I wear mineral sunscreens because a Derm said chemical sunscreens are absorbed into our bloodstream so it’s best to avoid them. Thank you for always giving us your honest opinion on mineral sunscreens even though you don’t wear them.
To answer your question, I opt for mineral sunscreens because I struggle with oily, sensitive, acne-prone skin with hyperpigmentation and I've been told that zinc oxide is better to help with the hyperpigmentation, in particular. I struggle to find the best sunscreen after years of trying recommended products.
I took a lot of chemistry for my science degree, so I get these sunscreen terms ("chemical", "mineral") confused because they make no sense. The terms "organic" and "inorganic" make more sense to me given the chemical make-up of sunscreen. However, I prefer the titanium dioxide or zinc oxide ingredients, or a hybrid sunscreen because I have fewer symptoms (eye tearing) and less break-outs with those ingredients. Your channel has been very helpful for me to find good hybrid options that don't leave noticeable casts. Thanks!
For me it's been easier to remember that titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are the only two mineral and everything else is chemical. Both of these are ingredients I use in making a lot of products, whereas I've never used the other chemicals (because I don't try to make sunscreen.) Makes it easier. I do agree that it sucks when a common name for something is less obvious, but it can be really difficult to get people to adapt to new nomenclature. I prefer mineral sunscreen because it doesn’t irritate my eyes. I also noticed I sweat less with mineral sunscreen. I tried that SuperGoop Mineral unseen Sunscreen and you can definitely see the cast on my chocolate skin. I still use it though when I go on my walks and won’t be going into stores.
I wear mineral sunscreen because I am allergic to chemical sunscreens. For a hot second I actually thought I was allergic to the sun! It took some time for me to realize it was the sunscreen that was causing hives all over my body everywhere the light touched. I'm sure that I am not allergic to all the chemical sunscreens on the market, it's more likely a specific chemical or class of chemicals that I am allergic to, but after so many reactions, I gave up trying new ones and just stick to the mineral ones because they don't cause any issues for me. Since I can't wear chemical sunscreens at all, I need mineral sunscreen for every part of my body and every occasion. Ideally something unscented with minimal ingredients because my skin is sensitive.
After educating myself, I've become a physical sunscreen kind of gal. I have sensitive skin so it makes sense for me. Thanks for doing these reviews because your videos have helped me save money on purchases!!
3:53 I wear mineral sunscreen because after a long day ( I dont even need to be in the sun a lot) I feel like a chemical ( I use Eucerin-oil control) « cooks » on my face. I dont know how to explain it perfectly thru text but at the end of the day my face will look « darker » in a « red-ish” tone as if I’ve burned myself in the sun. And i put a lot of sunscreen on so I really don’t know what could be the issue! Since my skin concern is my hyperpigmentation ( my face is darker than my body) this really is an issue for me and I feel like a mineral sunscreen doesn’t irritate my skin as much
After more research i’ve come to the conclusion that denatured alcohol which is one of the main ingredients of those sunscreens could potentially be the cause/ culprit of this issue. So for now ive just decided to stick with the white cast of my mineral sunscreen 🥲
Dealing with hyperpigmentation as well, and from what my dermatologist told me. Chemical sunscreen brings the suns rays into the skin then reflects the back out to the sun. Whereas mineral sunscreen just blocks the sun totally from the skin. Hope that helps.

You know you made me fall in love with the Olay sunscreen and then they discontinued it 😩. For some reason after I couldn’t wear American sunscreen due to them all burning my eyes. I’ve been loving the Centella Sunscreen Calming Moisture Daily Sunscreen SPF 50+ PA++++ Centella Water-fit Sun.
The Olay Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen is the replacement I use. Just make sure your skin is dry when you apply it. You only need 1 pump for your face The white cast goes away after a few minutes.

