She never got to choose. She was donating parts of herself since birth.
@anja6983
@anja6983 4 года назад
But she did choose. Her sister asked her to stop the donations, so she can die... You could clearly see that it wasnt easy on her to say yes to that... This isnt just mother against daughter, its about annas morals and her and her sisters promise ... That poor girl had more on her shoulders than she shouldve had. Wouldve been hard for me to say to my family that i wont do an operation that would save my sister, even if she asked me for that and even if i dont really want to do that... That movie is so complicated

In the book they go more in depth on the reason why they had Anna in the first place: to save Kate. They weren't planning on having another child, but when they realized they could have one that could help save their other child, they went ahead and did it, which makes me feel sick. I understand the need to save your child that is dying, but don't do it at the sake of your other child.

@joanavitorino1436
@joanavitorino1436 4 года назад
@-- I said so long as there's love and RESPECT. For example, having another baby so as to harvest stem cells from a newborn sibiling is a PERFECTLY UNHARMAFUL way of helping a sick child by having another baby, one that you can love as much as the eldest. Donating a piece of the liver, which can grow back - another almost harmful example, which occurs ALL THE TIME. When you go out of your way to sacrifice your youngest's organs and health, that is different. I answered the way I did, because even in the movie they didn't want to harvest the youngest's organs when they had her, that came up later, so let's not judge people so harshly.

Aww, Anna, Kate and Jesse. I think all three felt unimportant, esp Anna. Jesse because he was ignored except if he was acting. Kate, because despite all the focus on her as in the patient, it really wasn't on her as in the person. She wanted to pass on. She wanted her family's agony to stop. You can see this in the scene where she shows her mom the book of all pictures & whatnot that was family outside of her sickness. And then, there's that scene where Kate wants to rest. She's so sick. This movie was a rare case of a better ending than the book. Book basically implied that everything would have been fine had the donation just happened, instead of the moral lesson of letting go/ acceptance. I felt like the twist where she was just doing what her older sister asked of her got undermined in the book with the ending whereas in the movie, the impact had to follow through.
@ccrraazzyyggiirrll
@ccrraazzyyggiirrll 2 года назад
[spoiler] I feel like the book was much more heartbreaking. Immediately after she won the lawsuit for the rights to her body she was involved in an accident and died and her organs were donated because her lawyer allowed them to. She fought so hard only to die in the end and still have to give up her organs. The film ending was arguably better because it felt happier, but the book was so harsh. Personally, I don't care how sick one child might be, no parent has the right to risk the survival and safety of one child to save another. Not the degree that Anna's parents are constantly doing. I mean, it's one thing if a child voluntarily wants to help their sibling, but only if they're old enough to understand the consequences of such things and it's not going to put them in danger. It's quite another to constantly force a child to give up parts of themselves to someone who might not even survive the procedure.

At some point, Sara stopped listening to her family and the doctors when they warned her that the kidney transplant wasn't going to be successful. Even her older sister, Suzanne(Kellyin the film), knew what she was doing was wrong and asked her to let Kate go. Sara refused and her behavior is what lead to her neglecting her family and the strained relationship between her and Suzanne. Heads up, folks. If you ever find yourself in a position where you're being pressured to test if you're a viable candidate for a donation, tell the doctor you're being pressured into it. I know we're supposed to believe that Sara loves Anna but I feel like we've never seen a scene that shows that. I wish they could have had one scene together that showed they were a loving mother and daughter. That scene in the end where they just started at each other didn't count for me.

Reading the book is so much harder. You can really tell from Sara's actions that she does not love Anna for the right reasons or really the way that she should. Its sara making all the choices for Kate and Anna. They are both being abused in many ways through the whole story because Sara is selfish and cant let kate go. It is amazing to me how Anna does not have resentment towards her mother. Sara had no emotional connection to her in the book, only the husband really did.
@ladyfire44
@ladyfire44 4 года назад
Before the verdict, Anna finally told Sara about Kate's wishes to die. While in shock at first, she comes to terms with it and wished that she was told this a while back. Sara soon understood that Anna was only trying to protect Kate because she didn't want their mother being mad at her. She admits she is proud of Anna for standing up for her own rights to her body and make medical decisions. That scene, her death and in Kate's epilogue were the closest Sara has in showing emotional connection to her.

This whole movie broke me. I’m very aware of the transplant world as my dad had a heart transplant in 2018. Families go through so much and for so long. It’s completely fair for this girl to feel this way. I met a guy who donated a kidney years ago to a stranger. He gave up so much to save one person. Years later, he needed a kidney transplant along with his heart transplant. Because he was already a donor to someone, he was placed right at the top of the list.

And for people who think Anna truly want ed to be donating her organs, she is manipulated from birth that she has the responsibility to do so. Her pain and emotions were real. She only needed Kate to remind her what their parents were doing were never right from the first place. This part just makes it more fucked up because the donor sibling was fated and designed to be spare parts, including their mindset.

