I took a 5k pay decrease a year from working nightshift to dayshift as a RN. I was getting depressed working nightshift. Totally worth the paycut

My buddy left his high paying job with the airlines due to high stress, got a lesser paying job with the same company, sold his huge house, and bought a nice double wide trailer. He said his overall health has improved because of it.

I make about 15k less per year for a job I love than I know I could be making. I have no debt either so financially the difference is inconsequential.

In my experience, the more money I made, the jobs were extremely boring and the environment was sterile 😒 The jobs that paid less were fun cultures and I had freedom to do what I wanted to do.

Yup, Dave is wrong. Yes, part of salary is what value a person can produce, the other part is how desirable is the actual job. An extremely desirable job, will have lots of people who want, therefor it will pay less. An extremely toxic or stressful job, will have few people who want to do it, therefore that job has to pay more. Bottom line, there is something about every job that nobody wants to do (or at least doesn't want to do all of the time), otherwise there would be people volunteering to do the job for free.

I'm working in a high stress job but with my savings rate for retirement and frugality I hope to be able to work the 2nd half of my career doing what I want as long as it pays the bills instead of running this hamster wheel

The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. I thought a new job was great and I realize I made a mistake. Now I’m having to fight to recover those losses. Granted, I’m not making what he is. If I was and had a partner who was making good money, the situation might be different.

"Why do we always think that to be happy we have to make less money?" Not everyone owns their own business that they love. For most people working is the worst part of their day. It makes sense that they think that WORKING LESS = MORE HAPPY TIME therefore LESS MONEY. Of course this doesn't take into account the long term view of things...

The writer asked how to overcome the feeling and why he was having the resistance to the move. He knows he will be fine, but he doesn't understand why he feels its a bad move. 30-40k a year even when you make over 200k is still a big cut, and we have to keep in mind that he is being asked to take a job by his company that they value less, which is why he will be payed less. He's being offered a position where he does not produce as much value as he is now. The reason (at least one of) work brings joy is because we bring value to our communities. Being put in a less valuable position may be hurting how valuable he sees himself. At a certain point in life, its less about the number and more about knowing that you are doing a good job and increasing your value for yourself and your employer/community and shows growth as an individual

Taking charge of my finances, and getting back on track with new jobs, new apartment with a girlfriend whom I love, and a new attitude towards my own prosperity. You don't have to love Dave (my gf) to love the knowledge and habits he instills in us. Big fan, just wanted to say.

I agree w Dave that you don’t have to take less money, necessarily. However, sometimes for the sake of not losing your mind and your health (cuz it ain’t worth it) you make the adjustments to take less pay with the plan that it’s ONLY TEMPORARY. While taking less pay for less stress you are also searching for or creating your path to get back to that original pay. And it may not come from the same basket, it may be from a side gig

The median household income is 69k, and we have here some dingus worrying about making 200k vs 250k, while the other half also contributes financially, so the household income is around 300-350k. Boo whoo.

My pay got cut during the pandemic but got to work remotely and so at least I had no commuting expenses and lower living expenses because I lived in the country. But now we have to go back to the office and I only got part of the cut back.

Top pay for my area and medical coverage. I could find work that higher pay. But by time pay for up keep on vechical and gas. Medical is worse it be a wash be making same amount and driving further.

With the income this guy and his wife are bringing in, they could ship the teenagers off to very good boarding schools. There are rules, but the rules are not tangled up with teens' need to separate from their parents. It can be way better for everyone.

Independent Introvert, just how do you know? I loved my family, but when we were all overwhelmed with medical issues and aging grandparents moving in and old family conflicts that had simmered for decades that had to be dealt with, i managed to get a scholarship to boarding school for a year and that year saved both my sanity and my academics. I'm grateful to my folks for letting me go, instead of turning me into a factotum, which they could easily have done.
