Lucy, any time a fan said the title, they said I Love Lucy and that soon became true for them as well. Imagine the difference if it had been called The Adventures of Lucy And Ricky, or The Ricardos. Desi Arnaz deliberately left his own name out. Lucille Ball's subsequent shows without him had titles based on the original Lucy character as well as her real fame in her real name, but had nothing to do with any part of the first iteration other than her being a flake. The titles reflect that. The Lucy Show, Here's Lucy. Without Desi to play off, they were pretty formulaic, just like their titles.

Also Susie, because of tinting when they were still filming in black and white, ALL the characters hair could have been "henna" color at all! (you can thank Curly of the stooges for THAT one, nyuck, nyuck,...sorry, lol)

@@eloiseockert6561 I’m not sure what movie you are referring to Back in those days they were just recording just to use as a backup not for reruns Design was the first to use the three camera technique so they would get better shots of everything and would not have to do a scene as many times. They could get things in one take He also used a more expensive grade film so everything was better quality When He was negotiating they didn’t really care when He wanted the film they thought it was junk and that’s why most old tv shows were destroyed Paul Winchell wanted to buy his old show from metro media but after negotiations metro told him they were destroyed Paul thought metro did it on purpose but more likely the people in the archives just thought is was junk

It always got me that in one episode Fred asks where the cat burglar ran to and Lucy and Ethel said to the right of the front door, meaning back down the hallway. So Fred runs left. Funny as a gag but the way the apartment is laid out, he would've hit a wall, proved by this video with Lucy out on the ledge. The "brick wall" apartment could be just designed that way for small apartments and wood for the bigger apartments... Just a thought... Thanks for another informative video!

As far as the ledge blooper, what always jumped out at me was the difference in the brick sidings. Rick- another brick wall blooper you might want to check: In "Never Do Business With Friends" where the Mertzes buy the Ricardo's washing machine. 1- Watch inside the Mertz kitchen when Lucy wheels the baby in, the end wall on the outside balcony is all wood with a brick facade on the building. 2- when Lucy pushes the washing machine in front of Ethel's door, that end wall is now totally brick, like the facade, the wood wall has disappeared!

It is simple. Fred bought another building where they had a back door in the kitchen. The other has the building made of limestone blocks.

And of course the window was actually further away from the corner of building in the Superman episode, where that indentation is, is where the old window was in the older episode, so Fred would have had to have made major improvements to the building, adding a ledge, replacing the brick exterior, moving the window over a few feet, ect. Wouldn’t make sense, and George Reeves out on a ledge a few stories up? I don’t think he would have risked his life, in real life, like that either

lol great catch and I love catching these things as well....but going from small typical building with small bricks to now the large stone blocks would be an impossibility in terms of a building "upgrade." The angles of entry are so different on other episodes.

The Lucy Meets Superman episode is one of my all time favorites! Of ALL the actors who have portrayed Superman on the big or small screen, imho, George Reeves was the best! He was also the only Superman who I really believed could fly. Christopher Reeve floated away like a helium balloon. Even with today's CGI effects, what was accomplished back in the 1950's with springboards, wires, mattresses, and a body "pan" still holds up pretty well today.

The change is for several reasons: storyline called for the empty apartment, and the ledge had to support more weight, weight that was consentrated, and it had to be resistant to water. Maybe it was a stock Superman or exterior set, maybe on the back lot?

It's obvious Christopher Reeves utilized Superman's super speed to make a ledge on the other side knowing that when he shows up Lucy would've dressed up as him and went next door and climb through that window but hang out on the ledge and stay there until he had a chance to save her. He also noticed some improvements needed to be made on the outside so he made them for Fred free of charge. I'm surprised no one else realized this.

I wouldn't call this an episode blooper, it's more of them changing the set to fit each episode which they did throughout all 9 seasons of I Love Lucy. With I Love Lucy and other TV shows during those days they never had any consistency when it came to the sets, changing characters names, and rotating the same few actors into different characters throughout each episode. That same thing still happens in today's time with TV shows. Not as much but it still goes on.

I noticed that one, too. Another blooper for you is in the episode when then Ricardos give the Mertzes the washing machine. When it falls over the balcony, you can see the bottom of the washer like it bounced off the studio floor.

Oh my God nice find I would have never noticed the ledge or the bricks or the details you noticed !!! But Fred make renovations? Are you kidding me? He was such a miser and so cheap he wouldn't spend a dime to make renovations. Unless of course he had to because of damage Etc so who knows. Lol

These kind of bloopers are pretty common in older shows. I watch Hogans Heroes almost daily, so I know you will be making plenty of videos like this for that show. Thanks for the videos, they are very entertaining.

