As a 14-year-old, I learned the basics of construction. (Plumb, level and square) when we build our house with a family friend who was a pro. At about 30 years old, I helped a group of HACKS build my parents' second home. I ended up in heavy industrial welding/fabrication as a career. No idea if it's too late - having had an elderly parent live with me - as they get to a point where they need assistance in a shower, a hand-held shower head for the Carer to use on the patient, is key! I put both a fixed and 'head on a hose' with a diverter tap. So when she was having a good day she could do it herself and when she had a bad day the carer could shower her.

The hardest part of the job is dealing with ungrateful people. They can't find anything to criticize because you do great work so by making themselves look better they have to find fault in a cigarette butt. Contractors should have a site where they can share information on customers. That way you can avoid those customers in the future. They can do do it themselves and really have a reason to complain when they screw it all up. Too much ego on their part. As a remodeling manager for many years I have seen it all. You guys did a great job.

I would have cut out the sheetrock for the top "plate." that way you have wood to wood framing which is much more shear resistant than having the sheetrock gap, and it makes it really easy to spot where you need the nailer. AND you can pass the nailer up through the hole.

No cast iron, no galvanized water lines, your subfloor is the same stuff you buy at the store today, framing lumber is the same dimensions, no knob and tube wiring, no plaster and lath to demo, the list goes on. As someone who works primarily on 80-110 year old "historic" houses, and has to do a lot of structural work, Im truly jealous. Great video as always though

WALK-IN-TUBS: Please do your homework as they have improved! Just like many, I too was worried about filling and draining issues. I took a chance and ended up getting one installed in my new modular home. If done correctly the issues aren't that bad. Most of these tubs have a hand held shower so you can use it while filling the tub to keep you warm (before getting in the tub, turn on hot water and shower the seat to warm it up or get heated seats). You could also install a heat lamp above it, which was recommended but I opted out with no regret. Make sure your hot water tank is big enough or install hot water on demand where you'll have unlimited hot water. FILLING UP my 70 gallon (Cdn) walk-in-tub took 8 MINUTES in November (probably a bit less in the Summer?) and about 10-11 minutes in Jan-Feb. The reason it takes longer is because the (municipal) water going to my hot water on demand system is colder in the Winter and the hot water on demand system slows down the flow to keep up, so make sure you have a fairly high BTU system. (mine is 180,000BTU) DRAINING the tub ONLY takes one and half MINUTES! Again, do your homework as they don't all drain that fast! I saw one that could drain in 10 seconds! I also noticed that I am not cold when draining as I like hot water therefore, when the water drains, it takes a while to feel the coolness (like coming out of a steam bath). One could also use the hand held shower to keep warm but it would take longer to drain or use the heat lamp. (don't forget that you can't turn on the heat lamp from inside the tub so you might want to figure out a way to turn it on remotely). Some tubs, like mine, have a safety latch so you can't accidentally bump the handle and open the door. THE PROBLEM with these tubs that are installed in hospitals and senior homes is that they are VERY large to accommodate everyone and as STUD PACK mentioned, it takes forever to fill. I have seen some tubs that actually store the water in a tank beside the tub and can fill the tub in one or two minutes. ME: I am a male in my 50s and I have a condition called Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) and am able to walk but not sure of my future so my new house is pretty much ADA compliant and yes I have a curbless shower too which I like much more than my walk-in shower as they have a curb. The tub I finally got was the OASIS by Safety Bath. So far I love it but I find it's missing some things like a power control for the jets/bubbles but I wanted it because the back is reclined AND the seat is angled (other tubs don't have an angled seat) but it can be harder to get out. -------------------------------------- I don't know why I watch your videos as I can't do renos because of my condition but they are so well made and entertaining! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GUYS!!!

I sympathize with crawling into that low-clearance attic, trying to maneuver a drill, screw, and block while lying across joists, backing out blind, etc. At least it wasn't August. :)

Awesome stuff! I like how you framed the recessed floor out, all great ideas. I’m sure those ledgers add some strength back after notching the joist out too. A tip from a non pro - ditch all the blades and get Diablo everything. They cut like butter and last forever. Even when you hit nails with that circular saw. Multi tool, saws, everything. They’re worth it.

I’ve been in the business for nearly 20 years and I still watched the full video. I like that you considered plywood in joist bays to gain more integrity in the framing 👌🏼

Any reduction in strength of the floor joists by reducing their depth is more than compensated for by the members provided to each side to support the floor panels. Love the work you do.
@m.zehner7145
@m.zehner7145 2 года назад
Is that true? I would think that the only added strength related to those members comes from the sheer strength of the screws holding those boards. If the screws break, the boards fall to the ground. Therefore the boards themselves provide no support to fight against gravity, no?
@chillones9574
@chillones9574 2 года назад
@@m.zehner7145 the boards were also extended to the frame of the house on the far end as well for support, but very good questions.

They put ledger boards, if there’s a leak to rust the screws there’s bigger problems.

Your videos have been helpful as we prepare to renovate our bathroom, including a curb-less shower. While we are having professionals do the work, we like to understand the process enough to ask questions as necessary. The pride and care you take in your work is so refreshing. Thanks!

This is really impressive. I can guarantee if you had hired someone to do this they would not have gone squeezing into that tiny space to make it work. You're a good son to take care of your mom in this way!

No joke! I tried to hire a few different builders, and I got the impression that they were thinking, "Not for any amount of money." So, maybe I'll do it. Can I borrow your tools? All I have is a miter saw

I don't know or understand much of what he says. But when, before he starts using the circular saw, he says: "before I start cutting, I'm going to put on my glasses and ear protection", I have the upmost respect for him.

For anyone redoing a bathroom, making the shower future ready is a great idea. It just take a small event for plans to change. If a shower is already ready at the house, it makes the transition that much easier. Great work guys!

Liked and subscribed. This *exact* project is what my parents need in their home, but I don't have the skills to take it on. However, after watching this, when I hire someone to do it, I know I'm going to be armed with the right knowledge to make sure that my parents get a safe and quality walk-in shower. Thank you StudPack! BTW, I love that you've got this as a family affair. A man knows he raised his boys right when they are best friends!

Stud Pack you guys keep rockin' it! Keep up the great videos, great instruction, great tips, AND great "projects". Your remodels are almost always in the "practical" realm for DIY folks: attacking common "problems" that "we" want (or need) to attack also. Your instructional style keeps it moving quickly but still pauses to cover the key details very clearly, not only explaining HOW you do certain things but WHY. Hats off to your editing that blasts through the slow and repetitive stuff!
