We're looking forward to the possibility that Apple's going to announce their brand new ARM powered 2021 MacBook Pro on Monday. There's a lot of the excitement, and we think it's due in part to what the outgoing MacBook Pro generation was missing. So let's look back at the last five years of MacBook to understand why we're so eagerly anticipating the new one.

I got a 2017 MBP (no Touch Bar) a few years ago for college after using an older 2012 MBP my high school provided me. It was alright, and I didn't have the major issues with the Butterfly keyboard (thankfully), but it was starting to show its limitations a little bit, especially this year. I moved over to the M1 Air a few months ago, and I've been really happy with it. The battery life is pretty good considering what I do on it (mostly programming stuff, light gaming, and basic tasks), the keyboard is outstanding and feels much nicer than the Butterfly keyboard, and it performs like a champ. I'm not really bothered by the lack of ports, since it's rare for me to have to plug in multiple accessories at a time or use an SD Card (I still do need my dongle, though, for if and when I need to re-flash my Raspberry Pi's OS). It'll be interesting to see what the next-gen MBP will look like, but really happy with the M1 Air I have now.

I was close to selling it a few weeks back in anticipation of getting the new 16" M1X (or whatever it will be called) MBP, but I had a change of heart. For the tasks I use it for, it has enough performance that I would be upgrading to just have the latest and greatest tech. I don't want to adopt that mentality. That all said, converting to USB C was less of a hassle as I did not over rely my local ports in my work, and was for a while able to get down to a 1 cable dock solution for a bit, until I ran into issues with the reliability with the monitor output, leading me to add a separate power connection. I honestly fresh installed Big Sur with an SSD Wipe on this 2017 base model (A1708) and it's performing so much better than it ever did. I have an M1 Mac mini maxed out and I'm impressed this little i5 dual core keeps up.

I like that they added more RAM to this update of Johnathan

I am still rocking the 2012 MacBook Pro with an optical drive! I swapped the HDD for an SSD a few years ago (as this was one of the last models to allow for user-based upgrades). Ever since, it feels like a new computer. I will likely drive this one till it dies, then upgrade to an M1X (or whatever they call it) 16".

I got the last gen of Intel MacBook before they announced the M1, and I've liked the touchbar so far. I often need to type in Japanese and it's super handy for switching that. If there's another way to change my text input, I don't know what it is.

been using a macbook pro 2015 since my 2nd year of high school. currently still using it as my main laptop for university, and I'm in my last year now (5th year in uni). it still works well, but it's slowed down a lot and I'm still using the original battery, which has degraded quite a bit. thinking of upgrading in a couple of years, or maybe when they stop giving this model the newest OS updates.

Usually I'm absolutely pumped for new MacBooks, but I'm really content with my pro 16 from 2019.

I do like my 2020 MacBook Pro (Intel 4-thunderbolt) BUT it's when they finally moved on from the butterfly keyboard and gave us the dedicated esc and power buttons back. I/O could definitely use some help though, the dongle life sucks sometimes. Still appreciate having BootCamp too, a little anxious about upgrading and losing the ability to run Windows if I should need it.

Ive never had any problems with the butterfly keyboard on my 2017 macbook pro. Ive eaten near it, had cats shed near it, took out dandruff near it, still works fine 3 years later.
