Since Sophie Ashby is my favorite Interior Designer, I wanted to add that she actually majored in Art History and became an Interior Designer by chance. It comes natural to her to start with the Art when designing a space :)
That explains it. Loved listening to her husband and her explain how it “starts with art” in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JvF3ObT6Ads.html Really interesting convo with this creative couple.
she's not a designer by chance, actually the opposite. in a couple different interviews she says she's wanted to be a designer since she was very young. but certainly using art as a focal point makes so much sense given her academic education.
Thought I’d pitch in here and add that she did a summer course at Parsons School of Design in NY. She said she loved it and ended up working for two firms before setting up her own company (they’re very small and relatively unknown). You’ll actually find that a lot of London-based interior designers also studied History of Art! Many of them go on to do a conversion-style course (Diploma) either at KLC School of Design or Inchbald to help get their foot in the door.
For those of you that don't know, Sophie Ashby's partner/husband is Charlie Casely-Hayford who belongs to one of the most influential, Old Money, Black families in the UK. Their influence stretches back to around the 18th Century I believe - but really took off in the 1900s.
As a South African I thoroughly enjoyed this video and it made me laugh! Collecting art as if it's a live support system and then designing a room around it is typical South African of the older generation and academics. You can feel the hunger pangs but hey don't worry about not affording food, just look at that stunning painting. Another way is to hang precious art "where the light is right for the painting" That's how my mother ended up with an oil painting above the kitchen sink. Greetings from Cape town.
Love it! I’ve never had a problem putting artwork in a bathroom. Most bathrooms have an exhaust fan that will help with the humidity. Her husband is a clothing designer and I think he has a great influence on her design work. It is so much easier when you have a meeting of the minds when you’re decorating a home.
Pro framer here, her art collection is incredible, and all professionally framed. GET YOUR ART FRAMED! Also you can totally keep art in your bathroom if you frame it professionally.
I just picked up a pro-framed painting that I'd been waiting for for 8 months (not the framer's fault - supply chain!) and it is always so so worth it. Have also learned that if you have a standard size, you can order a custom mat and buy a ready made frame (in this case from the same framer).
@@agfhdl239 I ordered one from my local framing store and it was ready within a day or so. They let me pull down their ready made frames and test them against the the art, and together we found the right mat . In a few months I may upgrade the glass, which they also said they'd be happy to do. Local framers are heroes.
I’ve got two interior vid suggestions that you might enjoy: 1. Laura Jackson’s home on the ELLE UK channel 2. “Maisonette eingerichtet von Interior-Design-Profis | SWR Room Tour” (as you can probably tell, this one’s German, but it’s very unique and different from anything I’ve seen so far) lots of love to the (hungover) you ;*
I think this home is in Spitalfields, East London - a hipster part of the city. The fireplaces would be typical of houses in this area. With regard to IKEA wardrobes, you can get them spray painted in car body shops. If they are made of melamine, ensure that they are painted with shellac primer first, otherwise they will end up being a horrible mess! Gorgeous home.
We are drinking wine watching your video. You are cracking me up. Ghosting is done by unstable people who enjoy playing mind games. The Universe way of dodging you from a bullet. In other news..love the critique very interesting. Can't wait to see your next abode and what your create. Cheers!
I knew you would love it. I watched the H&G video a few days ago and have since re-watched it a few times. Her art is amazing, and she does an incredible job of mixing contemporary, traditional and eclectic styles, which isn't easy. This is way more interesting and creative than Paltrow and Musgrave on AD.
That place is truly incredible! Thanks for showing us! Also, always art in the bathroom! Maybe not a valuable prized possession, but art makes a bathroom more of a sanctuary.
Hey Paige, love these reaction videos! I’ve been wondering if you might do a video on how to arrange art on walls to look balanced? Would reaaally appreciate it (it’s so hard lol).
loved this house and your channel. one gets ghosted because as aiden said in satc they're just not that into you (and that's ok!).. the fact that this is your first time means that most people are super into you. you are amazing. thx!!
Omg completely agree. That show made me so mad when she would paint beautiful brick WHITE and beautiful wood BLACK and hang up the heaviest looking barn doors …how many 1930s Chicago two-flats did that woman destroy???
The gold artwork in the kitchen reminds me a lot of Victorian morning rooms where they would put gilded or foiled wallpaper in the room that got the morning light so that it would be reflected.
I think there are certain things you do when you have young kids that you wouldn't necessarily do otherwise - like have a sheep statue in your living room. Your kids live in your home too and some of the decor should be there to make them comfortable and happy. My sister has 2 leaf-shaped MCM stacking coffee tables she loves that are in storage bc they have sharp corners and bc her boys climb on them. They eventually will come back out but for now they have a cheaper and softer option.
Loved this! The playfulness and mix of patterns, art and colour reminds me of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant's old house, Charleston. I'd really love to see your reaction to that place, and what style tips or ideas you would take away from it. Also any other historical homes in general. ps. you should watch Interior Design Masters on the BBC (if you have it) - I think you'd enjoy the show if not all of the styling - would be interested to see your reaction to the different designers :-)
You should do a review of Alexandra Tolstoy's homes, she has two out and I'd be really interested to see what you think of the home she is renting currently and her design choices!
