Also, Julie, us gals would like to follow Allison to yard and garage sales, while Morgan can please all the many guys who enjoy being farmers and watching him figuring out auctions . I suspect Allison would make many and better deals in the long run.

This was such a cool insight into farming. I really wonder if the farmers that talk down on other farmers that share on social media realize how beneficial it can be. I'm not even talking about finances. The more insight you have into the lives of others, the more sympathy you're able to gain. I didn't understand the difficulty of generational farms until I learned about it through channels like yours.

@Grow and Build Stuff Gatekeeping is the reason people are hesitant to start projects like this. They have a permaculture orchard, flocks of geese and chickens, cows, they sell the products they grow. Eventually, they'll be selling products from their cows. Their household income is largely supported by their farming. Get out of here with that crap.

This auction feels like it's happening in a Western movie. So exotic and interesting to an Eastern European like me. Uplifting to think that stuff has been probably sold and re-sold this exact way for the last 100 years. Also, the auctioneer's got amazing enunciation!

I think he's right about just "Renting" or Hiring his neighbours to do it... First, $300 for "Other side of Vermont and back" that seems like the basic cost of Gas, and maybe a Lunch for the guy.... Second, Aside from this being WAY cheaper, it's great to help out your neighbours, giving them work / money...
@JudyHart1
@JudyHart1 2 года назад
I always worry about too much trailer and contents, and the truck not being powered enough, then the tail wags the dog and you’re in a pinch. Not where you wish to be. I’ve had horses fall down in my trailer as I’m going down the road, you want to have enough horsepower to not go off the road when that happens, always plan for the worst scenario. Good decision on the trailer.

@@lokithecat7225 Equipment « sharing » is what allows farmers in my region to survive. They rent out their equipment to each other, so they all have access to specialized and efficient equipment, while not having to buy them all. Also, there’s some jobs where adding more people on the task make it a lot faster, so they’ll even work together on some projects.

LOVED THIS VIDEO! More, please! As a dedicated auction goer, I would say, try to be more subtle in your bidding. Never wave your card. Someone who knows you and doesn’t approve of a “newbie” may choose to intentionally force your bid up out of sheer spite. Make eye contact with a staff member, and all you need is a slight nod, or a lifted finger, to indicate your intention. Cut the asked bid in half by holding your hand flat, palm down, down by your waist, and make a horizontal slicing move…. For example, if the auctioneer is asking for a $50 increase, a slicing move says you’re offering to raise by $25. Use this technique judiciously, tho - only towards the end when bidding slows for an item. You don’t want to annoy the auctioneer when bidding is fast and furious at his/her requested raise amount. Watch other bidders closely, especially repeat winners, and learn from their techniques. Arriving early, making a list, researching, and setting your max price in advance, is an excellent methodology to minimize the chance of “auction fever regrets”!! 😊
@11matt11
@11matt11 2 года назад
It's not always sheer spite. Most times it's people who actually work for the bank or company who know you're a newbie or overly eager, and try and take advantage of that. They keep upbidding looking for signs you'll keep going, and when they read your body language you're almost done, they stop. If they bid too high, they usually have another auction soon after, where they know they can just sell it there. They're called dead ringers where I'm from, and the banks have spent a lot of money to make sure they're not illegal. I totally agree, you have to be very careful as a newbie, and act as cool as possible.
@25centsworth
@25centsworth 2 года назад
Excellent advice -- a lot of it is lessons learned, and thus very practical. Morgan, no waving, lol. Also, you don't need to jump in at the end -- at your highest price. People will come to know this quickly about you, and may up the price to shut you out. Plus, if you make an earlier bid, the auctioneer will keep an eye on you and come back to see if you'll bid again. This can help to make a higher bid more subtle (and halved like she described above). Or just subtlety shake your head 'no,' which he'll appreciate when you're done. Keep 'em guessing, Morgan, but make your bidding easy for the auctioneer. The dance -- PS But, you did great with the gates and well done!
@zebraloverbridget
@zebraloverbridget 2 года назад
I think that being subtle only really works for small auctions like this one. If you're at a big auction with hundreds of people then you'll never get a bid in like that unless you're at the front and wear something eye catching.

You have to be very careful as a newbie to auctions. I once went to a car auction, and I noticed that the same guys kept bidding up the cars that I was interested in. I came back the next month, and the same cars were still there, up again for auction. They were definite ringers, up bidding to people they thought they could get.

Farm auctions always make me sad too. We have a family farm that's been in the family over 100 years and though I never was in farming (the farm was a fun trip on summer weekends) my dad has stories from when he grew up with his great and grand parents and dad. One story was about a neighbor that lost his farm and he ended up hanging himself in the barn. His widow ended up hosting the liquidation by herself and my dad was furious that his dad went to that auction. So now that story is tied with my view on auctions

That actually looked like it might be a legit auction. I helped run furniture auctions all over Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. The auctioneer was also the owner of the furniture store. He knew what prices he wanted for each product so pretended to have multiple bidders even when there was only one person bidding. For bigger auctions, he hired shills to bid in the audience to make it look more legit. We once had a bidder ask who was bidding against him. We didn't have any shills working that auction. Luckily, the crowd booed and the auction continued. The crowd saved us that day...

I really enjoyed it and it’s all part of farming and trying to save money. Knowing what things cost is knowing what to bid. Two for the price of one works for me. The trailer was a luxury really but 35 years old no not worth $4,000. $3,000 would have been my max.

One aspect that is super awesome about this is just that Morgan is reusing already made materials and not have to go out and get brand new stuff. Remember the 3 'R's from school: Reuse, reduce, recycle!

This was neat! I like seeing the day to day of your farm, it makes it feel really special while also demonstrating that it is hard work, which i appreciate!

Those gates can be cleaned up with a wire brush and sprayed with high heat resistant spray paint for about ten bucks! Great deal!!

💖You are such a sensitive, kind and smart person. You should transform your farm into a farm sanctuary… with your ability to convince people you surely would get enoug donations. 💖

This was really interesting to watch. Loved seeing your thinking process behind the items you chose to bid on and deciding on the price cap beforehand to avoid impulsivity.

This was fun. I think it was smart that you set a price ahead of time and stuck with it. Sometimes we want stuff and overspend. Difference between wanting and needing.

I really enjoyed that. Please more. You need a livestock trailer in an emergency. Having lived through a couple of evaluation it is critical to have your own.

Morgan, that was a very well planned approach. The whole video is good at showing your thinking processes. You stayed close to your plan on the trailer and that is important. You do know there will be opportunities in the future. The need is not great now. If the need increases (it could) and you might be in a better financial situation too, so getting a better condition trailer later just might be possible. So many variables to consider. Glad you got those panels. Yes watching this part of farm life is interesting too.

I love how all these people were just staring like they have never seen a camera before, just made me chuckle, no disrespect. I think you restrained yourself very well. I have been to an auction before and you can get caught up in the whirl of it all, so good job my friend 😁
