HUGE Blooper in Lucy's Kitchen?!--I'll Tell You How the 4th Wall Works and What happened!
The 4th Wall is something that every television show has implemented into it. It is essential to making it work and watchable. Now, at first glance, some may see this as a blooper. But upon deeper inspection, it is not necessarily one. But I threw in a little one for good measure at the end! Enjoy!

This is one of my favorite episodes. My favorite line is from Lucy when she is kneading that big mound of dough. She turns to Ethel and says in a joyful tone, “ It’s a happy little loaf, isn’t it??!!” 😂 My birthday is 10/15 which is of historic meaning to the show. I am 71, so I watched the very first episode. I did not notice the absence of the counter. I was too engrossed in the scene and the characters. I really enjoy your video research. Thank you. 😁👍🏼

Removing the counter is the only way the long loaf scene could have worked. I think they made the right call in doing so. It’s kind of like seeing through the fourth wall. Thanks for showing this, Rick.
@nunyabiznez6381
@nunyabiznez6381 4 года назад
The space between the counter and the oven was maybe 3 feet at most. To obtain the camera angle needed it was the only possible choice. Unlike today's cameras which you can put in your wallet, the video camera of 1952 was the size of a small car. And even if they could have the whole scene would have been distorted with an extreme fish-eye lens.

Usually in a car scene and you see the actor driving, the rear view mirror is usually NOT there. This is so you can see the actor better in the scene. Yep! To pull off that gag, they HAD to remove the counter. But, it would be more hilarious to think the "bread did it" LOL

@kjclark1963
@kjclark1963 5 лет назад
The "darkness" on the floor that you mention at 3:40 is not caused by the missing counter. That is the shadow of the loaf of bread. Notice the shadow is a straight line until you get to the oven door. The oven door is casting a wider shadow. This shadow is caused by a "key light" or "kicker light" that is above and behind the actors facing the camera. It's what makes the top of the loaf of bread stand out and shine so much.
@martythemartian99
@martythemartian99 4 года назад
Nah, it doesn't fit the other shadows in the scene but it does follow the line of the counter, so I'm with Rick

@@martythemartian99 kjclark1963 is right. If you compare the shot at 2:46 with the one at 3:26 you'll see the shadow is longer when more of the bread has come out. You can also search for the clip itself and watch it grow as the bread emerges.

Honestly, I would be more concerned with where they got a "timber saw" in their urban environment. I am one that would not consider their a blooper. Above all, the story and sight gags would be more important than the set pieces. Remember, there was no rewind or counter bar in the 1950s...their style of filming would be to create a focus on the actors and situation presented. Continuity is very much a modern thing. Lucy and Desi were truly pioneers the believe that a tv show, and individual episode, might someday be more than a "just in the moment" thing. I suspect lots of early TV people, who came from Film and Vaudeville background were of the mind that the term "show" was just that...an evenings performance. That is speculation, but it would explain why they were keen to let Lucy and Desi keep the rights. By the late-1960s and the 70s, reruns were common... you could see it all again next summer. By the 80s and 90s you could have them on tape. The Franchise as we know it...with fandoms, Trekkies and the like could now maintain their modern beliefs.

Watching this show is so much fun. As far as the "willing suspension of disbelief" goes, I've always felt there's "reality" and "Lucy reality." So, counter or no counter, who cares. Viewers still get to enjoy the ride! PS: Hallmark Channel, as of August 6, has eliminated "I Love Lucy" from its daily lineup. Very disappointed about this move. Would be interested in knowing how others who support this channel are coping. Could we change Hallmark's mind?

Great observation, that is what makes these shows classics. Today, everyone is separating real from imaginary. Even the new Lion King is not made to meet the joy of cartoon version because they are making it look as real as possible and that spoils it.

The counter is still there. The Fourth Wall position just changed. We (the viewer) are now seeing the events in the kitchen with the counter behind us. We're on the other side of it. Yeah, they're fudging the spacial relationship between the counter and the oven, to make more space for us to "fit", but it's the only way the gag would have worked with the established set. Honestly, in all my years of watching that episode, I never gave it a second thought. Thanks to your observations, I'm seeing things that never registered before. Keep 'em coming!

