i LOVE this. it is so refreshing to hear someone speak about their evolving relationship to consumerism. within the past 2 years i've personally been reconsidering my relationship to consumption, sustainability, money, etc. i have thought/explored at length how i'd felt so disconnected from my core values. it wasn't ever as if i had tons of money & was buying super pricey things, but that the money i did have went to stuff that didn't align with my values, & i knew it wasn't a matter of buying most of those things out of necessity, for me. it started for me with re-evaluating my relationship with fast fashion, fast beauty, buying things (again, that weren't out of necessity) that i knew the people that made it weren't paid a fair wage, or the shade range excluded many skin tones, or animals were tortured for the product to be tested on them, & for what? so it could sit in my makeup drawer & get used maybe 10 times a year at most. for me utilizing this value-based process led me to choose things like eating more vegetarian meals, reconsidering how often i engage with social media, & ultimately has led me to want to live intentionally to the best of my ability as far as it makes sense for my budget, my heath, & my morals. i even started to reject all the minimalism stuff on social media because it is elitist & suggestive of hierarchical consumption which i don't think helps anyone when we all live under capitalism & the vast majority of people in the world need to participate at least partially in unethical consumption in order to live & have basic needs met. anyway, i don't mean to make it deeper than it is, but it feels helpful for me, when it comes to the few creators i still follow, to see myself in what/who i watch. thank you for remaining authentic to your values as a consumer & an individual, it is helpful, it is refreshing, & it is empowering to see people say "hey, this thing thats super common & a huge part of our culture doesn't sit well with me & i want to explore what my life would be like without it". i wish this was more common than it is, because i think it is more accessible than people realize, especially when it is tailored to our personal needs. sending you so much love
Thank you for sharing your thoughtful words and experience with reevaluating your consumption. I really believe once you begin to explore your true identify and values, everything else falls into place. It can start as a brutal reality and be really challenging to not only reverse your mindset but also forgive yourself and let go of the person you used to be. You’re right, this is more accessible than we all realize. We justify so much of our fast consumption and it becomes easier to ignore how unintentional, unhealthy, exploitative, and harmful it really is.
The less makeup I have the more I enjoy it, especially now that I know my identity and tastes so well. I don’t feel compelled to spend and consume on new things, I know what works and usually it’s keeping things simple! It’s so much better for my wallet, the earth, and my soul. ❤
I’ve been just doing my eyebrows and going to work with a slick back bun and it feels so great. I think the world of makeup or the makeup community has shifted in general it’s not 2016 anymore. I decluttered my whole makeup collection over the past 3 years I mainly have just the necessities And occasionally I’ll try a viral product or try a new trend
It's liberating to embrace your own bare face. I feel like this shift for me has also made me appreciate the enhancements that just a tiny amount of makeup can do. I'll be working toward decluttering my collection over these next few months. In a lot of ways, it doesn't even feel like mine anymore. I'm excited to see what I'll think is important for me to keep, especially after completing this no buy year.
I'm a verrrry recent subscriber. I used to be big into makeup around 2012 to 2018 or so and kinda fell off as I got overwhelmed. I have been trying to get back into it but holy shit, the market is so incredibly over saturated. I get major overwhelm and decision fatigue from all of the choices. You look a lot like me and was excited to see what things you recommend but more than that, I appreciate your realness. And you saying we can just buy drugstore products. So glad you are taking care of yourself! Excited to see different content even if that's not what I came here for, you just seem super cool.
Excited where you will take your channel. I still watch my fave beauty RU-vidrs but I also haven’t felt pressured in any way to buy more than what I have right now. I’m def open to other types of content you will be creating. I love seeing people in their own element and enjoying what they create. 💕
Christine, thank you for always being supportive of me and this channel❤️ it really means so much to see your comment under this video! I’m excited to start sharing more :)
Thank you for sharing, Chessie. I resonate with some of the topics you touched on. I especially resonate with not feeling comfortable wearing a full face/beat of makeup. I wore a lot more makeup than I usually wear to a wedding a couple weeks ago and did not feel 100% confident in myself with it on. I feel like my makeup style may be “boring” too but it’s what I like! I’m looking forward to seeing different types of content from you soon. ❤
Welcome to the club. Makeup burnout is real and of course, it's still fun to get ready, but fiending over the latest in launch doesn't happen anymore. I'm looking forward to thrift videos.
I really thought you were leaving youtube and got hella sad for a sec. I feel so similarly and especially dislike how many beauty content creators gatekeep the eff out of products like its their SSN. I unfollowed all of the makeup brands/artists and i wanna see if that reduces my fomo. I can't wait to see what new videos you bring out ♡
Tbh I really thought I might! It was either I had to leave or I had to pivot and I felt like I owed it to myself to try something new. I felt like I couldn’t come back with new content unless I got this off my chest and I honestly feel so good now. Unfollowing people/brands was so liberating for me. You will absolutely not feel fomo and soon realize that none of that even matters. It was really eye opening for me!
you can really tell from this video that you've put so much thought into this decision. i totally believe you're going to make the right decision no matter what for yourself and this channel!
I love this video, Chessie! As an acne prone person, I recently realized that nearly all of my makeup has acne causing ingredients, which was absolutely wild to find out. I went to Walmart and got only what I needed and have been happy ever since. I no longer feel like I'm missing out, and I'm no longer searching for the next best product. I don't think I'll ever stray from drugstore and only what I need ever again!