I have sensitive skin overall, but even more so on my face, so that's why I only use mineral sunscreen there. Dr. V Inzincable spf 50 Mineral sunscreen has been my go to for my face for several years, and it has yet to cause any issues with my skin. There not being any fragrance and/or essential oils in its formulation is a HUGE reason why I love it so much, since those things have done damage to my face many times in the past. Not to mention that it was made for people of color, like me, with similar skin concerns that I have, like hyperpigmentation.
I prefer mineral sunscreens because chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the bloodstream. There was a study in 2020 that stated those chemicals do build up in our bloodstream in levels higher than previously thought. Especially when pregnant, I want to use products that are safe. Mineral sunscreens never burn my eyes! My favorite mineral sunscreen was Olay Regenerist, but it is getting harder to find. Now I use Olay Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen.
My dermatologist and primary dr. recommend mineral sunscreen due to allergic reactions to avobenzene and several of the other chemicals. Also, chemical sunscreens cause my melasma spots to darken within hours no matter how much I apply or how often. I have purchased at all price points, and I have never found a suitable chemical sunscreen. The Murad that you used in this review is the only sunscreen that I have used that protects my skin.
Yay new sunscreen vid! Love it! Edit: I definitely perfer mineral. Originally it was due mineral susncreens working a better to improve hyperpigmentation but now, after venturing to chemical, even those with iron oxides, I've been breaking out. Chemicals have been breaking out. I tried a variety of beauty of joseon and supergoop sunscreen and was left with pimples for the first time in months. Maybe there's a better chemical susncreen brand that won't break me out? It'll be great when I find one.
Thanks for uploading in the nick of time! Been researching new sunscreens. I have the suntique I'm safe for sensitive skin sunscreen. I believe it's a hybrid but I tend to go for minerals. I usually get it from soko glam but last i checked they don't carry it. I don't really shop asian beauty products online outside of sokoglam because I didn't get my order one time when i ordered from yesstyle and I dont like that lol. I like mineral sunscreens because sometimes the chemical ones irritate my skin. There are some that the alcohol was so strongbit irritated my eyes. I don't want to have to use one sunscreen for my eye area and the rest for the rest of the face. I remember using one and it broke me out. I also fell for the "physical blocks and chemical absorbs" supposed myth. I say supposed because I believe Lab Muffin Beauty Science said it is not necessarily true. The mineral supergoop one. I think that's a reformulation because I remember you did a video on the old one years ago which got me into getting it. I was curious but noticed it's still $40 for what an ounce of product?! And I saw a cosmetic science influencer on IG try it and there was definitely a cast. He's deeper than you and I so if anyone have his complexion buyer beware.
Yay to a sunscreen video. I wear both Mineral (when I want some tinted coverage) and Chemical but the formulas must have skincare benefits since I’m lazy and need them to kill multiple birds with 1 stone. Also love Niacinamide. The Murad looks good on you (pricy though) and I have Skin Proud one (nice texture but kinda sticky). Interesting to see the sticks-I never really wear them since I have a hard time figuring out how much I’m actually using 💁🏽♀️
I love the Olay Regenerist Vitamin C + Peptide 24 Face Moisturizer, SPF 30. I think you talked about it how I got hipped to it. I enjoy it. I might try the Olay moisturizer stick with the spf 50.
I noticed that I would break out more when I tried chemical sunscreens. Well the ones based in the U.S. I’ve switched over to Korean ones and mostly no worries now. Love them so much.

I really enjoy your sunscreen reviews. I bought the SDJ sunscreen oil and spray. I am not crazy about the scent either lol. I’m partial to #62, #71, #40, #68 & #59. The black girl sunscreen is my go to for my face as well as the Kinlo when I want a tint.
I prefer mineral natural sunscreen and sun blockers on my oily skin because it's healthier and doesn't agitate my skin. The chemical ones agitate my skin drying it out and causes my eyes to water, tear, itch and swell horrifically. My oily skin can't do chemicals. Also I've never worn makeup could be the reason my oily skin love natural products.
I have very sensitive skin on my face, so I've been using fragrance-free mineral sunscreens usually with iron oxides since that's what my Black dermatologist recommended for hyperpigmentation. I like Kinlō, Naomi Osaka's sun care line, as well as the ILIA Skin Tint, though I've found it feels a bit tacky even several minutes after application. When I don't feel like dealing with the transfer issues those both have (I'm not a daily foundation wearer), I've been using the Olay Mineral that you recommended. What I'd like to find is a good mineral sunscreen I can use on my kid's face and body that he won't hate because it feels and looks like clay.
I love the unseen mineral sunscreen as a mattifying and blurring primer. I wear a chemical sunscreen that makes me a little shiny, and I have oily/combo skin, so the stuff is great for keeping makeup on and keeping me from being shiny.

