Instead of coming up with ways to tell him to get over it why dont they tell the public that its not right to disrespect someone because of their looks. its really a shame , so many foreigners look up to their country , their culture and are fascinated by it yet things like this still happen ITS 2017 PEOPLE WAKE UP

Gavin Gallagher Because unfortunately they would be wasting their breath. Koreans' racism and discrimination stems from deeeeeeepppp rooted self hate. Why do you think they have so much plastic surgery and skin lightener to "look white" or western (even though there's still a lot of cases of koreans discriminating against white people which shocked me). The close minded Koreans aren't gonna listen to someone on a screen telling them to change their mindset. They're gonna have to do that themselves, and put themselves in a position where they are seen as a foreigner, and think about how they would want to be treated. I'm sure the hosts know this which is why they try to give the boy advice instead. Alot of people misunderstand the hosts but realistically they're just tryna help. But there's not much you can do in these situations. Trying to talk to a racist or ignorant person in general is like talking to a brick wall, basically a waste of time.

Gavin Gallagher white washing most korean idols isn’t even a thing tho. 99.8% of koreans are just as white as the whites people are. they may have a more yellowish tone to them, but they have the same color skin as white people and it’s even been proven. there are some darker skinned koreans don’t get me wrong and the white washing on them is wrong, but for most idols not the case
@xSunnyDaysx
@xSunnyDaysx 6 лет назад
hayun even though i haven’t been to Korea; i don’t believe 99.8% have a ‘white’ skin. I know what you are trying to say. Not tanned is the word you are looking for. Only the people who are on tv are pale or made pale. Most of the people are more yellow-beige. Just like in India; allot of celebrities are chosen because of their light skinned skin. The people you see on Korean tv hardly represent the masses. Koreans also have big/bulky noses and round faces.

Like in another video where they where talking about plastic surgery and 90% of the comments where saying that they should just love themself instead of getting plastic surgery, like is their life if they want ps then let them, why do they have to be discriminated aginst because of getting plastic surgery what matter is their personality.(sorry, i change the topic)

Its kinda sad how being called "filipino" is considered and insult, which is evident in his case. Just because a race is not as advanced and has a naturally (beautiful) dark skin tone does not make them any less human. Filipinos generally has a positive attitude towards the Koreans ( thanks to K-pop, K-dramas, advanced technology, etc.) and all and yet Filipinos has a negative connotation in Korea (to some, not all). Instead of telling the guy to embrace and accept himself, they should educate the viewers not to judge other people (and race) based off their skin colour/ appearance.

I was teaching English in a school for Koreans years ago. Korean students in there look down on Filipino teachers because "they are poor, not educated, etc.". The kid I was teaching would not want to listen to my discussion of the lesson because she thinks I'm poor and unschooled. I told her that if her assumptions were true, I wouldn't be teaching her elementary English for kindergarten to her who was already 16 at that time and she could not even construct a simple sentence with subject-verb agreement . They got their racist impressions from their parents who think Filipinos are lesser in "human value". I don't know if they are stupid or ignorant ---why would they send their kids to the Philippines for education if they think FIlipinos are "poor" and are "not smart"? I call that STUPIDITY caused by RACISM. And the worst of all, they have the guts to display their racism in our own country. I call that bad manners and bad conduct and that is the mark of being "unschooled" or "unlettered".

The issue is the fact that Korea's ethnically homogeneous society leads to close-mindedness and complete ignorance. It's disgusting seeing how they treat those who are the least bit different from them and it really needs to change, and if you're from the US trying to say that we have it just as bad here, you are wrong i can tell you that, we may have racism but that's from certain *disagreeable groups of people* not from our entire population as a whole.

