+Meg Gunderson LOL, no, we've had requests before, and we actually have a quiet little shop on Zazzle (which we like better than CafePress), and there is actually a cartoon-ish design of the whole thing. We don't promote it much because it feels, well, weird. "Hey, we're selling stuff!" After all, even the RU-vid video thing was an accident... But since so many people ask, we're adding a few newer sayings, hopefully sometime in the next week or so. :)

He does have a gift for the gab! They are excellent mimics by nature (among the best in the parrot family), but due to mostly human failings (and I mean more in the world of breeding, where most are bred in the avian equivalent of puppy mills) they don't mimic nearly as often in captivity. We taught him to talk as a joke-like experiment, and the joke's been on us, for sure.

Can't say it enough of what a sweet awesome bird Disco is. I've had a very challenging couple of months and especially the last few days and being able to finally sit down and view Disco has really made me happy and warmed my heart. Thank you Disco!

Thank you - we adore him, too, believe me! He is actually in the next room, the living room, but it's open to the kitchen, and yep, it seems like I am *always* doing dishes, LOL, or chopping something. He likes the noise of all that, so he chatters along. I can talk to him from where I am, although I have to raise my voice some. We do move his cage, though, so you're still right - he moves around and around, but in the same cage, which rolls due to the wheels on the cart.

They don't all talk - just keep that in mind. And if they do talk, they don't always talk like this. While Disco seems to truly enjoy learning new things and, obviously, repeating them, he is able to do so, and wants to do so, because he sees humans as his flock, which is likely due to our being very involved with him and also his breeder having only bred his parents (and maybe, if I recall, a pair of Quaker Parrots, but that's it - she was not the bird version of a puppy mill, LOL) and also interacted with the birds a LOT. So, Disco has known only good experiences with humans, and enjoys their company. The parrots you have had previously, if they were species known to mimic, may not have had all the same experiences, so it may not have had anything to do with enjoyment. (Hope that made sense.) Disco is a fun little guy,.whether he's talking or playing with his toys (especially dropping them on our heads!). We had no idea he'd talk - at all or like this! Take care!

I had a parakeet that talked when I was young said many things but Disco says so much it just blows my mind! Im in love! Your one smarty pants there Disco baby! I have a 1 yr old parakeet now that I taught how to say Baby Boy and Beep beep beep beep, and what cha doin.......but gota long way to go yet...xoxoxo Disco!

Oh, there's always a few somewhere. (Some don't believe he actually talks like this, even though it's well-documented that budgies are excellent mimics and he's been on TV. We have also been told that some might be envious if their much more expensive bird doesn't speak as well.) It's OK - it doesn't worry us or Disco. We are glad YOU are enjoying him - thanks for your enthusiasm!

They are all so different, which includes their starts in life; if they came from the bird equivalent of a puppy mill, then they may not have had early - and good - experiences with human, which Disco did. Disco is likely genetically-inclined to be an excellent mimic, more so than most budgies, and that by itself gives him a huge edge over most parakeets. Hey, we are amazed, and continue to be so!

I love your videos of Disco! He reminds me of my budgie Cricket who liked to talk non-stop, too. He lived 11 years. I miss him still after 14 years. I wish I had taken more videos of him; but that was before digital cameras with video and smart phones. I hope your Disco lives to a ripe old age!

A great big Thanks for sharing your absolutely adorable *Disco* videos & bringing happiness to many people...You're obviously a loving & caring family with very tender feelings for your sweet little "parakitty" :-) There's no doubt this chatty,"busy" & very animated little feathered fellow is very well cared for & a genuine part of the Family! "Never put a baby bird in the corner" is simply PRICELESS....Honestly, I could literally sit for hours on end & just admire your little sweetie!

Yes, often! He makes us laugh regularly, believe me. And also imagine how many things he says when he's not being recorded - we only have the camera on a small fraction of the time. He has said some really funny things - or has said them in funny ways, like an extra-squeaky voice - that simply makes us laugh like crazy people, but the camera was not on. (And that's OK... well, almost, we know other people would enjoy it!)

Every time I play this my cat runs in the room and stares at Disco, soo funny, Makes me want to go out and get a Parakeet. He seems to have a great time chatting away. Does he do this all day long and is there ever a time when you wish he would be quiet? He certainly is a superstar.

That is so funny! FYI, they don't all mimic like this - some do, some don't, and there's no way to predict it or make it happen. Disco chats off and on all day, from the moment he wakes up until the time we turn out the lights at night. He stops for naps, to eat, to play with toys (although he also talks to his toys, LOL!), etc., and occasionally it requires talking over him or turning up the TV or radio, but I wouldn't say we wish he'd be quiet. (Sometimes we wish his red and green bells weren't so loud, though, hahaha!)