@im1who84u

I remember seeing this episode on television and laughing my ass off when that loaf of bread came out of the oven. Yes I realized at the time that long loaf of bread would not have fit in the oven, and I also realized it had no bread pan around it as it came out of the oven obviously either being pushed out by a person or it was spring loaded..... but like you say........ I gave them that "artistic" freedom and enjoyed the show. As a side note here. That episode was indeed filmed before a live studio audience and the bread was really bread, not a prop. It was less expensive to have a real loaf of bread made than it would have been to have a prop made. The Desilu studio commissioned a local bakery to make that real loaf of bread and after the show it was cut up and given to any audience member that wanted a piece of it to either eat there or take home. As for the "forth wall", even as a child I always thought it odd that when the people would go through a doorway to get into the adjoining room. Why didn't they just walk around the wall I wondered? But that's just me.

It is funny because I had noticed that counter was gone on different shows but never noticed it disappeared in the middle of this episode. For that reason I think they made the correct choice because the counter missing did not distract from the gag. I always wondered how the counter fit with the rest of the 4th wall. There is a design which implies it is free standing but they never went on the near side of the counter. Was is supposed to be connected to a wall that would have hidden the design? The counter top is also not flush with the visible side. I know ... I am over analyzing but I wondered this even when I was young. Just curious what their vision was. Thank you for another fun video.

How could I notice the counter was missing when I was laughing so hard at that huge loaf of bread 🍞 🤣 😂 I did know the bread 🍞 couldn't have all come out of that oven though. 😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆 🤣 😂 😹

Watching this episode as a grade school kid, I knew that the huge loaf of bread was MUCH larger than the oven could hold and so there couldn't be a back on the oven, it just made the story that much more ridiculous. Never thought of it as a blooper. I can remember watching I Love Lucy with my grandmother during summer vacations and by the end of many episodes the corner of her apron would be soaking wet from her tears of laughter. LOL

I think they did it right and like you, I never gave a thought to the counter missing. In fact 99 of your bloopers I never spotted and didn’t know they existed until you pointed them out. Now I look out for them 🙂

Technically it is breaking the 4th wall, which by the way is a theater term. Like you said, for the purpose of the story it is putting the audience BETWEEN the counter and the oven.

Wow great observation Rick. I'm sure they had to remove the counter in order to focus on the gigantic loaf of bread coming out of the oven. Either way, it's a great plot and very funny and entertaining.

I remember-but the Narrator made a mistake when he said 'Suspension of belief'-it supposed to be 'Suspension of DISbelief!'.Classic episode,though.

It's even more unbelievable that the HUGE loaf of bread came out of a much smaller oven shaped like a loaf of bread and obviously not in a bread pan.

Forget about the counter. I am still hung up on R9G saying it was a "windowless" apartment as I stare at the window above the stove.

Talking about the living room. Every apartment has some type of windows in some capacity

The next best thing to the real show is Rick’s outtakes. And now that the Hallmark channel put “I love Lucy” On hiatus, I will be living here for a bit. Hope you don’t charge rent. Lol

That counter set against the 4th wall so for that scene the counter disappears just like the 4th wall! Sure made it funnier being able to see the oven! :)

Rick? The counter was really supposed to be there but for the scene of the bread, the director may have had to give the audience an idea of what was going on and how ridiculously long the loaf of bread really was to get the full effect of that particular shot. Had the counter been there in the shot, the audience would leave it up to their imagination and wonder what was going on. I'm so glad that the younger generation such as yourself shows such appreciation for classic sitcoms. It benefits the appreciation for ourselves of what we watched as we grew up. Keep tourguiding us trips down memory lane! It keeps us young! ❤❤❤

The counter's presence destroys the illusion of a 4th wall because it highlights the disparity between "no wall" and a "half wall". If you accept the existence of a counter, you could say that (just for the oven scene) our viewpoint is from the other side of the counter. But the marks on the floor where the counter obviously used to be, destroy that impression. too. They were just trying to make a funny show and never imagined that people would be analyzing their work over 60 years later! But it's fun to think about it.

What I heard about the bread is they had to find a company that was willing make enough bread to push through the stove to this episode.
