I literally cannot get over the fact she went on all those holidays for just £4,000 including the states. It cost me almost £1500 just to fly to SF to see family over Christmas 😬😬 Or the fact all that shopping cost her just £25. This whole programme has just made me realise how bad inflation has actually gotten. Those of us in our 20's and under have just been so fucked over.

Worst statement from a male psychologist “her husband is who he is, and she needs to learn to accept that. She needs to learn how to communicate her needs, even if no one is listening”. Absolute rubbish!! Her husband needs to learn to communicate just as much. Period. My parents don’t communicate, never have, and now, in their 70’s, my mother absolutely hates him. He shows no emotion so none of us know how he feels about that. She is desperate to leave, but can’t afford it. We’ve been telling her for at least 50 yrs to leave him. She stayed for his pay check. It’s very sad, but it’s also very sad to hear this “dr” say, “he is who he is”. He’ll end up divorced if she starts taking good enough care of herself.

I disagree, surely you know what your partner is like before you marry them. You can't expect them to change. You either accept them for who they are or leave, but remember you chose to marry that person for certain qualities. Stop focusing on the negative and look at the positive. If the negatives outweigh the positives then it's time to make some drastic decisions.
@rosshamilton1394

If you want to marry someone to change them, you think wrongly. Your potential partners will have their baggage no matter what, and it's up to you whether you want to accept some of it, all of it or none of it. That is why you keep looking and use your judgment.

I don't see any real motivation for Adeline to change. She said her husband doesn't care what she buys, and that she can even quit work if she wants. Her father's expectations aren't going to change, and saving money isn't going to impress him if he wants her to earn more, not save more. Her friends are spenders just like she is, and the whole cast of characters has enabled and encouraged her to spend recklessly, because that is what they all do, pretty much. She is one of those who can find that her life is upside down over night. She could be a widow tomorrow. Money seems to flow in the streets in her life, and they probably just want to keep her happy, since she has no real contribution. Which is the basic problem. She is like the house cat. And she knows it. She married someone like dear old Dad, neither of which see her as valuable in their own judgment. That will not change. Cold business men are just that. She has her friends and her cat, and that is who she has. And her shoes. She needs to find an outlet to go take care of others, and find her value in that way. She could do volunteer work with the homeless, in soup kitchens, or any number of important outlets. Then she will find that people appreciate what she does out side of the narrow views of her husband and father.

I think it comes down to her wanting to learn how to stand on her own two feet, and be able to take care of herself. You're right, though; she's not in the desperate circumstances that a lot of the other people that Jay and Benjamin help are in, at least not when she did the show.

To be fair he did respond very well to the external advice given. I am a female who has difficulty with emotions and can relate very much to his personality. I’ve learned a lot by listening to others and from my very patient partner. But seeming unemotional doesn’t mean a person isn’t absolutely, completely human. Expressing things is extremely difficult for some people even though they are constantly analyzing, thinking, and responding to things within themselves.

I just want to say that especially with shoes "designer" names mean nothing in terms of quality. Look for a shoe store that cares more about the shape of your foot, your insole and can talk about the parts of the shoe and match fit so that you are comfortable. I have bought many popular brands and they don't last very long. But on the same note buying the cheapest shoes you can find is a bad idea too because they are horribly uncomfortable and fall apart. Mainly I look for good deals on quality items. Leather is a great shoe material vs plastic.

@Mo Shirazi Your original comment was different. Ofcourse she's also responsible. But he's ALWAYS working. That creates an unhealthy relationship. When people, children too, are being neglected for a longer period, it has a negative impact on them. When this man would be a woman the result would be the same. A male partner wouldn't become addicted to buying clothing to fill the hole inside, but he would, for example, start drinking too much alcohol. When the neglecting partner doesn't change, the only option for change is a divorce. Because children don't have a choice they have to stay in a neglectful situation for 18 years. They'll hardly have self-respect, self-worth and self-confidence. They need good therapy to still create those. Otherwise they'll also choose wrong things in life to try and ease the pain.

I try to buy quality shoes but I only have a few pairs. I have two pairs of high quality winter boots, two pairs of teva sandals, three pairs of slippers (floors in my house are COLD) and an old pair of sneakers. For clothing I depend on thrift stores or poshmark.

This makes me think about my own life.. I see the numbers she spends on things and it doesn't sound that bad to me (the 17,000 pounds of debt notwithstanding). She took all those vacations and never eclipsed 4,000? I'd do that with one trip to California. Her weekly budget is not even enough to fill my car gas tank for a full week. I've also tried making a packed lunch and I've concluded that I dont actually spend less buying the components to make my lunch than I do if I buy my lunch. This austerity plan is a good one to have her climb out of debt, but I'd suggest its a horrible one if one is supposed to "live".. A life lived on bread and water alone is not much of a life, tho admittedly there are increasing numbers of people these days that seem to have this very struggle each and every day. I'm with this on the excess shoes and trips... but that is also from a guys perspective.. I just dont understand the female obsession with shoes so I have a bias there. If she can suffer for a spell to work off the debt and find some better balance.. I think she's okay.