I feel the same! Actually that's why I'm exploring ethical brands, clean beauty (vegan and eco certified brands, etc.) and buiyng way more less than a few years ago. I'm totally into smaller brands (like Avril, Ere Perez...) and happier with my makeup and with the people I'm supporting.
Fully support you on this Chessie🤍 I started consuming a lot since I joined tiktok and started creating content on there. I think what feels most authentic is making yourself the niche versus solely identifying as a beauty creator these days. I started making my content more about myself and my life versus strictly makeup since I’m no professional I just love the process of GRWM videos. I would LOVE to see more vlog style content, book content, and thrifting hauls/vlogs! Literally right up my alley. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for you 🤍🫶🏼
The power of TikTok’s influence is scary!! I’m glad you find your niche. GRWM videos are so fun to watch and create. They’re more intimate than reviews or tutorials. Thank you for the support❤️
Thanks so much for this video. So honest and all of what you said resonates with me. During the pandemic, mainly from watching RU-vid at home, I became so so much more of a consumer than I had ever been and those habits sadly have stuck. Prior to I owned just what I needed. Now? Many MANY lifetimes worth. Trying to slowly get out of and return to who I was before (with of course the help of a phenomenal therapist lol). Anyway, this is the first video I’ve watched of yours and so happy I stumbled upon. Look forward to watching more (I do love thrifting also!). Cheers.
So happy to have you here❤️ I know you didn’t ask for advice, but a great step for you would be to unfollow the brands and influences that are bringing you down. It was the best thing I did for myself when I started realizing I really needed change. Good luck with your journey!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I feel inspired by your viewpoint on make up and agree that we really don't need that much! I hope you continue filming and vlogging though. I always enjoyed your travel/house/garden/food videos and can't wait to see how your channel grows for the better xxx
It can be fun at times! The expectations are quite high and pressure to buy and have excess is very present. I love that you’re putting your focus more into your collection!
I feel the same, at this point I just enjoy from a distance. I feel like maybe lifestyle videos would be more your style these days. You can still show your makeup luv in lifestyle videos and chit chat with us about it no matter what type of videos you do b/c most of us have that common interest, I think lol, especially if we’re still subscribed. Either way an upload from you is always refreshing to see. 🍁🧶🍂🍃🪴
I was just wondering about you. I was inspired by one of your previous videos to not throw away a powder blush that was almost done… instead I crushed the outer rim and put alcohol and repressed it and it worked great 👍
I love that!! Cleaning up your makeup is a great way to give it another life and feel better about using it! Sometimes we discard or push old products aside when they really just need a little TLC.
I still love makeup too and love trying things, new techniques and etc. but brands are releasing the same things over and over. Competing with one another. I’ll probably always be a Rare Beauty Stan because I actually do love their products but if I find an Elf or L’Oréal product I like, I’ll stick to it. Because moneys tight and other priorities are set. I would love to see thrifting videos, estate sale finds, and other content you have in mind. Doing and sharing what you love is so important to your mental and physical health.
Yes we’ve seen the same things over and over again! My top 3 higher end brands would be Rare Beauty, Kosas and Tower 28. I’ll probably continue purchasing from them but really only a few staples. The drugstore truly has everything I’d need or want. Thank you for the support as always Becky :) always appreciate seeing your comments!
Since the pandemic i do the bare minimum now w makeup when i do wear it ...eyebrows ,mascara, concealer under my eyes and dark spots ..glowy blush ...now for the most part im bare faced (spf and lipgloss) and im more comfortable this way then i was before the pandemic...embraced my "flaws" ❤
Also, I have geared towards only using a tinted spf (I have used revision but super goop has been great on a lower budget)…. And I’ll do eyebrow and mascara and that’s it for my every day.
I felt this way at the point when offices, facilities that closed down during covid opened up again. I just saw no point, Ive been a goblin for too long to care. But im slowly getting into the rythym of it again. This time around, ill just go with a capsule collection.
I think even doing what u r doing now with your get ready routine will still b cool to watch. I’m almost 50 and I don’t wear a lot of make up either. Do what makes u happy.
Do you watch shawna ripari? She has similar sentiments. I resonate with you both so much! I am 25 and got into makeup in 2014 when it all got started. I had to buy lots of new items and try different things even if I didn’t previously wear that category (ex: eyeshadow). now don’t feel tempted and want minimal makeup. And I’m left with a ton of makeup that’s not my style. I’m working towards using it up and passing it along. Love hearing your thoughts!
@@chessiedomrongchai I recommend her videos! She just made a video called, “my makeup era is over”. I recommend that video! And prior to that she made lots of videos about contentment and to use what you own
I love random topic GRWM! I understand completely what you say, except that I love bold colours so makeup still have a grip on me as an artistic outlet. Btw, do you watch Hannah Louise Poston? She's amazing if you want to watch some content about thoughtful beauty and consumerism. She first made videos in 2018 I think when she did no buy year, and her content a couple of years after that were extremely unique and instrumental in shaping my relationship with beauty.
I think that’s amazing though. Makeup was such a creative outlet for me and in some ways I wish it still was. I don’t watch her but I always see her videos recommended! I love that she’s out here having those types of conversations.
Superrrrrrrrrr proud of you. I feel like you’ve been feeling this way for so long and this is such a bold and honest statement- mostly for yourself. Just being true to who you are. 🤍🫶🏻 I really love that so much. I, myself, have geared more into my skincare not necessarily makeup. Love it and keep doing what makes you happy and feels like your truth!