I noticed two bloopers that you may not have noticed. In the episode "Lucy's Last Birthday" Lucy tells Mrs. Trumbull that she always gets the hiccups when she cries ever since she was a little girl. However, in all other episode before and after this episode Lucy never gets the hiccups when she cries. In the episode "Ricky Minds The Baby" when Lucy is in the Mertz' apartment worriedly pacing she is wearing one style of shoe, but when she walks into her apartment to confront Ricky and Fred she is wearing a completely different style of shoe. Has anyone else noticed this? : ) Also, has anyone else noticed the HUGE time discrepancy in little Ricky's age? When the Ricardos are in California little Ricky is shown as being 2 years old, and while they are in California Lucy and Ricky celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary. However, When the Ricardos buy their house they are celebrating their 16th wedding anniversary and little Ricky is 5-6 years old! Wow! How can they explain little Ricky being 2 years old in California and 5-6 years old supposedly a year later. Talk about a boo-boo!!! Also, in the episodes when Ricky and Lucy are in Europe little Ricky celebrated what I assume was his 3rd birthday. Why were they so inconsistent with this???

That same episode "Lucy Cries Wolf" also shows the hallway outside the Ricardo's apartment where there is a big staircase about where the entrance to that vacant apartment would be. Fiction breeds creative license in TV Land!!! Thanks Rick!

Another great blooper video Rick my thought was there is no way Fred Mertz would do any type of upgrades to the building. I was surprised you did not mention Larry Mondelo's mom Madge Blake in the other apartment.....Hope to see more great videos on your channel.....Congratulation on over 36K

@paulk9985

Not only the ledge, but the size of the brick is totally different. Also, the living room window overlooks the street. The front of the building is totally flat (as we saw when Ricky bought the Pontiac and the cast spent a lot of time in the street). But in the Superman episode, the front of the building juts out in the direction of the street where the vacant apartment is. Also, on two episode, the hallway extended to the left of the front door, which would mean the hallway would go outside (the Madam X episode where Fred runs away with the bat, and The Sublease episode where Ethel walks along the hall from the left side of the front door). And another episode (actually the same episode where she lies on the exterior ledge) Lucy Cries Wolf, there is a staircase there. Lucy pouts and sits on the stairs when the thugs come down these stairs and take her to the basement. One might think that, with the popularity of the show, the continuity would be better with so many viewers and the possibility to notice these discrepancies. There are many, many discrepancies through the years.

The Superman ep blows apart the rumor that Lucille was TERRIFIED of birds. They were landing on her. Also...the baby chicks ep and the one that shows all of Little Ricky's pets. Lucy had no problem, obviously, with live birds.

Rick, thank you for this! Having the entire series on DVD, I’ve watched these episodes so many times and never caught this! I’m putting it down to lack of script continuity. Certainly, as miserly as Fred Mertz was, I cannot see him spending any money to make these changes willingly! BTW: where did you get the color photos of the Superman episodes? Has it been colorized and I missed it??

Did you know that back then they had easier ways to take sits down that was basically the same apartment you can bring in and take out walls and take out windows so that’s how they did it it was the same apartment

I also noticed the different appearance of the 2nd apartment's furniture and decoration. it was mixed with the tenant's before's furniture.....but made to be Lucy's. if u understand that. when they finished, and Ricky changed it, I had never seen the curtains b4 and everything was arranged and looked differently.

Ah….regarding reruns, you are wrong. They did in fact foresee the possibility of reruns. It was a true business genius of Dest Arnaz to insist on filming the episodes, rather than use kinescope. He saw the value in what they were creating, and wanted to profit from it. I think the ledge differences are simply a matter of different set designers. They didn’t use the ledge often, and when they needed it, they designed it to fit the story they were telling. It was never a constant. And though they did envision a future for the films they were making, they never expected people like you and me sitting there and dissecting every single episode looking for inconsistency.
@ravenpoe7093

“I Love Lucy” was a pioneer in television and all the consistencies are acceptable because no way anyone dreamed it would still be watched decades later. Desi may have had some inkling since he was one of first to have reruns as flashback episodes but still don’t think anyone dreamed it would be like it is today. Shows that came much later were more aware of what could happen to a popular show but still had a lot of inconsistencies and had plots that only worked for that one episode. But that given I have always noticed the inconsistency of the set and how the house layout was supposed to be (window and door placement compared to the outside etc)
@sheldonhartstein70
@sheldonhartstein70 5 лет назад
Something that bothers me is when a TV show uses an actual building for an exterior shot yet the layout of the interior set would not fit in that building. In “Tne Nanny” the kitchen was off to the right of the living room but that would have put it in the building next door. The inside in the house on “Golden Girls” does not match the dimensions of the real house.

There could not be another apartment where the ledge is extended because the Ricardo's kitchen was there with a window facing the same direction as the one in the living room. The second ledge sequence may have been filmed in another studio, using an existing exterior set from another project (hence, the different details), that would allow sprinklers to be used to simulate the rain and not mess up the interior sets of the Ricardo apartment.

The other interesting thing is that in the b/w episode, the pipe stops at the ledge. The color episode with Superman shows the drain pipe going through the ledge & continues down the wall. 😂

There is a website that specializes in TV crossovers and it links all the shows it possibly can together by these crossovers. Two such are I Love Lucy and The Adventures Of Superman - which is wrong, because even though in costume and only once (in an old rerun) identified by actor name, the 'Superman' who appeared here was actor George Reeves, not the 'actual' Man Of Steel. Even in Lucy's fictional universe, he was an actor playing a role. And now my mind is seeing Ricky as Jor-El, Lucy as Lara, and Little Ricky as Kal-El.

And also the brick size on the outside of the building is bigger and wider than the first episode mentioned.
