Rosacea: I’ve been living with something like this for 20 years. It started when I was living in Asia and some people suggest SPICY curry can trigger it. I don’t know the truth of this, but I had eaten a Thai curry so hot it made my eyes water not long before. I keep my skin clear using Nizoral shampoo twice a week. Trick is don’t scrub - just rinse your face - or you’ll destroy your skin’s natural oils and flora. If your condition is anything like mine, I found that moisturisers made my skin worse. I think it’s anything with oils. Or scented stuff. Good luck, hope you find a management routine that works for you.

Great episode and a difficult category to delineate and navigate successfully. Well done to reduce it down to only five and was stoked with Oban as your top pick.

Oban is no.1 for me, too, but you gotta try more from Scapa. Top 3 for me. And, of course , Clynelish should be here. For me, it's: Oban Clynelish Scapa Old Pulteney Talisker

I love Clynelish 14 for it's coastal elements. It's been especially good value in Europe, often available for around 40 Euros.

Totally agree! Clynelish is great although there's not much of a core range. In my place you can buy easily 4 or 5 bottles of Clynelish 14 (u$a 45) for the price of one Oban 14(u$a+/- 160-200).

Loved this video G! I usually shy away from NAS but the Oban Little Bay is wonderful especially for the price which is sometimes half the 14. Slightly different but still having the distinct Oban signature style. (Do love the 14 though!) Neal

Hi Geoff, good selection, the only one of those I haven't tried is Ardna, and the truth is that like you I have a special taste for Oban, the 14 was the only one I had tried until I found the Little Bay, and I took it almost blindly, well not so blindly thanks to your two reviews of it. Thanks and Cheers. P.S: get well soon 💪

Hey Geoff don’t worry about the rosacea, I have it too, the flare ups suck but it used to worry me way more than it does nowadays, I’ve just learnt to accept it now. Great video, I still have yet to try an Ardnamurchan and now I really feel like I’m missing out. Absolutely love the Ledaigs though! And I think I saw a rum finished Lagg a while back which I really wish I had tried. Cheers! 🥃

Great video again, i hope your face will get better soon. I find Old Pulteney has a real coastal style in the whole line which makes the brand a coastal one. I think Clynelish is missing. Perhaps the 14 is kind of coastal but certainly IB's and special releases are more coastal. I have the Distillery only from a couple of years ago which has some nice maritiem notes.

I love this style as well, Talisker and Oban being personal favorites of mine. Unfortunately, as you mentioned, the prices of both of those now are reaching obscene levels. I've come to like the Pulteney 12, which is dirt cheap in Germany, when the mood is for something light. Need to try Huddart and 15.. Sadly I'm kind of irritated by the paprika potato chip note in Talisker, but I haven't tried pricier releases. My go to coastal right now is actually Rock Oyster 10, which find to be a really well done blend, but my fave is probably a Caol Ila bottling with a coastal emphasis, such as a 12 year old Signatory from some years ago (way better than and different from the current OB).

Tough to narrow down this kind of list, as you mentioned, so I commend your effort to give it a go. Let's see... Oban. I've only had the 14, but I find it unequivocally subtle and several light years away from complex. Could be me the two times I tried if from the same bottle, or maybe it was just a flat bottle (not mine), but the 14 is mostly meh material for me. The Ardmanurchan Cask Strength AD/02.22 hit it out of the park on first sip. Pure joy! Lovely. I just picked up the Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch 7 & Batch 8. I fell hard and fast in love with Batch 6--to me, this is soul-stirring stuff. I SO look forward to opening 7 & 8. Which batch were you enjoying at the end of this video? Any thoughts on the different batches?
@Gwhisky
@Gwhisky 8 месяцев назад
Big fan of Oban 14, myself, but it's definitely a divisive one. As for the KK Heavily Peated, I'd only ever had batch 3 before I tried this one, which I didn't love. The one I'm working on right now is batch 8, and it's fantastic. I'm sure you'll love it! 🥃

I agree with Oban. Saltiest whisky I’ve ever had. Id include Kilkerran 12 as a coastal mineraly malt. Then again it’s the earlier bottlings I’m referring to, so not sure if the latest ones are as coastal. I’ve heard they’re sweeter than the early bottles. Back to Oban, the 14 is relatively overpriced. I truly enjoy it though. Once a year it’s worth buying one.
@Gwhisky
@Gwhisky 8 месяцев назад
Yeah the 14 is crazy overpriced in some places. I'm lucky it's still quite affordable here in Taiwan, so like you I come back to it every now and then. As for Kilkerrans, I don't know if they're any more or less saltier, but personally I prefer the newer batches. Cheers Salty. 🥃

I just bought the old bottle Talisker 10. Paid 95 out the door, which is only justifiable bc it’s the older version and not the new one. Talisker would be my favorite distillery is they just did things the right way. I could rant for 10 minutes about them and Highland Park. If HP and Tal made their 18’s at 48% NCF they would break the internet/whiskytube and it would never sit on a shelf a day in its life. Instead I’ll never buy either again until they change. That being said, maybe not bc HP CS mixed w the 18 is f’ing fantastic lol end rant

Not a big fan of oban. Surprised to see it here. But it could be my experience was never great. I did enjoy the 18 yr old i got, thats the only oban bottle i ever bought..ive tried the 14 yr and some others and wasn't impressed but of course i don't consider my experience with any whisky to be a "totally fair shake" unless i actually can own a bottle and spend time with it. I didn't really find it to have any stand out coastal notes. That's for sure. Btw is caol ila not coastal?
@Gwhisky
@Gwhisky 8 месяцев назад
Caol Ila is absolutely coastal, as is Ardbeg, Laga, etc. Note that I omitted Islay from the list as it would basically just take over the whole vid. As for Oban, it's take it or leave it as a profile, but it is profoundly coastal and salty. They're pricey, but the Diageo SR releases really showcase the brand at its finest. However, they're pricey, so if you've not had a good experience with the brand so far I'd recommend sampling before you buy. Cheers. 🥃

@@Gwhisky i think I'll have to find one that's a high proof. I think my problem is all the obans ive tried is 43% or 40%, i definitely didn't get coastal and salty..no maritime notes or salty ocean spray like i get with talisker and caol ila(i did forget what u said about islay as i wrote my comment). At such low proofs i find oban a bit boring. What does oban release at a higher proof? I'll see if I can find a store that has it and will let me sample it.