I usually don’t wear makeup and all the mineral sunscreens I’ve tried I feel like I can see. Hence unseen chemical is my go to. Just bought SDJ body oil today to try!
Edit: I got the Elta MD hybrid sunscreen. It gets a pass in the world of mineral sunscreens that work for melanated skin, but as far as I’m concerned Cotz Flawless Richly Tinted SPF 50 and Olay Mineral Sensitive SPF 30 are still the mineral sunscreens to beat in terms of transparency. I just found it a little streaky, and it also pilled a lot for me with reapplication. (I am NW45 shade for reference.)
I have acne prone, oily skin and discoloration issues. My dermatologist recommended mineral sunscreen because she indicated it is less irritating on the acne and the zinc helps with hyperpigmentation and inflammation. I was skeptical when she told me this. In the area where I live, there are no African American dermatologists. I have no way of consulting with someone of my complexion unless I travel a far distance. The dermatologist that I see is very popular in my city, so I gave their office a try. However, I researched my trusty RU-vid dermatologist Dr. Alexis, and she said the same things in one of her videos that my dermatologist recommended. They have me using color science. It's a great sunscreen when I go out becasue it also provides makeup coverage, it is just on the pricier side. It blends well with my skin tone. However, I am home a lot, and I am looking for another screen that does not have makeup in it, like color science, that I can wear when I am just chilling outside at home. I live in Louisiana and the sun is beaming outdoors and it is hot as hell right now. And I am looking for one that leaves no white cast. I have tried "Native", and it leaves a white cast. Any suggestions would be helpful.
I've always worn chemical sunscreens but like other commenters, I've seen black derms recommend mineral (like Dr Alexis Stephens). I know some derms also recommend mineral sunscreens when you're pregnant but other derms say use what you like and will wear including chemical. When I'm done with my current sunscreen, I might check out the Olay prime and protect. As for sunscreen sticks, I'd also go with the Olay because I have no interest in smelling like fruit.
I've prefered Mineral sunscreen because every chemical one I've tried before has created irritation/sensitivity. I have combination skin with ezcema and the irritation makes me simply not use them. Using mineral ones allows me to be consistent, but if I found the world's least irritating chemical one I'd try it (thinking about the Korean ones). Any suggestions?
I like sunscreens in a squeeze tube. I tried pumps but some are hard to open when you can't dispense with the pump and i end up throwing it away and who knows how much product was left? The olay stick is intriguing but i imagine me putting it over my makeup and it having residue on it. Do I scrape it off and risk losing product...? That's how my mind goes sometimes. 😂

Dr. Dray's video states that iron oxide in mineral sunscreen prevents hyperpigmentation in pigmented skin. This is the only reason why I would use mineral sunscreen. UVA is more of a concern for people with Melanin than UVB. I prefer European or Japanese/Korean chemical sunscreens as they have better UVA protection than US brands, and some formulations protect against some hyperpigmentation issues.
Heyyy! Not all mineral sunscreens contain iron oxides. Iron oxide is a pigment vastly used to give cosmetics color. Foundations, concealers, and tinted sunscreens are among some products that contain iron oxides. What Dr Dray was referring to were * tinted * mineral sunscreens. You are so right about mineral sunscreen. Unfortunately, that’s all that I can use since I have Rosacea (I am black). Using anything else irritates my face flaring up the Rosacea. 😢
Hey Danielle, So I remember never really liking sunscreen and for a long time I was told people who had eczema and sensitive skin and ect should avoid chemical sunscreens. At that time i was having eczema flare ups and things of that nature so I said ok well something was better than nothing at all but ummm No Ma’am 👀😳 I mean I wear makeup but there are days that I don’t and I was not wearing those mineral sunscreens just by themselves 🤦🏾♀️ And the only reason I did at the time was because of my eczema. I am not a fan of mineral sunscreens. I am so glad that my skin is doing wayyyy better over the years and I hardly ever have flare up and if I do they are very short lived and chemical sunscreens (not all) but some work just fine and does not effect the area on my face we’re I am eczema prone.
I use mineral because my skin is extremely sensitive and reactive. My dermatologist said mineral sunscreen is better for sensitive skin. Chemical sunscreens absorb heat and can cause burning and stinging and flushing for people with sensitive skin and rosacea. Also chemical sunscreen is terrible for coral reef- it kills it. Chemical sunscreens are not allowed in some places, such as Hawaii. I’m trying to save our oceans!
hey boo! so there are some things in there that are common misconceptions. the amount of heat absorbed by chemical sunscreens is very minuscule---aka not enough for it to affect the skin in a way that would affect hyperpigmentation. Mineral sunscreens also absorb some heat, too. The way a chemical sunscreen would make hyperpigmentation or impaired skin barrier conditions worse is if one was allergic to something in it---but that's also true of a mineral sunscreen---or any skincare or household product. Derms are obviously who we should go to for skin issues, but they aren't all trained on how products are made or ingredients. That type of speciality is where people like cosmetic chemists and toxicologists come into play. Some derms have this false belief that the heat absorbed from chemical sunscreens can make hyperpigmentation worse, but this has been debunked. I love a sunscreen video! I usually wear mineral, I think my old derm said to, can't remember, but I will wear both. I have the body oil and although I typically wear unscented everything, I did not mind the smell on it that much. I cannot find my Kroger SPF body oil spray, and the Supergoop never offers a discount, ha ha. I did like the Olay, will need to try the new formula although I usually go for a 50, especially where I live.
Mineral sunscreens don’t contaminate water as the chemical ones, so that’s a very friendly choice for the environment. There are some parts in México, for example in the cenotes in Tulum or Mérida, where is not allowed to enter with a non organic, eco friendly sunscreen, an example of it is the Mineral sunscreen or one that’s made only with Zinc Oxide or Titanium Oxide which are natural minerals found in sea water.