Jewels Lightbourne It only makes sense that it would be more uptight in Korea, if you only look at the history of a few decades back. Not to mention, tourism didn't even start there until 2010. And I'm getting tired of all these foreigners talking about Korea from getting info off the internet and generalizing and assuming to fill in the holes. Yall can't talk unless you've at least lived in Korea for a year, can understand a little bit of the language and have at least done some research about the geography, history. And educate yourselves on basic levels of psychology and sociology. Otherwise, these international "fans" just sound like ignorant bigots.
@jewelslightbourne7517
@jewelslightbourne7517 6 лет назад
Sara H. I can agree with that, I, myself is a international fan but that man or woman was just straight up rude. I do agree that Korea is uptight no doubt but it's still weird to see it still in 2018, I mean there must not be enough foreigners In Korea because of their reaction to this guy and how they treated him different.
@Imokayluv
@Imokayluv 6 лет назад
Jewels Lightbourne Here's my advice. Never assume anything if you haven't been there to experience what it's actually like yourself. You don't know how many foreigners Koreans see in their daily lives, if it's a lot or if it's barely any at all. I went to Korea a few summers ago, and I didn't see any foreigners in the month I was there unless I visited a university or a tourist place. It's still not a normal occurrence. I'm tired of everyone assuming every country to be the same, pulling up the "it's 2017/2018, it should be like this," No country is going to be the same. Stop being ignorant, (and I'm not saying this to you, I'm just saying for everyone in general)

i’ve visited Korea recently and i can say that not all koreans are like that. most koreans that i’ve encountered were welcoming. I have a little sister and everywhere she goes, locals always compliment her looks and always greet us with a smile. Sure some may not be that welcoming to foreigners (although i haven’t really encountered specific events of being discriminated) but every country has their own down side, right? But of course I don’t know a lot because i’ve only visited one part of korea which is seoul so i cant really say that it applies to everywhere in korea because i haven’t roam around much yet hehe. Anyway, i hope those racist people will mature up though and just spread love bc 2018 yo

But with young koreans, (around 20 -30 or childrens) they are quite open minded, even thought some of them are still racist. Oh and also since i've seen this in the comment. Ant Man Are you Korean? Maybe you can explain me a couple of things. Cause I have met lots of Koreans in my university during their exchange semesters and they avoid talking to foreigners... they stick with their own people. It is impossible to have conversations for more than 5 minutes, let alone being friends. And I do want to specify that they speak good English and they are not shy at all. They can be pretty racists with their comments against Chinese people... I asked one of them and he said "we do not trust foreigners", and "they are too different from us, we do not want to be friends with non-Koreans". How can you be friends with people like these?
@citroun
@citroun 7 лет назад
please don't generalize.. it is true that a lot of koreans seem to be close-minded in that way, but i think in recent generations, (forgive me if my wording is wrong or doesn't really make sense. i will try to explain myself again if so) younger koreans are more open-minded and accepting. just like any other kid, they don't really care about ethnicity and such. my school has many exchange students from korea, japan and such and a lot of them are very friendly and easy to befriend! some of them may be shy at first but they get talkative once you approach them, and some even approach first also~ in fact, there is an indian boy at my school who is best friends with almost all of the koreans in my year, we call him like an 'ambassador', it's quite funny hahhaha because when the koreans all go out in a gang, there's always one random indian guy in that photo which is him hehe but anyway, my point is, korea may still have a long way to go when it comes to this subject but i think they are slowly improving nonetheless

