More Solar going in the garden , ground mounted 6 x 425w panels
This adds to my 9.2kwp already installed so total panel power will be 11.7kwp once complete.
Without scaffolding and using surplus panels from the warehouse , this install should be reasonably priced. I'm hoping so any way .
This video is in two parts , discussing the extra solar and wind options I've chosen

Hi - I'm a Ripple windfarm owner of Craig Fatha (the 1st windfarm) and also get a monthly credit on my Octopus Account. We had a cracking 2nd year PPA set at 27p/kWh...that's now come back down to 6p/kWh again. I recon we'll probably breakeven after about 5 years...the initial calculation was about 16 years so it's been a great investment for us. Would highly recommend them to anyone even if you have solar as the credits and generation really help balance the lack of sun in winter.

Welcome to the Ripple club! I was the same, I knew it wouldn't be a huge amount off the bills but it is an ethical investment in the sense that it supports new renewable projects getting off the ground and it is quite cool to be a part owner of a wind farm. My home solar is great, but I still wanted to do more. Ripple means with a modest amount of cash you can chip in to something big.

My regret from my own installation was not placing 2 or 3 panels on the small amount of west facing roof I have. My others face due south and a few facing due east. It seems obvious now but when you export for revenue the solar generated in the late afternoon / early evening is worth more money per west-facing panel (Octopus Flux in my case). It's such an obvious point now but at the time the impact of the Octopus export period was lost to me, having not been on a ToD solar tariff before. I also learned the positive lesson as to why shallow-angle panels work so well in the UK (albeit only with more recent panel designs). On bright(ish) overcast days my 10º panels produce way more than my 45º panels.

I put in a 30 panel ground mount system last year on my property. Used ground screws rather than sleepers because the panels are in a long row and we get strong south westerly winds. I played with small wind a few years ago but the yield was stupidly low with my mean windspeed of 3m/s. I'd say not bother with small wind unless you have a mean windspeed >5m/s.

How about micro inverters on the the panels themselves, or in pairs? This would help with shading and the impact on the string if any one panel is not performing. Also, you can place the AC output on a breaker in your consumer unit and as you have an export tariff you can just enjoy exporting and store more on your current setup. I'm looking at a garden panel on top of a shed along with a micro inverter and not interfacing it with my current system - as I don't wan to put the warranty at risk. You also should look at what tariff you are on. For high consumption either Octopus Go, Agile or Tracker can seriously reduce the bill. We ran our ASHP through the winter with just 4.2kW of battery storage on Agile; it was enough to mean we didn't import in the peak period

@@EVPuzzle Those tariffs are not available in Northern Ireland. We have the cheapest tariff available but it’s not brilliant. It’s the two electric cars doing the real damage I think, we drive 60k miles a year. I had planned an off grid power set up when building the house, but wifey wasn’t keen. Now that the house is built and the bills are enormous, she’s now interested in an off grid system. However the £30k I had allocated for solar, batteries and a quality back up generator was spent on a kitchen and granite work tops! We could have added to £6k our grid connection cost to that too which would have provided an excellent quality system. At this rate of consumption we would have clawed back the investment in six years or less. Having built a house through Covid we suffered from very high material cost price hikes. As it stands I’ll be able to fit a 4.8kw system with 10kwh of home storage battery. It will go some way towards offsetting our huge electric bills, however until then I’ll just have to pay the electric company and lament on the lost opportunity.

An inverter on Victron Ac out (Factor 1.0 rule applies) or as you mentioned and MPPT has the advantage that you don’t have to inform your DNO of the change which can get complicated. Also having an MPPT gives you a Black start capability which I don’t think you have at the moment? Keep up the good work.

Have you thought of skipping the inverter and wiring the new panels directly into the battery (DC)? I recently added a small array this way and I find it comes on earlier and turns off later than the main panels which are AC connected. There should be less losses too as you only have to convert DC to AC once rather than DC to Ac then back to DC for battery storage then back to AC to use. The DC array should also remain on in a power cut. The only downside I have found is that because you can't use a CT clamp to monitor a DC wire, it isn't easy to measure the exact generation and I have to rely on the battery software to do that.

