Hell, I'm 63 yrs. old and have been a huge Savoy Brown fan since the mid 60's. Dropped into a bar on Battery Street in San Francisco in the late 70's and to my surprise, there was the band performing. They shredded that night!
Just my opinion and screw ya if ya don't agree but the late 60s and early 70s produced some of the most original bands and some of the best music ever. Period.....
@@smwrbd He played Detroit pretty much every year right up to his death either billed as Kim Simmonds or Savoy Brown. You could usually catch him at The Magic Bag on Woodward in Ferndale. Saw him my self 100's of times from the 70's to just before Covid.
I always wanted to see Savor Brown back in the seventies, but never did. They played at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano in 2019 and I went and saw them. I'm glad I did, the show was good. I bought a Savoy Brown T-Shirt and always get lots of compliments when I wear it. I didn't know that Kim passed. Sorry to hear that. Rest in Peace!
@@smwrbd I think he had a great range of blues, boggie and classic, I hear at times some bo diddly influence. Ted nugget just reversed that bo style, love the riff to strangle hold, awesome tune my favorite from uncle Ted 😀
Saw Savoy Brown in the 70’s at Detroits Cobo Arena, years later in the late 80’s and 90’s got the privilege to see them in a small club many times, Kim Simmonds was a great guitarists and entertainer, greatly missed.
First song I heard by them, back in the late 1960s. Caught them at Madison Square Garden opening for Deep Purple -- Incredible band(s). RIP Kim Simmonds.
I discovered Savoy Brown in the late 60s and was probably the only one in my group of music aficionados who appreciated their chops. The group was probably the first "extended" track artists (along with the Dead). Kim, thanks for the hours of musical enjoyment!
It's a DAMNED SHAME there isn't more live video of the original line-up. Video tape was in it's infancy, cassettes being introduced in 1971. Chris Youlden has such a strong influence.
I'm 60 and i often say that i don't need the trash they call "music" these days, because i keep discovering "new" music from the old days, bands and songs that i didn't know, and many i knew but never listened to. And here i am again, i can't believe i had never heard of this band -not even the name. Music from the 60's and 70's will live on, long after the trash of present day is totally forgotten. Of course there are some great bands and musicians these days, but what gets promoted by "the system" is just mucus.
I saw them in Denver 1973 opening for ZZ Top - no body would give up demanding more encores... Then ZZ Top showed up and blew the roof off... Blue Oyster Cult was the opening band, then SB, and finished with Zz - goddamn that was a night
Having Savoy Brown on 8-Track, or anything, doesn't make you old...it makes you cool. My first 2 8-Tracks I owned were FOGHAT-RockNRoll Outlaws & LYNYRD SKYNYRD-Second Helping. Thanks Mom & Dad. I just listened to Savoy Brown-Blue Matter on Cd today. No matter the format...keep it alive! Rock on....
One of my favorite songs back in the early 70's. This live version is e-x-p-l-o-s-i-v-e to say the least. Kim Simmonds is still one of the best blues players around today.
I was lucky enough to see them in Seattle, at the Paramont. They were headlining, with Fleetwood Mac, and Long John Baldry. It was a great show, and I think it was even broadcast live locally by one of the Seattle radio stations. Great night, and great memory’s. I didn’t realize how lucky I was to have all the great music around. Still have all my albums!
This is my FAVORITE song by Savoy Brown!! I alway loved the band's name. So cool. Takes me back to my wild & crazy era of youth. Damn it was fun!!!👍🏼✌🏼
A very well put together heavy blues song that builds to a cresendo with an abrupt ending that really hits you like a freight train. Great song, from a very talented band.
I must say I love this version, despite people complaining it doesn't kick ass. It has the menacing, hypnotic groove that the original 1972 studio version has... Well done!!
I listen to this great song a lot, almost daily. It will be played at my final gathering of friends. Through my 64 yrs of life I have been graced with the good fortune to see Kim S. and Savoy Brown a few times. Last time I was a guest of the group at Woodstock ILL. got to see them free...
I was turned on to SB by my Mom in 1969, at age 10. 4 years ago I saw SB live for the first time in a small tavern in Annapolis,MD. Since then Ive seen them at the blues fest in Hagerstown,MD. and again at the Rams Head tavern in Annapolis,MD. Kim Simmonds is an incredible guitar player, and a very friendly guy. After his shows he gives autographs, photos, and takes time to talk to fans.
ONE OF THE BEST BANDS EVER, THEY NEVER GOT THE RECOGNITION THAT THEY DESERVED, DOES ANY ONE KNOW IF THEY WERE INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME ? R.I.P. LONESOME DAVE, AND THE REST , COUSIN FIGEL
If they haven’t been THEY SHOULD BE, while a lot of frankly crappy bands have been. To me the word “Rock-n-Roll” means something, (& the Go Gos ain’t it!) But I digress… I’m with you, Savoy Brown is way up there in the Pantheon of great music. Just listened to Looking In on vinyl. Ah brilliant
You must be joking right? That so called Hall of Fame is complete bullshit... A long list of great bands who have been snubbed in favour of rap and hiphop shite.
Try getting your local classic rock station to play something like this instead of from their same ol', lame ol' top 40 dreg sheet. Savoy Brown, Humble Pie, Head East, Montrose, Little Feat, Canned Heat, The Night Hawks, James Gang, Mott the Hoople,, Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash, Faces, Grand Funk Railroad,.....Muthas ain't gotta clue.