Jasmine Johnson I can understand that the UK has more diverse and multicultural people. However, as an asian and as a Korean, I did experience discrimination and prejudice. Some people literally shouted Chinese!! and some shouted nihao to our family and laughed as they went. (and ofc they didn't say it in a friendly way, it would've been fine if they were trying to ne nice and communicate with us but that was not the case) Since I lived here for over 3 years now I have friends and I'm alright with school. BUT the first year was very hard for me. I was put into a group of girls who were friends and at first they showed me around the school and were quite nice to me. But after that, there were times when they ran away from me while I tried to catch up which I eventually didn't as I thought I'd look stupid to follow people who wants to get rid of me lol. Also, some guys threw paper balls at me in a cover lesson where teachers didn't rlly care about us. There was this guy who shouted at me when I was walking so I didn't rlly pay attention, and he laughed with his friends and said ahahah she can't even understand. I don't even go to a rough school. I go to a private catholic school. Maybe it's because there's only 2 asians in our year. Maybe. But then my friend went to NewYork and apparently there were loads of asians in her school. What happened there was even more terrifying. She changed school after a year since she couldn't stand it. That's what happened to my younger brother too. He went to the same school as me but since no one wanted to be friends with him his 1 year of this school is a horrible memory to him. Especially after moving from your hometown in Korea where you have friends and everything, your self esteem gets fucked and your life gets depressing.
@soph9501
@soph9501 7 лет назад
Jasmine Johnson I cried everyday wishing I hadn't come to England. I still go to the same school. I tried my best to fit in and now I'm yr 12 and my school life isn't as bad as before. If you meet the people from our school they will be nice and lovely.However, they were horrible and racist towards me and my brother. This Korean girl I know who's the same age as my brother had the worst time of her life at the state school she goes to in the first 2 years. It's not just my school. Now I'm perfectly fine with english people but I want to say it's not a non racist country. What I learned in England is that, most asians who experience being bullied and discriminated don't usually make a video like other people on youtube saying sth like 'I got discriminated by....' which probably makes it seem less in the Uk. I'm sorry to say this but when I read your comment I felt like you think the Uk is such a beautiful country compared to other countries. I lived in Korea too and I think the amount of racism is the same if not less in Korea. I do like to say that I don't hate the Uk. They're so weird like i can't find a single reason for someone to be criticized just because they are mixed-race or a total foreigner. For us, i dunno but we are like amazed when we'll be able to meet somwan who's like that. We find them cool because they are rare. Gosh korea i dunno for u

Damn... I mean, I understand. I'm Mexican and my sisters and I get mistaken as Asian every single time. When they see our name combined with how we look, they assume we're Filipino. LOL someone mistaken one of my sisters as Japanese and started speaking to her in Japanese and there was this guy who thought I was Korean 😂 It doesn't hurt us, we actually just laugh about it. We weren't bullied because of it. If anything, we were treated just like anyone. If anyone does go up to us and ask if we're Asian, we usually just laugh and deny it so we don't take it personally since we assume they are just curious. But I can imagine how tough it would be for him ): After a point, especially since he was bullied for it, in very sure he is now sick of it. If their reaction was different and more positive instead, I'm sure looking foreign wouldn't be such a big deal to him. But he's been receiving the wrong end of the stick so I can see why he's upset. They way that some of the Koreans treat him is bad. Why judge someone that looks different. But it would also help him if he himself loved himself as much as I'm sure his grandparents love him. Once he loves and respects himself fully, it's possible that he'll see the world in a whole different light. We can only hope judgmental citizens that see this also learn from these episodes that deal with judging people like this based on how they look.

A lot of people are saying that they can't believe that the panel is insisting HE accepts himself and HE tries to overcome the discrimination and I can totally see why people are saying that to some point I agree. However, they are Korean and they know how Koreans are, them telling others not to discriminate or not to judge people by their looks would fall on deaf ears so instead they tell the man to somewhat change his attitude and look at the positive side of it, because all in all, you can only change yourself and your attitude towards life, unfortunately you can't change others thinking no matter how hard you try. They have to WANT to change. Another thing, they need to be more honest, it's not JUST cause he looks like a foreigner, it's because he looks like the WRONG kind of foreigner for Koreans (southeast Asian, India, Mexican). I guarantee you, if he looked like the RIGHT kind of foreigner (white western English-speaker) it would be totally different. Oh he would still stand out, but, I'm telling you, he would get all kinds of praise and free drinks and food , guys wanting to hang out with him, girls wanting to be with him. It's sickening.

It is contradictory to criticize racism in Korea and distort the appearance of Koreans as plastic. You too are racist against Koreans.

who are you talking to?. After all, Koreans do more plastic surgery than other countries. (where's the racist?). you guys are racist because of your "pure korean" idealism. in the video it is clear that everything is racist, even when reacting to the child of this person (who "looks like" Southeast Asia), looks the child not the same as his father. they don't realize they are racist, you korean people are so pathetic.