All very sensible - we are waiting for the local farmer to let us have a bit of land for a ground array but not holding our breath ( we will need a change if use for that i expect ) for the ground array low winter sun might be an issue. -i think you mentioned that. but if you can live with the aesthetics of them in your garden the price is so low for panels why not. I'd opt for the MTTP in via the victron ? We invested with ripple and our share of Kirk hill is almost live - first savings in our July bill. We punted 2k which at the time was 50% of out electric - now that is more like 100% as we also put in Solar which is going very well ( just applied for exporting via Octopus) Ripple have been good but they ran over on their project which in my estimation cost us as the delay pushed the price we get for the electric from the turbines into a less favourable negotiation.... hopefully they will have learnt as it was the stuff at the end - fibre connections where the delay was. We invested as we could take it with us. Their solar park at 40 years is too long for us oldies, hopefully I'll see the full 25 years out for the Kirk hill investment - might punt a few hundred into the new one as i have a registration there just to 'top up' but iirc its a 2025/26 delivery ..... A bit strange to be planning on 4ish MW turbines if the production timeline is 2026-2027 winter. Not familiar with UK restrictions on wind power, but in Lithuania it seems to be more cost effective 6.5-6.8MW just because you need less infrastructure and build time. There was plan to make available renting power from wind farms in Lithuania, but due low interest they dropped that idea. Mainly because they wanted to pay off whole building cost per kw in 2 years from rent, making it not competitive. Nice that this program works in UK

Just for info, apparently 2/3 of the energy generated by old methods, going long distances over big cables, etc, is lost. Some of the issues apply to new generation too, but by building sustainable wind farms, locally, we’re going to be able to avoid much inefficiency and lost energy. The amount lost, amazed me. The info is from reliable sources, from the side of engineering the machinery and building the infrastructure/grid. I knew generating locally with wind or solar was sensible, I didn’t realise just how much could be saved - we don’t need to generate the same amount of energy, if we do,it local to where it’s normally getting used! IE having a huge nuclear power plant 200 miles away, is the same as a generator system half the size, within a few miles. Take care all.

In the UK EV charges are now mandatory under planning and Building Regulations (Part S) for all new builds. Solar is almost mandatory under building regulations (Part L). Only time you don't need them is if installing an ASHP and then it depends on insulation levels. The next edition of the Building regs I'm almost certain gas boilers will be banned and ASHP + PV will be the norm. Rain water harvestings has never really taken off over here (bit odd given how damp it usually is) but we are restricted under Building Regulations (Part G) for the water usage per person on flow rates to taps, showers, WC flushes etc. If you want deep baths and high flow rain fall showers then you need to install harvesting to offset the additional usage. It's a slow process as the Building Regs are updated every 3-4 years to give developers time to adapt. Without getting political, we were meant to have been at "net zero" back in 2016 for all new houses under the old "Code for Sustainable Homes", however a recession a few years earlier forced several delays to this with a lot of opposition from developers over the additional costs. The whole thing was scrapped/phased out as we were just getting to Level 4, out of the proposed 6 stages, so weren't too far off.

You want to go MPPT and keep the new solar on the DC side - much more efficient for charging the batteries. Our new system is like this and works brilliantly. We also have our old FIT inverter sitting on the protected side of the Victron inverter so it will keep generating in a power cut. Any reason you cant do that with one or more of your existing inverters? Why are you looking at more batteries?

If Voc on those panels is under 50v then you could do two strings of 3 paralleled together to give 150v. A bluesolar 150/45 would do it. You may need to add fuses to the two strings to guard against a failed panel causing cascade failures. See victron "wiring unlimited" doc for details.

@VillageVidiot100
@VillageVidiot100 Месяц назад
@@EVPuzzle yes fair enough. In the 150v configuration at max output (2400w), the power loss in a 100 foot run of 4mm cable is 70 watts. Up that cable to 6mm cable and it's 47w. If you went with the 300 volt configuration power loss on 100 foot is 17w with 4mm cable and 11 watts with 6mm. The losses will reduce when the panels are running at lower output. If you want to stick with 300V system then you would need a 450/100 MPPT which is much more expensive than the 150/45.

Not sure how you are able to instal so much solar when for me (northern power) refused to permit me to instal anything greater than 3.6 kW inverter as they limited my potential export to grid; DNO, grid infrastructure, any comments? Interesting video Nigel, thanks. Just a note about the ground mounted array and Planning Permission. You can avoid PP and use your Permitted Development rights, but only under certain conditions. Two that may apply are the maximum 9 sqm size (3 or 4 panels) and that the array must be at least 5 metres from any boundary. That being said, I would have stuck it in just as you have. I probably wouldn’t have said you don’t need PP though as that’s not correct. Just moved in to a place with 13 panels and making plans to add more panels, a battery and eventually upgrade the existing system. Also getting rid of the oil boiler and fitting a heat pump. Looking forward to it!

Even in areas where rain is infrequent it is crazy to waste the little rain that does fall and waste it. We need to stop planting green lawns and switch to local native plantings around homes.
