Fair play Chris. I've got total respect for you lads with RU-vid channels. Balls of pure steel showcasing your work the way you do. I'd like to think we can all take something from the videos and the comments to make improvements on the way we work, without being a total nob about it and entering into a bit of a discussion. Everyday is a school day for me I'll tell you that. Keep up the good work mate.

Watched your original video and was alarmed you hadn’t earthed the swa so much respect for admitting the mistake and putting it right. I’m sure most sparks have done something then thought afterwards that’s not quite right I know I have. I think your very brave to put your work on RU-vid for all the so called experts to criticise and nitpick. Always make me laugh how everyone talks a good job but I see very little evidence in the real world. I’d have to say from the videos I have seen of yours in general your work is of a very high standard I’m sure it’s a lot better than the vast majority of the so called sparks commenting on your videos. Keep up the good work and keep posting the videos. I’m sure a lot of people learning the trade find your videos very informative. You can only learn so much in the classroom.

Well done Chris lots of new sparkys looking at this will have learnt an important lesson. Yes your reputation is everything doing a job right is important. Even if you know the regs keeping checking them and reference against them and often going above and beyond is useful to ensure safety is priority number one. Well done great job.

Respect to you for listening to your conscience and putting things right at your own expense. My apprenticeship was 35 years ago now but I still remember it being beaten into me. Nail at the bottom of a cable clip. If the plastic breaks the cable can still rest on the nail.

Really like your videos. I'm not a sparky but I do love watching professionals. Nobody can ever say they don't make any mistakes, but the key is going back and sorting them out. I do wish there were more professionals out there like you. I've learnt more interesting stuff about wiring from you. Not just the theory but the practical "how it works" outside of a textbook. Especially in this day and age anyone can take the 3 day Part P and be an 'electrician'. People just won't get the practical experience from learning that way. It's crazy the amount of people that won't work out the proper fuse for a circuit either (so many 13A fuses in appliances that don't need it!)

This is why I like Chris, he is man enough to admit any mistakes and then correct them. Also man enough to put his work on show for people to pass judgment, whereas 99.9% of sparks don't.

Have a lot of respect for you for this mate, could of quite easily walked away from this job, takes a good tradesman to recognise it wasn’t up to scratch and come back and sort it out, especially when your posting it on RU-vid 👍🏻

Well done Chris, that’s the actions of a real tradesman. I know what it’s like to leave a job and on reflection you think of a better way of doing it. I’ve done it once and had to make up an excuse as to why I was altering the job and they couldn’t understand why they didn’t get a further invoice😂

I agree about the LED fittings as far as possible get the customer to supply them had too many faulty ones and sick of going back to replace them foc

Good to hear and see, in the Philippines there is no reputation, if you can twist wires together and tape them and it works you got a job. Mostly all wires are black with no markings, the American stile single wires through conduit.

That's the first time I've seen a spark clear up after themself 🤗 Decent video, mucho respect for what you did.

Wonder how hot a black shed would get in an Oklahoma August? Say 44-45°C outside and 60-70°C inside? Especially with unshaded southern exposure glass... somewhere between an oven and a greenhouse. Not remarking in British weather just the differences in building techniques in climates. I watch Australian channels and fascinate over the reversed seasons too.

Just asking a question, but the NYY cable is to be used where mechanical damage is not a risk, therefore how can you be certain it won't be mechanically damaged on an external shed wall? Thanks

Upmost respect to you Chris, theres plenty of armchair experts and keyboard warriors out there, and everything they 'would do' is always perfect, but doubt many would have the balls to record their daily work and publicly display it for the world to see and criticise ;-)

You gotta love it when someone is professional enough to say "it's better than the original install, and technically is OK, but I'm not happy leaving this" so they upgrade it to perfect (presumably at no extra cost)

With the black wire and cpc connected together in parallel, this will reduce the r2 value. On your certification did you use the r1+r2 with the black and cpc in parallel or did you test the cpc seperately to the black wire? Could testing with the cpc and black wire connected together hide a fault on the cpc when testing? Thank you for sharing your videos, seeing real world situations is helping with my education.

Not a complaint dude but just noticed a couple of points first when you gland into a weather proof enclosure you shouldn't really drill it you should bend the frying pan inside and connect your earth second was the masters ealing socket didn't notice an earth to the plastic box this should be done to the bottom earth connection as if the drain hole fails the water will actually touch the live connection first rendering the box live every day a school day bud we always learning

I’m no expert but would it not have been more cost effective to re-gland all the existing SWA and earth it as it was all cut to length already? Interested to know as good for my knowledge :)

All nice. Just can't understand one thing - for decades black was neutral in the UK. Why now the grey is neutral and black becomes an earth? I've seen many situations when electricians got confused because of that. Is this a regulation or just indiviual approach?

Just a tiny thing, why would you put the clips to the pendant upside down like that so you don't have the nail supporting instead of just the little bit of plastic on the clip?

MMM NO... I'm not sure about this!... "Finished project" I know it's only a job your asked to do but planning ahead is everything in this game and the customer hasn't done that here. Supply should be inside the building on proper small distro board. In my opinion Joiners will be upset at this because of ingress dampness, frost and aesthetics (wooden structure) and networkers will be upset at this because of AC interference on lines like internet, Wi-Fi and radio and me I think of maintenance issues in the future like.... using stainless steel screws outside, cat 6A cables, coaxial cables, things like speaker cables for 5.1 sound systems and ac points for outputs for dc led's as distance is critical for long lasting lighting and I haven't even mentioned a phone landline yet or a photo cell never mind 3 phase wind generators or solar panels !!!! hehehe great info and good work on your part though!.

what sort of supply do you have, if you have a PME supply then you cannot use the earth .The armour is earthed at the house end then insulated at the shed end ie the swa supply armour is earthed at supply end , use an earth rod for earth at shed end keep armour insulated at shed end , as it was. Bend the arm of the banjos up then bolt the earth to it saves making a hole in the water proof box and keeps it from corroding but all in all well bloody done you are a true tradesman, keep up the good work

When I hear people criticising work when they go to a job I say’ “were you here when this was installed” of course they say “no” I then proceed to tell them as you were not present you don’t know the restrictions that were in place at the time. Example Things may have been in the way when it was decided to go a particular route and the job had to be done now etc etc time constraints could also be a factor ( needs to be done today) there are many possible reasons . Good Electricians love to have time and space to create a work of art, but when need arises they have to create work that is safe and functional for its intended use but may not be destined for the Tate Gallery.

