I'm getting a new (used?) car | Help me choose!
It's time to get ourselves a second car, the big question is do I go with my head or my heart? I guess a lot of people go through a similar process, especially for a second car - so I thought I'd share mine!
Please try and watch it through to the end - it's a big help if you do!

I killed 3 heart cars in 4 years - one squashed by a tree in a storm, the other two had consistent engine & electrical problems - good money after bad. I had to buy a car with my head this time around. Despite wanting to hate it I forced myself to buy a 7 year old Honda Jazz that had only done 12k miles. After 6 months of ownership I realised I loved it. I'm coming up to 3 years of ownership, and it is 10 years old, but it has been ultra reliable. My biggest issue was I needed to save money for a new roof on my house. With the old cars I was always spending what I'd saved up on car repairs rather than roof repairs. It is wonderful living without the stress of wondering what is going to go wrong next, and this far outweighs any pleasure I derived from the money hemorrhaging heart cars.

I'm not going to go on and on (for once haha) but I will say this. GO WITH YOUR HEART! Life is too short and the last 8 years of hardship Jackie and I have been through have taught me one thing. I first thought of a 4-year-old Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoë, or Seat Mii when you gave your brief. They are available with sensible mileages within your budget. There are also a few electric Corsas. Much better than the £4-£5k cars you were considering that were older. For older autos, they say buy a torque converter. I know Kia and Hyundais are good, also the CVT in Honda and Toyota is reliable. I think the VW Up might by from Cyprus - tends to be Japanese cars or classics that are imported from Japan. European cars tend to come in from Cyprus (and Ireland).

I've been thinking of a van for a while just as I can get my bikes in the back when I go to the forest. I would go with your head at this moment in time, hopefully the business will get better and better and when it does you can then allow your heart to make the choice and you will feel you earned it. Also you can put a few vinyls on the side of it and advertise the business...if you make them magnetic you can add and remove as needed. Cheers Jim.

A bit left field but VW are doing some stonking (and loss making) offers on approved used ID5s at the moment which caught my eye. On a 3 year pcp they are doing 0% finance, deposit contributions (Inchcape offering £1000) and come with at least 2 years warranty and free servicing. Remember these are £55k new with incredible spec if you get a Style/Tech/Max trim. You can but 3k down and pay less than £200 a month and can hand it back in a few years if you’re worried about depreciation. I guess these were overpriced to begin with according to the reviews but had I not got a Cupra born recently, I would have seriously considered an id5. And remember it’s an Audi Q4 underneath and charging is cheap on a flex tariff.

Goy to say i don't love it the same way at all but it is very capable and will save me aome money for a bit. Looking at your requirements, a small electric car through your business seems to make the most sense for you. A 10-15 year old small european built automatic ICE car is a huge risk in terms of garage bills and downtime likely creating a load of inconvenience and frustration. The Electric Vehicle Man has recently videoed a review of his Seat Mii and raved about its driving experience and efficiency. I wouldnt have thought you would need a huge range for your second car? I am not biased by the way, we have 2 petrol cars and 1 diesel in our household, but would certainly consider a secondhand electric car as a second car when we come to change. One of our cars is an MX5. Its great fun but the the times when we can actually use it is limited due to the need to carry people or "stuff". Or its just raining in the UK summer!

My wife had a 63 plate ice VW Up from new. It was very good, if a little gutless. She switched to the e-Up two years ago and it is brilliant in every respect. The 0-62 time may be slow by comparison with other EVs, but the 0-30 acceleration is terrific and the extra weight of the 32 KWH battery has improved the handling no end. One pedal driving makes it feel like a go-kart and it is also very easy to park with as the spec includes an integrated reverse camera. It's ideal as a town car and even copes well with the connected potholes that are called roads in East Dorset. Get one of those, or the Seat/Skoda derivatives.