That house and her collection of artwork are so amazing. I am also so inspired for my current rental and all my future homes. Getting ghosted has no meaning. Don't think too much into it; it's not a you problem it's a them problem.
Love the house. 😊 I love when people how houses like this. I feel very at home in homes like this. But i would never feel calm in so many patterns and colors
This place is spectacular. She is very intentional with everything in her house, like her utilitarian objects are beautiful. Nothing is an eyesore. I too have recently been ghosted🤪.
You should check out Rita Konig's home and RU-vid video of how to layout a room. She offers such good advice to people who aren't professional designers and she also has great taste!
I concur, Paige. Sophie Ashby ranks #1 and Matilda Goad ranks #2 for me...love the personality and spaces of both ladies and definitely inspired. I also quite like Ashley Tisdale's space. I can't wait for your review.
I have some acrylic paintings on canvases in my bathroom and it's a good way to go if you're worried about humidity! Paper and old artwork could be an issue, but acrylic paintings on canvas especially if they're sealed should be no problem.
I want the world to know that you can stain brick rather than painting it. And retain historic hardwood windows! With a storm, they are 95% as efficient as replacements, which need to be discarded and replaced. (Figured this is a sympathetic audience for my soapbox.)
I'm for sure a more colorful decorator, I try to be lowkey with it but I just am gravitated towards it since I work as an illustrator and want my space to inspire my art that I make
I hope that Paige reads this and maybe, maybe will do a home review on his one. I recently watched Cordelia de Castellane’s home tour on Vogue and I bet Paige will love it. Cordelia is Dior’s home designer also Baby Dior and she is incredible. Paige, there is no way you wouldn’t appreciate it. Is vintage, supremely elegant, tasteful and Cordelia is a hell of a designer.
Do not ponder for one moment why you were ghosted! This has zero to do with you. And everything to do with the other person. You dodged a bullet. Thank your lucky stars. I enjoy your channel. You're hilariously authentic.
Ha ha, I feel validated. I painted my kitchen that same yellow color (perhaps not AS saturated) and I'm planning to paint my cabinets a green that's so dark that it almost looks black. (I have to paint the cabinets: the previous owner painted them w a cheap acrylic and the paint job is streaky and now starting to chip off.} It's a cheap temporary fix, but I think it'll work for now.
I just watched this one recently as well. Very cool! I took your suggestion to subscribe to "House and Garden" and a couple of other channels you suggested. Thank you! 😊
Love this and wish knew what was the brand and colors of paint. Recently thinking of what my next painting colors will be and noticed that in several rooms the ceiling was a different color which I had done many years ago. So I will do that again. I have never had a problem with art in my bathroom and no exhaust fan but a window. My bathroom and most of my apartment (rental) in the upper west side of Manhattan has not been ever renovated the building is 1905. The bathroom still has the claw food tub so art is so important to me the hide the flaws. We are lucky here in NYC that we have the thrift shops of Housing Works where one can get amazing art. Some are in the store or one can go on line through their auction bidding. Paige you should check it out and maybe put it as an suggestion for your audience. Feel better and carbs for me help a hangover. Pasta.
When I'm hungover I need some hair of the dog. Usually in the form of a Bloody Mary! Spot on assessment of this house tour IMHO. I love Sophie's style as well; especially her art collection. And I definitely love it more than Matilda Goad's. I like Matilda to a point. I just cannot with all the scallops. She's just a little too sweet and one note to me.
My new house is going to be a challenge. I have no walls for large art. The place is open concept so my living /family room has three walls. One will have the tv next to the corner fireplace, one has two windows and the third will likely have my midcentury bookcase as it's the only place to put it. I'll have to find smaller pieces to put on small parts of walls. I do love color tho.
Paige if you want an idea of a home to review - I just watched a video of a home tour called “Tour Melissa Joan Hart’s Unique Tennessee home” on the ‘TODAY’ channel on RU-vid. I really think you will enjoy it - it was a unique home design. Ok thanks.🌸
Greetings from Germany :-) Hello Paige, I would be very, very pleased if you would take a look at this home: I love the interior of this 1885 Art nouveau villa in Bremen/Germany. It belongs to a young teacher couple who inherited it and still restored and renovated it - so still unfinished, but the charm is already beautiful now. The words are in german, but the pictures are already enough for a review... maybe :-) Video title: “SO WOHNT...Miry | Paris inspirierte Gründerzeit Villa im Bremer Umland | Jelena Weber” on the YT-Channel "Jelena".
Oh, die Folge mag ich sehr! Sehr stilvoll eingerichtet.
I think you just need to move to London. All of the Victorian/Georgian homes we have rented have had a period stone/cast iron /marble fire places. I think you would be really surprised how easy it is to find a flat that had a lot of style to work with
I think you’re shocked at how unique and interesting her flat is because you’re from Chicago. (I am too). First, it’s a really young city. We just don’t have the kind of housing that they have in London, and second, the lack of oversight in Chicago means that all of the interesting stuff get torn down and yet another red ugly condo gets built.