Ive noticed after watching a several episodes of this show with similar problems about looks or because the person looks like a foreigner. the councilors hardly ever say it's a problem. They tell the person to basically get over it or it's the part of life. I saw an episode about a foreigner saying people thought because of his skin he's dirty. They didn't think this was a problem at all despite that his many examples. even Sam okeyre said he experienced this. the older councilors never think this is a problem in korea. with thoughts like that this problem will continue. I'm not saying all of Korea is like this but I think as a show that suppose to help people that live in korea, should promote equality and any problem that says that it doesn't show just that should be something to worry about. glossing over it is not the answer.

Cecelia Thurston you said exactly what I wanted to say. And an episode that really upset me was one of the recent ones with the guy that was from North Korea. The things he went through were so horrible. It's sad that after escaping North Korea he had more sufferings waiting from ignorant evil-minded people. In the end I felt like there was no true understanding or empathy from the panel about what he went and goes through. It's never really telling the viewers, hey stop doing this to people. It's usually telling the victim, "well maybe you can change your clothes or hair or the way you act or speak so people will accept you. You must be the one doing something to always get this type of negative attention". I think things will change sooner than later since Korea is being more exposed to the world. They're going to get more outside pressure not to discriminate, and get really called out for it like what's happening now. Since Korea is so image focused, they may conform quicker to look good to the outside, even if they don't really want to do it. Discrimination will never fully go away in any country, but at least a big dent can be eventually made. I'm glad there are people like Sam Okeyere working to change the negative stereotypes.

vonzilla you really pointed out some good stuff. the thing that I've noticed a lot about Korea. It's always about looks which I understand but does that mean throw away the insides too? The thing that I've noticed with this show and I'm not sure if it's just me but when they show someone who experiencing these problems they do it in "zoo" type way. what I mean by that is that they showcase the problem never address it. always saying that if only you did this or if only you did that which you pointed out. problems like these can't be fixed by one but by the many. I too am glad Sam okeyre is doing good.
@vonzilla2082
@vonzilla2082 7 лет назад
Cecelia Thurston I understand what you mean about the "zoo" thing. That's why I don't watch this show much any more. It seems the serious cases never get any real help which is upsetting. That feeling when seeing people in desperate conditions walking away with what seems like no true or further help made me not want to watch much any more. It gave me a bad feeling on the inside and I realized I was starting to feel that almost every episode, which I felt probably wasn't healthy. So I stopped watching except for a show here and there. Hopefully behind the scenes they give people resources where they can get help if they choose to do so. The one good thing about the show is that it can get the person's face out there to help stop people from wrongly judging them. It shouldn't have to be to the point where you have to go on tv and literally say "hey I'm not this or that, so please leave me alone." But at least it seems to work for a lot of the people who have come on the show.

