in this video, we discuss health & safety and the need to protect your head when working with a gutter vacuum as one day you'll find that loose tile or slate, and it could potentially be fatal or take you out of work with an injury.
when working from the ground and carrying out an overhead task like gutter vacuuming, you need to mitigate risk.
on the job where this happened to me, there were visible risks at the time of surveying the roof while quoting the customer for the job some 2 months prior to me completing the task in hand.
I mostly roof survey with a drone as I'm a registered operator and have years of experience flying rc helicopters, planes, and uavs. However, on the day I arrived to quote, the weather was horrific and a yellow weather warning with 45 mph gusts, so I used my triple extension pulex contico telescopic pole and gopro hero 5 session.
i did a full walk round of the house and saw nothing obvious, fast forward to today I cleaning the rear gutters and gable end then proceeded to the front of the property and just as I finished the dormer the internal corner must of had a broken piece of Marley tile which found it's was propelled by gravity and hit my head.
luckily, I was wearing a Delta hard hat with a chin strap in use. the tile hit the rear of the helmet, and the associated force smashed the rear tension adjuster and broke that piece clean away
I walked away injury free. However, the helmet is now in the recycle box, and I made sure to cut the head webbing supports so it's not possible for anyone else to reuse or wear it.
the customer then mentioned that they heard something move on the roof a week or so ago and now they are aware of a Broken tile that's due to be replaced by a roofer a few days from now.
no matter how silly you may look or what others they think, wear a helmet when working with overhead jobs.
also never stand too close to the building and create the same angle that a ladder would normally be placed at.
After today, I wouldn't recommend this specific Delta helmet as there is evidently a wear spot in the adjusters construction
get yourself a Petzl vertex vent or similar rated helmet with all the appropriate safety marks and classifications