I've been having problems with my parakeet (Happy). He's hyperactive lately and been pecking at his food bowl. Driving me crazy. He's never done that in his 10 yrs with me. Seems to be healthy at overall check. (I always figure acting out may signal a health issue; as it does with many animals.) I think he's just board and wants more attention than I give. Though he has lots. Anyway.... He loves for me to play Disco's videos. It calms him down. Thanks, Disco!... for keeping Happy company! :D

I thought when I first watched a video of Disco talking that it was fake. I know budgies can talk and mimic (I used to have a parakeet that learned to meow like my cat who REALLY wanted closer to that bird cage!), but I've NEVER heard of one talking like he does! Full sentences, and most of the time, in proper context. He's such a cool bird, you've done an awesome job with him!

Disco - I think I remember this correctly - stepped up when we got him, but even to this day he's not really into being petted or scratched, so they are all different. Does your little guy (what is his name?) like millet as a treat? What if you held a small spray of millet in front of the finger onto which you wanted him to step up, and asked him to "step up"? Try that, if you haven't already, and see if that entices him. He sounds adorable! Just keep talking to and playing with him!

Seriously, we love hearing that! We have so much fun with Disco, and we, of course, have the fortune of listening to him all the time; when we can share his videos with others and find out he's really gotten someone to laugh (sometimes a much-needed laugh, from what we're told pretty constantly), it really, really makes us happy. So, thanks for a very kind bit of feedback... I think Disco just "earned" a nice spray of millet and some wet cilantro leaves.

We're amazed, too, most of the time. I am still amazed at the length of the phrases he'll learn - and we don't break them up like we did at first! The only thing that stops him from saying things are 1) lack of interest on his part - he just likes some things more than others, which we totally respect and 2) the L sound, but he even overcomes that eventually. He seems to really enjoy learning.

Yes and no, LOL. He had learned "I am not a crook" at one point (referencing Nixon). Then he learned "My name is Disco" another time. Then he learned "I'm a parakeet" all by himself (still a mystery to us). So then my husband thought it would be funny to have him asking the age-old question "What seems to be the problem, officer?" and decided to teach him all of it together as one long phrase. That said, we've taught him long phrases from scratch - as one phrase - and it just takes longer.

at the end, right after you posted "gibberish for the end" he says "There goes Tokyo" LOL what a cutie pie. I've heard starlings will pick up language, too. And of course myna birds. I never heard a parakeet/budgie talk so much.

This was the first time he's done the beat-boxing in a LONG time. There's a video of him (much, much farther back) of when he did it for the first time; it's cute. He is a sweet bird, and he loves learning new things.

Just to add in a note from my own personal experience with cockatiels (which may be different than what is best for parakeets, I realize that) but I let a new bird sit in its cage alone for no more than an hour, and then I get the bird and put it on my shoulder and go sit in my room, quietly, get on the computer or something. This has made every single bird to be comfortable with me, trusting me, and allow me to get it comfortable with touching, petting, etc. it learns cage and shoulder are ok.

Looks a lot like our "Bobby" who also fluffed up when going to sleep. He was a pretty good talker but imitated my mom almost exclusively. "Let's go, John...LET'S GO, eh? C'mon, c'mon c'mon!"" was his most frequent utterance. He lived 18 1/2 years.

Over the years, I had one parakeet that talked (and he talked profusely) and sadly he died unexpected after 1 and 1/2 years. He used to bang his beak against things and yell "Beak" as well as combining "come here" and "perch" as "comerch". He was a great grr (our internal name for birds) I could Disco''s s speaking was authentic based on the way he combine words.

Thanks for the kind compliment! Do you have one bird or more than one? Is it a parakeet/budgie? How old is the bird? Disco was still pretty young when he came to us - about four months old - and we started repeated a phrase to him right away ("pretty bird" of course!) and he repeated it by three weeks, and then it just took off from there (to our surprise, mind you!). Just pick ONE short thing, and repeat it as often as you can, with a very excited voice and very clear speech.

No, the "I am not a crook" "I'm a parakeet" and "My name is Disco" were all very independent. (It's a mystery still to this day how he learned that statement about being a parakeet - we did not teach it to him.) But then my husband came up with the entire thing, and then ran it together with the "What seems to be the problem..." part, and Disco caught on fast. He loves the whole phrase, too - he says it a lot.
