I'm Getting SICK of These Clueless Contractors...

Hey Gang! We're on an Emergency Project today. Our Mom/Grandmother fell and broke her hip, she's in the hospital all fixed up and recovering well! But when she gets back home, we don't want her to have to step over a massive tub in order to get clean. So we're ripping out her existing tub/shower and building and installing a curbless shower accessible to wheelchairs and walkers. It's going to be super nice and we're excited to surprise her with this upgrade. Along the way, we find some pretty frustrating building "techniques" that result in rotted wood, which if we didn't catch now, could have been devastating to someone down the road. We see this all too often, and manufacturers make it too easy to do a good, clean job for people to skimp on the important details.
We're excited for this project and we'll also keep you up with the main one! Thanks for watching gang and we'll see ya in the next one!

I appreciate that you leave in the "nasty surprises" that you find when you're working. A huge component of fatiguing in house repair for me is how every little thing turns into huge projects because the handyman that had his hands in before me did something stupid and there's always more that needs replacement than you planned. I appreciate seeing those moments, of "oh no, I hope there isn't rot under here" because that is relatable.

Yep. A bunch of homeowners and/or contractors doing work in a house over the years and not doing things properly because they either want to save a quick buck or they simply didn't know any better can cause some serious problems in the long run for a house. And when people are planning on selling in the near future and don't care one bit if their work will last for years to come because by then it's the next homeowners problem

Most of the time it is not from improper installation. It is improper design. Any door with a wooden jamb and no roof above needs a screen door. the seal fails between jamb and sill lets water in and rots everything under. sliders is the only door i would install with a roof.

I got asked by a slumlord to “Fix two tiles” in a basement suite bathroom. and got yelled at after with two fingers I pulled a 3 foot x 3 foot section of tile and sopping wet drywall into the tub. The problem was that the ancient taps were dripping off the back of the assembly for years and years. Had to reframe the whole partition wall between the tub and the kitchen. And of course, the 220v for the stove was on that wall, down at the floor. I demo’d the whole wall by hand, no tools required, everything was so rotten.

Dang that sounds really bad. I demo'ed a shower once where the subfloor and joists we're complete gone underneath. The renter lady didn't want any issues with the landlord so she kept quiet about the issue. It was kind of scary tearing out the pan cause it was being held up by rotted wood and the cement itself lol. And that on a raised foundation. Oh and the studs to the exterior wall we're completely shot too!

@@lustfulvengance Bit of a weird tip, but you might be able to find certain forms of fungus that are anti-fungal (yes, you read that right) and treat wood that way. I've been with a remodeling company for 8yrs. We focus mostly on showers/tubs and surrounds. We add extra/taller flange to our shower bases and tubs. Your mom's tub is evidence of WHY! You have a good point about tile, but one way to fix that is to keep it dry with good airflow, light and people who care enough to dry it off with an old towel. In most cases, that is unlikely to happen.

This project is probably already done, but if it isn't, I'd STRONGLY recommend an opening wider than three feet into the shower. In fact, I'd leave the entire opening there. Three feet is barely wide enough to comfortably get a wheelchair through, and NOT wide enough to then maneuver it into place for a shower, particularly if someone will eventually need to be in there WITH your mom to help her bathe. Trust me. We went through that with my Dad and were SO glad we left the entire front open because we needed to get right in there with him. Also, be sure to put in both a long vertical AND long horizontal grab bar in there for her in case she needs to transfer to a bench, etc.

Another suggestion: consider using a channel drain. A wheelchair in the center will potentially cover the round drain opening, a channel drain close to an edge might serve better. And the bonus comes from when wheelchair comes out, the excess water that comes with the chair can be squeegeed into the channel near the edge.

This is what happens when you hire based on cost, there is a difference in the finished product with a more expensive contractor. I do not source anything from Home Depot or Lowes only a quality plumbing supply house and that goes for the other materials too. Home Depot used to sell stainless steel braided lines if you needed one and not they sell braided plastic to look like it’s a metal braid, just one example of profit before product. You can follow that throughout the store. The only place they are forced to match in like kind and quality is if it’s a scheduled piece of piping or fitting. I’m in business for 45 years and that’s because I ask for the price I want to do a job 100% and that’s the job they get. My wife said in the 45 years she’s heard the messages (left on plenty loud) on the answering machine or answered the phone and took messages, she has never heard a not nice or nasty call ever. This is all from being trained by an old school craftsman who said do it right or don’t do it at all. Never price your job to compete with a hack.

alternately, with the support as close as it sounds like it is, cut those joists out, and put in lower joists.

Another great video, really love the positive attitude you all have. I recently started doing my own bathroom and your videos were amongst the ones I watched to learn.

Pair their information with Schluter RU-vid videos and you will have a wealth of information! I loved the Schluter shower that they did in an earlier episode. Also check out the warranty on a full Schluter system. Can’t be beat! (And if it matters… then I don’t work for the company. I just needed to get the best waterproofing system for my projects and I have no room for error. I discovered Schluter last and after everything I learned about the other products then I found that there was not a second choice for me. It was going to have to be Schluter. I’m just not willing to risk that kind of damage.) I wish you luck!

You are a great son, glad that you and your siblings are taking care of your mother. My wife is next to the youngest of ten and everyone helps mommy. Mommy who is 93 says if one woman can raise 10 kids, surely 10 kids can take care of one old woman.

Love the “rough in” for the old tub drain, looks like mine. Fortunately no mice, cold, or hot air dared pass through.

Not bad water damage. Good to catch it now. Years ago I fixed my parents bathroom which had been built as an addition off the dining room. It was totally rotten and had a poor foundation. I ended up demolishing the whole thing including the foundation and literaly rebuilt it from the ground up. A labor of love. They were more than pleased.

So good to see you doing this for your Mom (or Mum, as we say here in Australia :)) - I've got a small ensuite reno at home to do very soon, built in the early 80's I think. It's been leaking for ages and I'll bet behind my shower wall it'll look like yours. At least we're on a concrete slab. Love your videos!

I love the care and precision you guys put into every project. I wish it would be simpler to find contractors as detailed as you. Idea for a future series; Hiring a good contractor who will sweat the small stuff so you don’t have to.

Nice to have brothers and sisters to help; as an only child I do everything to take care of my mother including updating her bathroom to a shower only before her hip replacement. Walk in showers are a great safety improvement but after her hip, now some years later, she regrets not having a tub to soak in. The tub was an issue before the hip but, to her, not so much after; thinking about now putting a walk in tub.

We bought a house where the tiling around the tub/shower combo was adhered right to drywall (with mastic, of all things) and I cannot stress enough how bad of an idea this is for any would-be renovators. Thank god we were going to renovate the bathroom anyway. I started pulling the tile off the wall and the trim around the window in the shower hadn't been sealed properly (or at all...) nor had the cut-outs for the shower fixtures. Anywhere water COULD get in, it DID, and that drywall was BLACK AS NIGHT and SOFT.

We are remodeling our builder grade home bit by bit! Usually I like to watch multiple videos on something before we attack it, but since finding your channel I feel like you cover so many things so thoroughly that I can attack whatever it is this builder grade granny house throws at us! I am sorry that the build in your mother's bathroom was so poor, but I get the feeling all of your headache is going to help us immensely when we convert our main bathroom tub into a shower stall (we are anticipating water damage as well). So thanks for all the work on this channel!