+Brian Bois Gilbert Hi: Just heard this 2 days ago on our local WMNF.org (you can listen online). They play all this and more AND lots of independent stuff. I think you might like.
i got out of the army in 1971, discovered these guys and many others...status quo, sopwith camel, molly hatchet, etal....along with drugs, drugs, drugs....what a joyous time....pot, mescaline, shrooms, quality acid....partied for about 10 years, then got straight, grew up, formally educated myself....this band and others helped me become the 72 year old man i now am....thanks dudes
I'm 140 years old without any arms or legs but I still listen to sad boy Brown and drink and smoke and do everything else all you youngsters only wish you could. Not really, and I'm not going to he'll either LOL! Rock and roll
I saw them at the Fillmore East in early '71 and I saw them again on Saturday at the Throckmorton Theater in Mill Valley. It's a different band every time, but always KILLER!!! See these guys! Your ears and soul will thank you. And Kim is a very nice guy.
I was lucky enough to have seen these guys in the late 70s in Germany at an club when I was in the service. Even the pre-music before they played was great but SB blew me away. Definitely one of the best shows I've ever seen.
i got the "Blue Matter" album since... 1974 ..! and it still kick me all the times .. was my first Blues album !... then Electric Ladyland for sure !!!!!!!
Excellent. First saw SB in Erdington in 1968, then in NYC in 1998. Finally, saw them do this in the World Trade Center courtyard 10 days before 9/11. Got to speak to Kim Simmonds. Great, unasumming guy. Thanks for posting.
Saw these guys at the Hollywood Palladium October 1972 along with Uriah Heep and Hemlock. I think it was my first live concert. I can still remember standing on the floor absolutely blown away by all three bands that night. This album had just been release earlier that year. I can remember it like it I was standing there right now. Great memories.
I saw them with Fleetwood Mac around that time in the "Kinsmen" Fieldhouse in Edmonton, Alberta. Both groups were excellent. FM were in their Danny Kirwan etc, incarnation (Bare Trees, Future Games), my favourite.
A long time ago when I was a teen I saw a list by my Church of forbidden books and music. Hellbound train was on the list. So being a rebel at heart I listened to the song. Been a fan of Savoy Brown ever since.
U-TUBE keeps me up LATE at night...finding all my old music is like connecting w/a long, lost friend that I thot I'd never get t chance to hear again...and WHEN I want it! but U-TUBE cured that. Old but not gone yet-like me. 70 next month+hearing MY music again keeps my heart young.
Hellbound train was my first rock album. It was in 1972. Nowadays, i'm listening to godsmack, all of their 5 albums are in my playlist. Four decades and still rockin'.
This SO GOOD. Real passion and musicality. We were lucky to be young when this music came out and lasted from the mid -sixties to early seventies. Shows what a mockery fame can be when you see what is popular compared to these artists.
I’ve been going back to the 60’s music era a bit myself lately. McKendry Spring’s “Flying Dutchman”, It’s A Beautiful Day’s “White Bird” are amongst my faves!
Add these to the list: Buffalo Springfield’s “Bluebird” - the long version that was never on an album but it’s here on UTube! The Doors “The End”. Such good tunes!!
+ Davebritbrat . Thank you for uploading this awesome live Music . I have listened to Savoy Brown since the early seventies and never knew what they all looked like . This is a classic live rock performance !
I'm 32 and have heard a lot of music and enjoy a wide variety of music. I just heard this song today on a local Pittsburgh Station (WDVE). Now I have some new music to download.
i was a freshman in college '71/'72 and i had to have Hellbound Train..i bought it at Sam Goody....every time we went out this song put us in the party mood
vl...Did some traveling to see a lot of Rock bands back in the 70's but never had the chance to see Savoy Brown. That was a great decade to travel and see many legendary Rock bands play some very original music.
when i came home, from the army i did my first orange barral or suger cube i laid in the floor all nite, watching a cob web sway back and forth some of you probably remerber the 70,s the good old days!!!
+Roger Brooks ,I really wonder my brother in arms if the 70's really was that great. We fought and died for what?Sure it was drugs and more drugs till about 82 then just a blackhole till now.WTF dude.I dont know but i love this music
+Jon Bennington Are you guys really preaching drugs? There are fucking kids on here, damn. Irresponsible douchebags.. Have fun with your drug-themed midclass lifes.
Are you an idiot? Drugs are bad for your kids? Then don't let them near TV or the Web where Big Pharm rules the day with drugs worse than any of the drugs referenced in Hippie days like LSD, Weed, Peyote, or Mushrooms. You hypocrites make me laugh.
I KNOW EXACTLY WHERE I WAS FIRST TIME I HEARD THIS, BLASTED 18YR. OLD AND LOST IN THIS SONG. LONG TERM MEMORY OK .NO SHORT TERM, ONLY OF TOM PETTY AND THE HEEP.
Its been a life time for me since i have heard xavoy brown, ten years after, the band, lou reed and countless other bands. This is the music of my youth .. Fucking love it. Makes me happy. Takes awav all of pain i live with ever day of my life.. Never thougt i would get hurt so bad that i would never work again. If you are still working , be thankful. For every shift you come home in one peice.
your not the only one beat up by a hard life of drugs and bad decisions my brother! I entered college in 72 then started dropping acid. Dropped out...of course! Years of hard work, dope, women, then several failed marriages and children left me with a shattered. spine and a morphine habit. But, ya know what? For all the dumb shit and heartache, I wouldn't change a thing! Peace