I enjoyed watching this and the thought process you were going through. I am in a similar dilemma, as I really need to change my car - an Audi TT which I ordered new. I have no idea what car to choose as I am elderly but still a sporty girl at heart! Although a Granny, I don’t want a Granny car! I like cars that I feel good in, so something like a Honda Jazz is out of the question. You mentioned a BMW 3 Series?? I think my similar like minded friend has one of those. I have some money to buy but am considering leasing. I have kept a spreadsheet of all my expenditure from new (not Road tax or insurance) and looking at the depreciation I think it will be worth my while. Oh, the decisions!

Insanely efficient and not at all bad to drive daily. I came out of an MG4 which is a very, very easy car to live with (a lot to be said for that and never really pitched by RU-vidrs when they review). Another good one, Jim I'd go head. Citigo is the best option. Been keeping an eye on used EVs for a while as they keep falling in price. e208 takes my eye , but they're over £11k still. Corsa-e is slightly less. So I quite know that market. Under 9k. How big do you want to go? Skoda Citigo too small? Leaf? Kia eSoul if you need bigger?

What could you get? A much newer than most of those cars - Peugeot 308 for £7k, a Skoda of some variety usually bomb proof…or what my mate does which is buy a sub £500 car with an MOT and run it for a year or until it explodes and do the same again.

I think you're wrong on the Boxster. I have had a 996 for 10+ years, servicing is every 2yr, major-minor-major-..., not annual. Apart from engine, everything on that generation of 911/Boxster are easily serviceable at indy garages. Most of the usual parts have OEM supplies at prices no more expensive than Mini, BMW. And for that generation, the Porsche autobox is old style torque converter made by Merc. It is bomb proof and only needs ATF change at 84k miles. I also own en eUp, best car in my fleet, 5.9 m/kwh averaged over 12 months. The skoda version doesn't have heated windscreen, reverse camera, and optional parking sensors. Seat Mii electric probably best value of the 3 variants.

Definitely not a Mini as not reliable. I'd say it's between the Yaris and the electric van. Yaris will hold its value and be super reliable. I've owned a Yaris for 12 years with no issues, it's the newer shape eCVT auto with the 1.3 petrol engine. Great video BTW.

Im in a similar position only a little more hair😅 the used car prices are still high in my opinion....going between newer car with high mileage versus an older model with less ?? Its a minefield of 💩buying an older car.......ive been looking at VW Tiguan/ Passat estate with DSG as long as they have service history of the DSG service being every 40k.....then viewing the car trying to spot any future problems, i suppose you can buy an extended warranty?? Be interesting to see this one through.....your selected car being viewed and scrutinized etc.....great honest video as i thought you used £50 notes as loo paper !! 😂

You need a Lexus 😎 You can get a nice GS or IS for 5k, reliability even on the older ones is top notch if they’ve been looked after, and they come with all the bells and whistles. Or, how about PCP through the business on an electric UX300e? They go for £20k outright now, so a PCP deal might be good value? Ok, they’re not the best EV in terms of range and charging speed, but they’re a superb car to drive.

2k to service a boxster? Watch a few video tutorials and they are easy to service yourself.2 to £300 every other year.No one with a 15 plus year old boxster is going to take it to a main dealer for servicing.will admit suspension arms etc are more costly than other brands but they'll last about 20 years, people generally don't do so many miles in one.tbf I'm retired so not likely your target audience.. How much does it cost to lease a car for a few months? About 2k? Keep up the good work 👍👍👍 Enjoy your channel..

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru I checked the engine number before purchasing..It has the larger internal bearing so unlikely to fail.Registered march 2006 so lower tax band and it's the 2.7 so no bore score issue I've had it for 9 years . Daily drove for 7 and with a little preventative maintenance (put on a heavy duty water pump ) no problems. It was 10 years old when I purchased it for £8000, less than half the price a 10 year old boxster today.Even adjusted for inflation how does that make sense? Oh yes that van is very cheap motoring (if you can call a EV motoring) 😜 Good luck with your new car search.I bought a little Kia Picanto Monday of Facebook marketplace 2010 70,000 miles,£1000 Lovely condition and was tempted to Mike Brewer "old out Ur aaand"