I am currently using Elta MD mineral sunscreen (don’t remember which one but will edit later when I can). Wearing sunscreen has helped with my eczema and hyperpigmentation. I want to try Olay and Glow recipe sunscreen sticks if they could be lesser expensive options without having to go dermatologist office to buy it.
I use mineral sunscreens because I was told it was better for sensitive, acne-prone skin and hyperpigmentation. My understanding is that zinc oxide is better to help with these things. I found out that chemical sunscreens found in the US irritate my eyes so was using BoJ sunscreen which was good till i stopped. Now, I use mineral sunscreen because that is what is recommended by obgyn for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.

Normally I love a chemical sunscreen. I'm currently breastfeeding and the pediatrician said that chemical sunscreen gets into the bloodstream and can get into the milk and they just don't know if it's safe. It's new so it's hard to justify the risk. By the way NYX and Skin Proud are chemical sunscreens, they have avobenzene in them.😢
I'm searching for a chemical sunscreen that I can wear. That's why I'm watching this video. All the ones I've tried so far irritate my skin. Along with the chemical ingredients the alcohol in some of the irritates my skin, and I know they say you can wear it, but it just irritates my skin. I don't know if it's because I have acne, but I just don't like the burning, tight feeling. I've had better luck with mineral sunscreens not irritating me, but the cast is an issue. That's why I only stick with tinted sunscreens.

I had to switch to only mineral sunscreens in recent months because at 43yrs old my allergies have decided to transition into eye allergies. I found Chemical sunscreens even my old faithfuls now cause my eyes to water and burn. And i know you can just not put it near my eyes but then I’d have to use two different sunscreens everyday. Chem for my face and mineral for my eyes and I’m far too lazy for that. I’ve found minerals don’t cause any skin or eye irritation. I like Fenty mineral original and tinted, Unsun tinted mineral, supergoop Daily Dose bioretinol + mineral & the tinted re-setter mineral powder in the darkest shade.

My body told me many years ago it just doesn't like chemical sunscreen. I break out in *painful* hives😩 Last summer I made the mistake of, not only using a family member's chemical sunscreen on my body while on vacay, but was using a Korean one on my face. Let's just say I paid the price, and gotta be out here looking like Casper 😭 Radiance is only at bedtime🙄
I just started wearing mineral sunscreens and I’ve been wearing sunscreen since I was 14 back in the 70s. I made the switch when I saw a dermatologist on TV talking about the chemicals used in the non-mineral kind. I’m not sure I’m a fan.
I prefer chemical Asian sunscreen for my face and body (especially triazine and trizone filters). For my neck and chest I use mineral sunscreen because my neck and chest are very sensitive.

I've talked to a lot of black derms and they mostly recommend mineral sunscreens as a precaution because most of the people they see are the people who have skin conditions and reactions. But many of those same derms would also say the sunscreen you love and wear is the best sunscreen.
Idk I’m not a big fan of any of the sol de janeiro products. It’s not moisturizing enough for my dry af skin and some of the scents borderline on sickly smelling (my opinion) You know what I would love in an ideal universe? If your friends at Jergens put some spf in their shea and cocoa butter lotion cuz baaaaabeee that’s my absolute favorite.
I used to love chemical sunscreens, until I recently came across several articles from dermatologists and cosmetic chemists that suggest that there is a direct link to the chemicals in chemical sunscreens and cancer by them being absorbed into your skin and although I’m sure there are plenty of other things that we consume on a daily basis that can contribute to an absorption/exposure to cancer-related chemicals, I thought I’d lessen the likelihood with sunscreen since it’s something that I’m supposed to wear every single day! Plus…since I do have sensitive, oily, and acne-prone skin, anything that is absorbed into my skin can potentially cause more irritation and acne compared to something that just sits on top of my skin that doesn’t absorb into the skin as much (or isn’t supposed to)…let me know your thoughts! 😊
I prefer hybrid of titanium and zinc oxide only. No other chemicals have a better finish for me who is light to fair skin with freckles and needs sunscreen ALWAYS.

I opt for mineral sunscreen just becoz no one single chemical sunscreen I've tried not cause breakout/allergic reaction on my annoying skin 😢 even half of the mineral sunscreens that I tried did the same thing, so.
Chemical sunscreens break me out and burn my eyes. I've found 1 that hasn't been breaking me out but still stings my eyes so I use mineral around my eyes and the Chemical 1 on the perimeter lol.

I want to wear sunscreen so badly, but they all burn my eyes, even the mineral ones. I know us black beauties need to wear sunscreen, but I refuse to walk around with burning eyes. I do not put sunscreen on my eyelids, but somehow, it migrates down into my eyes every time.