vonzilla wow what you said really struck home. I got that bad taste inside my mouth too. very icky. I watch abnormal summit now and it's much better compared this show in regards that I think most problems are actually being solved. or at least they attempt much more than this show. also is it just me but don't you think they make the lady who's a bit bigger than the average Korean feel ugly like in every episode?
@vonzilla2082
@vonzilla2082 7 лет назад
Cecelia Thurston yea, if you're not really skinny, you're fat, even if the person is not big. There's never much in between area. Big is automatically considered unattractive, and fat is funny. I don't understand it. In the comedy shows like on Gag concert, I noticed pretty much every skit with one of the bigger comedians always has to do with their weight. And some of them I wouldn't consider that big. It kind of annoys me when let's say they have on an outfit that would be considered sexy, but simply because they are bigger it is automatically gross or funny and shouldn't be wearing it. And I'm not talking about an outrageous outfit, it could be something simple. And yes, on this show they are always making fun of Yeongja'a weight and she's not even that big. To me she's mostly just muscular and thick waisted. Sure, she's not an idol star, but she's not ugly. Her hairstyles are a bit questionable at times lol, but she's not ugly so I get tired of them making fun of her looks. I notice too that there seems to be a narrow definition of what's considered pretty. For instance, there are some female comedians over there that are pretty, but I've noticed that they are always bashing them and saying they are ugly or unattractive. Or their character is always the ugly unwanted person even though their face is the same and not changed to character makeup. Actually that annoys me here in the U.S. as well when there are TV shows where someone is playing the "unattractive friend" when the person is clearly attractive. Over the years, I've seen this a lot on shows for teenagers and younger children, and unfortunately they can absorb this while they're being taught what is considered cool or attractive. I try to remember it's just like how it is with Hollywood over here. If you're in the media, you are held to abnormal unhealthy standards of beauty and there is a lot of pressure to look a certain way. Even here in the US we are only just now at the beginning of getting people to accept different shapes and sizes. I will never understand the global viciousness towards bigger people. If someone is not attracted to it, fine, but why the attacks and anger and lashing out that I've seen? Why is it necessary to go out of ones way to give a mean comment to someone simply because of their size? I don't understand the violent nature of it. I know this is getting super long, but I just remembered something. You know the female comedian Gukju(not sure if I spelled that right) the one that was recently on We Got Married with Sleepy. Well I remember seeing her on Happy together once and they were asking her about the relationship with one of her really close actor guy friends who's considered really attractive, the whole "are you guys dating" thing. I think he is her best friend or something like that. And she was like she wouldn't even dare think she could be with him, and she was saying this because of her weight. And I was so sad for her and how she was putting herself down. I wanted so bad for her to know that just because she was bigger doesn't mean she can't get a good looking guy. Because of how society seems to be over there, she automatically excluded herself from getting an awesome guy simply because of what other people would say. I'm pretty sure she would get completely bashed by people if they thought someone was too attractive for her to be with simply because she's bigger. Actually, I heard that they bashed her at one point while she was on the we got married show and she went through a tough period. She seems to be an awesome person all the way around. I love how she continues to do her own thing even though she goes through a lot. I wonder too if some of her hot guy friends were interested in dating her, but didn't act on it because of what other people would say.

I'm a muslim Southeast Asian so I'm naturally tan. I've been to Korea twice and the first time was kind of bitter to me. Few ahjussi were looking and laughing at me and my friends in the airport, like omgggggg it's the airport, not even the city yet and you just gotta be so offensive. One of them approached us and asked "malaysian?" I said yeah and he went back to his friends and laughed again. I actually speak quite fluent Korean so I knew they were laughing at us being so dark despite wearing fully covered clothes. I was so turned off and sworn not to go there ever again but my love for the better side of Korea is bigger so I went for the second time which was August last year. The second time, thankfully was such a lovely experience. Ahjumma and ahjussi in the subway/restaurants treated us in such a friendly and welcoming manner.

to be honest, even most Malaysian dont undertand few people who like korean artists. people here so judgemental towards these few people especially teenagers because people here know those artists artists are plastics. koreans who come here are no difference than chinese here. i used to love kpop and all my friends called me crazy and claimed i have no music taste (sorry but this also happened to other kpop lovers too). so i guess korean dont need to be so arrogant because people here dont really care but they appreciate other people coming here and respect local cultures. and dont be surprised, people here always think theyre more beautiful than korean and natural.

As what TedEdtalks says, Skin Color is our ancestor's adaptation to deadly sun rays called ultra violet rays, the further we are at the equator, the less sun rays we get, so the less melanin we need, the lighter the skin. The skin is not something should be disgusted for. Skin color is not the base of our personality and beauty, it is rather a fascinating adaptation that helps the human species survive in warmer climates. This is not something to be prejudiced for, but something to be thankful for. Without the melanin in our skin, humans living on warmer places will die of skin cancer. Please remember that skin is not identity but rather adaptability.