8:44 We learn here in Germany as electrican that the nail have to be below the cable for a better hold the weight. I wonder me all the time why do you not use the metal clamps for every hold?

What was the issue with the previous job, that the armour under a fault could become live and its assumed armour would be earthed?

Fair play for admitting it wasn’t “quite up to standard”. Plenty of other sparks who would’ve walked away from that and left it. But we all like to think when the next guy comes along he says good things about it, not the sharp inhale of breath before listing its faults.

Interesting about what you said regarding LAP LED lights. I've had two strip lights die in the shed after about a year.

Great job Chris, takes a proper man and a proper tradesman to go back and rectify. Those different brands of 2 gang back boxes and different accessories would bug the hell out of me, its better putting the cable clips going to the pendant the other way around so the cables cant be pulled out. I know everyone on youtube is an electrician but was just saying, so don't kill me lol.

Never used NYY before , I’m old school and always used armoured . Can you use it underground that’s not in ducting ?

Schneider do some metal T&E clips of the same form as the plastic ones you use there, just a bit quicker and cheaper than those D-clips (or w/e they're called) where you've got just one T&E.

Any reason you didn't use the black as switched line and put the brown into the central terminal, therefore remaining as a permanent line available for any alteration?

Ha use brass nuts and bolts on your swa banjo's. You can also get a Wiska earth bar so you don't have to drill loads of holes for your banjo bolts..😉

Still goes to show Chris you are above par. What I mean by that is if the previous electrician wouldn't have done the previous install you would have come along and whacked out a pukka fault free install without another sparky to come in after you question it, try to do little amendments and then have to say you know what and rip it all out. Good conscience there, you've even filmed the job going back, could have done that without filming and uploading. Thumbs up. P.S. Hows the plumbing work going is it drying up?

Don't forget to go back and weatherproof those cable holes with mastic. Up here in't north the rot would soon set in, but I guess darn sarf it would take a bit longer.

As a firefighter last pace I’d be if the shed was on fire would be inside it so premature collapse to protect firefighting actions isn’t too important from our point of view but good for you for doing it 😊

I am very sorry if I distrub you with this questions but "Why?" do you use before SWA british normed cable and *now* change it into NYY-J 3x2.5 EU normed earth cable? We use this cable only outside in the earth (> 60 cm deep, I prefer 1 m deep) normally. 100m box costs here around 0.75 till 0.78 € / meter. We not use SWA since end of the 70's in Germany. Why do the brit's now use more and more non-british stuff? Hager, DIN-Rail, Weidmüller, Knipex, Bosch? 😁 P.S. 👍 No. 205 for you! And again a good work! 😊

Is there only one locknut on the SWA banjo?

Take a look at Wiska 308 Boxes next time, you can get the earthing plates for them, much nicer to work with than drilling and bolting the banjo

Much better that the swa is now earthed however a few little observations 1 - The clipping to the light pendant is an abomination, nail of the clip always supports the cable, 3 extra clips and the cable straight would have been much neater, metal twin and earth clips are available. 2 - Just my OCD but the 2 sockets and spur with different brands and depth of boxes just upsets me. 3 - just because the regs state a maximum clipping distance, don't be shy to shorten the clipping distance. 4- intumescent sealant? Bit of black sealant would have been sufficient and no doubt would look neater. 5- you are 100% correct, LAP is rubbish Stay Safe.

Respect Sir for correcting the swa glands. Shows your professional and take pride in your installation work. Im did mention in the first video about the swa cables not being glanded. It was just advice from one spark to another 😊👍

Correct me if I'm wrong but does NYY cable fully comply with BS7671 ? I know SWA can be a right pain but it would at least be better protected and Earthed more robustly. Just my thoughts. I enjoy watching the videos.

Remember when I was an apprentice my gaffer would go bananas if I flipped a cable and put the nail at the top, not to mention straight or equal clip length, the wars we had! Omg, but it’s stuck with me now, drummed in to me, no one can clip a surface cable like me now 😂🤔

Not the best with the mix and match accessories next to each other and the switched fused spur that Doris will turn off by accident one day and wonders why the lights don’t work but I guess I’m a little picky like that.

Credit for revisiting and redoing your work. I was made to totally strip a cabling job out when I was an apprentice for using Tower/Hiatt clips with the pin above the cable,also a pyro installation with the screws above the pyro..Reason given,the pin/screw below helps support the cable ! And,I had to stay in my own time to do the work !The spark was ruthless but,the best spark I ever worked under.

Was the insulation on that live cable in the CU split open?

Nice one chris ! 👍🏼 takes alot to go back and tell the customer for what you need to do. Good practice to connect lose cables to earth, this is important on hazardous sites not so much domestic. It could had been connected to permanent feed ready for a future light and made safe at the pendant (connected in the loop), may make it even easier if you had to install another light 🙂

Wiska make an earth linking kit for the 3” square box and larger comes with a screw terminal for a earth connection.
