A song from Raw Sienna, the 1969 album. Written by Chris Youlden. Chris Youlden - Vocals Kim Simmonds - Lead Guitar Lonesome Dave Peverett - Lead Guitar Roger Earle - Drums Tone Stevens - Bass Bob Hall - Keyboards
My favorite Savoy Brown album, I would even go so far as to put it in my Top 10-15 a albums of all time. Chris Youlden is incredible as always, one of the best bluesy voices ever! He reminds me of a British version of Tony Joe White who brings out that Southern blues/swamp sound in his voice!
Perhaps a bit of Long John Baldrey as well! Love British blues, especially the early stuff. Mayall, Peter Green, Jack Bruce etc. Savoy Brown is definitely in that category also. Cheers!
Absolutely Savoy Brown when i was shaping my blues brain. In the caves ov Nevada, some Guy was playin : “Stay while the night is young” off this album deep in the dark cave. Just him , his guitar , small fire. I never heard of SB. Saw them...somewhere in another town, or place.
My God!Last time I listened to this tune is about 40 years ago!!But AS soon as it started I recognized it!!Wow!!I used to listen randomly for hours in my room and play guitar all day long!!Thanks for posting!!
Of course not. Greeny is the standard by which all white bluesmen should be judged...period. My comment re: Youlden and Burdon was strictly regarding UK blues vocalists. Green was the complete package before his ill-fated exposure to bad LSD in Germany.
Joining the general discussion to say that while I have personally tired of nearly everything Burdon did, there was an "embarassment of (British blues) riches" in the early '70s: Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, Savoy Brown, Free, Rory Gallagher, Humble Pie... never mind what would happen if we were to jump across the Atlantic.
Kim Simmons damn, one of the best solos out there and in 1970 no less.I'm so glad I was born when I was musically. I'd paint my nails black too if I had to listen to the crap that's being cranked out nowadays and hiphop is just sampling songs from back in the day anyway,
Oddly enough Im 21 years old, I used to listen to this album religiously, when I was like 16, 17. I just remembered them today. I don't know how I forgot them.
Yeah buddy, The Electric Theatre was great! I saw so many great bands there for, yes, 5 bucks! Amazing times for music. we'll never see an era like that again.
Nice to hear again! It's good to know they are still around (Michigan) & you can still get to see them,(even if they don't have Chris Youlden) they still manage to pull off a decent show.
40 years later, successful, prosperous, healthy , and happy, i can still say my 1st. trip on lsd, with savoy brown guiding me, was the single coolist thing i've ever done. thanks for the memories.
@kevincanwait You know I grew up with this music myself since I was about 7 and I was loving it then and I am 24 now and still do. My Pops was watching these guys just about every time they would come through Detroit. I'd have to say this album and A Step Further are my favorite albums they put out there. That's probably because they were the two I listened to the most. I do not think you will ever find another Chris Youlden. Well you keep on rockin and I'll do the same. Take care
This is no doubt a blues album unmatched with singer Chris Youlden who sounds like a Blackman but even better than that, can whale like a Whiteman. I was around at the time when this album came out, Raw Sienna. I listened to the whole album and never ever got tired of hearing every song. I love these in particular: When I Was A Young Boy, I’m Tired, Needle n Spoon. Still listen to it endlessly. The words or so sobering
Thank you for posting this. THIS is why I love this site. Savoy Brown happened to be largely lost in the mix back in 69. What a fucking year. I heard them. Yes I did. Still do. Great stuff. Thanks!
Saw these guys in Berkeley back in the day. They were so awesome. Lonesome Dave had left for Foghat already, but Kim Simmonds could still bring it on. Love this band. Kim Simmonds had an album out new like 3 or 4 years ago.
hard to remember the exact year, they were billed with Fleetwood Mac, 68 or 69, anyways Fleetwood cancelled, and Long John Baldry replaced Mac. I was so wanting to see Peter and Jeremy but oh well. Savoy came out and kicked ass, with go-go girls running out to dance next to whichever guitarist was lead licking. They played all my favorites. Have seen they since as Fog Hat, and bassman have even played my 69 Jazz bass in 71 while in Hawaii for a show as Fog Hat.
This tune is a good example of the great music we've sadly departed from in exchange for so much of the homogenized, pre-conceived, soulless, corporate format that people have been convinced to accept as artistry. Very sad indeed.
@tuxguys ,,The drumming...? I'll go for that.. 1st listened to this at school in '70-'71 and never really noticed that till you mentioned it.. Nice one..!
Yes you are absolutely right! And do you remember Tull tried to come back after Zeppelin and do another set, but they couldn't pull it off. After Zeppelin, there was no where to go but down.
@kevincanwait yeah I got to see them 3 times at Fillmore West the first time Chris Youlden was with them the last 2 Dave was doing the vocal both versions of the band were great and a much better live band. Vinyl never gave them the justice their live sound did.
That was July 19 1969 Support by Savoy Brown, The Litter and Jethro Tull. Here is Zep set list 1. Train Kept a Rollin' 2. I Can't Quit You Baby 3. Dazed And Confused 4. You Shook Me 5. How Many More Times 6. Communication Breakdown
I love sexy style he sings with. Definitely more rich and full than the punk of the Sex Pistols. Nancy used to hate me for watching that movvie, Sid and Nancy. Hey, Sid died when he was 21. I think but he never made music like Savoy Brown, or Kim Edmunds, he wasan anarchist and a crazed punk. I am amazed to still be alive. Got to get back to the ocean and get diown on my hands and knees and thank the Master of the universe for being patient with me.Ditto, Charles
@bagwandave Stan Webb's Chicken Shack (Stan also was a member of Savoy Brown on the Boogie Bros album) he's another great Bluzman from England who never got his Props....
saw Savoy Brown at the Fillmore West as well, and several more times, ending with the Street Corner Talking lineup - which only had Kim from the original band. Still a fine group., Someone mentioned Led Zeppelin. Imho, you dont put Savoy Brown in their category. SB and Ten Years After and Peter Green's FM were Great bands, but they were all about the music..like Cream was. Zep was about the music and The Live Show.. as were the Who and Hendrix..and Jethro Tull were. way bigger than life, live.
Anyone know where the Roundhouse is? Oh yes, spent a lotof time there on Sundays around the same time as you, but missed Savoy Brown. Brilliant place, couldn't get away with what went on there now though, without being leapt upon by horders of meatheaded security jobsworths in yellow jackets. You must o remember Midnight Court at the Lyceum, and the Temple in Wardour Street. As for not hearing any of this live, give it a couple more years when my guitar playing improves and you just might.