This movie stayed with me all those years, I even wrote about it on an essay competition. Feeling incomplete, I decided to read the book... and that was really a sucker-punch to the gut because the plot twist was real 😱 (It was a bit long and crowded since there was a parallel story regarding Anna's lawyer, but other than that, the metaphors and poetic narratives were worth it 👌🏻).
@Reviewer2016
@Reviewer2016 9 месяцев назад
The saddest fact is in the twist itself. Jesse is just wanting his sister to speak her piece for what is basically her having to be a donor for her dying sister. An aspect she grasps but the mom is lording over her like it’s an obligation but says “she never had to do anything she didn’t want to”. And the icing is how It’s Kate (they dying sister) making Anna do all that. She grasps her mortality and knows it’s not fair her sister will have to take a bullet in the stomach so she doesn’t have to take one in the shoulder. (Yes I know Anna was a savior sibling basically bred to be a nearly perfect organ donor for Kate my point is she knows it isn’t fair if both her and her sister die)

She has every right to be scared, she’s just a kid. I didn’t think it was possible to practically force your child to give up their kidney or other organs for others who need them. It’s a noble decision to make, but it’s also very hard and dangerous, especially for a child.

i actually relate to this movie a lot. i may not be an organ donor to my sibling but i was born for the reason of being a nanny to my eldest brother. every time i feel like i would want to do something for myself instead of dedicating my entire life to my eldest (who treated my other brother and i shit), my parents would say that i was born to be my brother's babysitter for the rest of my life. the same tiredness that anna felt is the same thing i'm feeling because i'm so tired for being used for someone's sake and not be considered as an individual.

I actually seen like a 60 minutes video of this family that had a son so he could give his older sister who was sick bone marrow. They knew before he was born that he was a match because they took the mothers embryos and tested each one or something (easiest i can explain it tbh) but they did say if their daughter wasn't sick they probably wouldn't have had another kid. Like if he find that out when he's older, he's gonna feel terrible, maybe feel unloved

I remember seeing this movie and extremely disliking both parents. They conceived a second child not because they wanted to love that child, but because they wanted to use it for spare parts. They wouldn't have cared if she had refused, they would have taken her parts anyway. That is why they fought so hard, and in the end only the father really accepted that he was wrong. The mother wanted to use force until she had definitively lost.

I was kinda on the mom's side. Wanting to save her child. But the thing that really made me stop is what she called Anna in this scene. A "spoiled little shit". She is not spoiled and how dare her mom say that to her after all that Anna has done for her mom and her sister. If anything the mom is selfish. Anna is concerned about the operation ruining her life. I understand her mom wants to save Kate, but Kate is going to die either way. Which is worse: Ruining one life or two

DismemberedHat I agree. What's truly selfish is having a child just so you can use them for their body parts and just expecting them to be perfectly okay with their body being chopped up. The mother is the selfish one. She doesn't care about her daughter at all. She only sees her as spare parts.

Everyone tried to warn Sara against her plans. The doctors did warn that the kidney transplant wasn't going to be successful at all and both Anna and Kate will face complications later on. Even Suzanne(Sara's older sister in the novel) warned her against the transplant surgery because she was endangering her daughters' own lives. At some point, she stopped listening to everyone and cared about her own interests. The family were running out of options. Kate asking Anna to sue Sara for Medical Emancipation and going to court was their last chance.

In the books, Anna actually died in car crash later when she won in court and was pronounced brain dead. Her parents made the decision to use her organs to help Kate. But same like the books, Kate was tired of fighting and she just wanted to pass on. Even if you want to blame her mum, it is hard because parents always think their kids will outlive them, not die before them. It is something they cannot come to terms and this day and age this is common. The Authors moral was "In loving one child so much, you forgot to love the other."

Watching this scene just makes me wish that the movie had gone with the novels ending. I just get so ticked off at how nasty Sarah gets with Anna. Calling your daughter a “spoiled little shit”, are you serious? I always felt an uneasiness when watching this movie, constantly questioning whether Anna was truly loved by her parents. With Brian it’s more apparent that he loves all three of his kids, even if he struggles to consider all of their feelings. But the guilt he holds for the pain he and Sarah have afflicted on Anna over the years weighs heavy on him. The deleted scenes so more of Brian’s guilt and tenseness to Anna, which I think should’ve been shown. But with Sarah, her desperation and determination to save Kate is so strong that it trumps everything else in her life. That includes her kids as well. But at least with Jesse you can see there’s love for him. She did have him before Kate got sick, so her feelings for him are less questionable. But because Anna was meant to be a donor baby, and because of her desire to save her daughter at all cost, the maternal “love” she claimed to have for Anna always seemed fake. And scenes like this only drive that point even further. She doesn’t care about Anna and how this has affected her. And to have the nerve to call her a spoil little shit is down right audacious. It felt satisfying in the novel when Anna won the case. But (spoilers for those who haven’t read the book; at your own risk) her death immediately was utterly heartbreaking. And yet it’s at that moment, when she realizes she has lost her, that Sarah’s love for Anna finally comes out. After spending her entire life trying to save one daughter, the one she lost was the one she owed so much and had treated so horribly. It’s that old saying: you didn’t know what a good thing you had when had it. It’s only afterwards we realize what it meant. And for Sarah, she realized too late what Anna to her. The movies ending, although not bad (I’m happy Anna got to live here), leaves me feeling unsatisfied with the resolution of Anna and Sarah’s relationship as mother and daughter. Even that final shot of them smiling at each other in Montana isn’t enough. Too much was said and done and Anna had gone through so much hurt and crap from her mother, that I felt we needed to see a moment of reconciliation. At the very least, have Sarah say something of an apology.

It hurts more when you realize that it was not Anna's plan but Kate's. Yes Anna didn't luke being used but Kate was tired of fighting and wanted it to be over so she made Anna stand up for herself and say no. If not for Kate's plan Anna would have kept donating because she loved her sister regardless of the fact she was basically born to save her. Anna loved her big sister and doing this hurt her but she did it for Kate.

I think hearing Anna's emotion in this scene, that Anna did truly want a life of freedom & normalcy beyond sickness. I think Kate saw that. Kate and Anna loved each other. They would do anything for each other. Kate wanted to protect her baby sister, even if meant sacrificing her own life. That's love!!! Kate loved her family so much. The scrapbook scene is a testament to this fact. She wanted all their pain to stop. 💓
