You are 100% correct - most jobs can be learned by most people in 6 weeks or less. It's only gatekeeping that prevents it.

The way my mind was blown in my tech job when I looked at some excel sheets and told my boss what the numbers meant, and he turned around in a meeting and said we'd "analyzed the data and recommend XYZ" truly turning what was 15 minutes of nothing work by me into some buzzy impressive BS. Honestly, this was when I realized I was doing the work, but it wouldn't be recognized because I was explaining what I did like a human instead of a patagonia fleece with an MBA. Anyway, I work in a museum now and absolutely love it. Crossing my fingers for you!

I feel this so much. I set my cap to apply for 5 -10 jobs a week when I was in my first month of unemployment. Then it slowly fizzled to 3 a month bc I was so tired of rejections or companies ghosting me. And the few interviews I got led me to nowhere so i actually started to deeply think what I want to do for a job. I don't care about a career, I just want a job that's not mentally draining and that I like doing day-to-day tasks. So far, to pay the bills I had to take up teaching jobs which I dislike to my core. I have an English/Art History double major degree and there's a huge shortage of English teachers so that's all I could get so far.

The structure of the job is such an underrated aspect. I'm a double major (English Lit and Media&Comms) and my original goal was to work in either tv or the film industry. I think reading scripts and evaluating them has been the only job where I truly love the activity I was doing (ironically, I've only done it as an unpaid intern), but I realised super fast that was not the life I wanted. I am a friendly introvert with TONS of hobbies, fuck the career, I knew I could live a happily and have fulfilling life anyway. At some point in my life, I ended up in film/tv post-production and I worked with this company for almost 3 years. I knew nothing about post, but they needed one person for the back office/ops team willing to do the nights (something I have always wanted to try). And daaaamn, did I love that job. I found the perfect middle ground between a structure that worked for me (some people scattered around a gigantic building I could find and talk to if I wanted, but plenty of one-person jobs and complete control over my own tasks) and a final goal I cared about. My line of work was "below" what ends up in the credits, but I felt truly part of the process, every time I carried around a hard drive and plug it in, I told myself stuff like "wow, there's Poe Dameron in here, I'd better be careful" 😆 I knew that me doing my job contributed to the actual making of a movie (yes, perhaps anyone could do my job, but I was doing it with love and excitement and that was enough for me!). It made me really happy. Now my life is very different and my current job has mostly been chosen because of the structure (completely flexible and remote, with a very cool and supportive team) and it's working put super well. Sorry for the wall of text 🤣 job hunting is a hell of a process and not something I have found a lot of videos about, so thank you for sharing! x

I work for a labor union in Seattle and we have openings but I'm not sure if you'd like it. All positions are 5 days a week and most positions are 90% remote except for a few departments but those positions typically require that you have a car (there is a car and gas allowance) because you have to drive around and organize. Staff-level positions at the union are themselves unionized. Feel free to reach out if you have questions! 🙂

I don't think that's narcissistic at all. Once I started my job, I realized real fast I could have done it years ago because all you really need to have is the willingness to learn. I will say, in my experience, one role that’s hard to do well is being a manager. It’s not hard to be a manager, but it IS hard to be a good manager. Most people get promoted to management roles because they were good at the specific duties of their job, not because they have demonstrated any people management skills, so you end up with a lot of bad managers. I love being a people manager, but it can also be very emotionally taxing. You often wear many hats, as a teacher, a professional mentor, a conflict mediator, a brainstorming buddy, and sometimes even a shoulder to cry on - so just keep that in mind!

looking for work is definitely top 3 anxiogenic activities. i got fired from my last job of 4 years in september last year, because of under-performing (which is partially my own innate flaws AKA mental illness, and part not being motivated at all to work because i was lowkey bullied by coworkers and managers all my time there). i start a new job next week and hopefully it's a good enough fit that my mental illness is only a minimal hindrance in my performance - during interview they made sure to declare that doing the bare minimum will not be acceptable.

I work as an admin assistant for a nonprofit and the leadership in the agency partnership that I support are often times just using language to seem like they know what they’re saying. Yep. It's mostly about if they like you and whether you have a head on your shoulders. The whole issue with these jobs is that they want someone who "fits" the role. It's only really in super technical stuff that you can properly sort people by skills. Obviously there's always going to be differences, but they're much smaller than people in these high up positions pretend they are.

Maybe something smaller/more local/with a more tangible impact would have more appeal for you. I don’t know. I have a mood disorder so even though I managed to scrape by in most of my jobs, I just eventually stopped wanting to do them, and that’s not the sort of attitude they want in an employee. Even I would fire myself in that situation. SO yeah , I’m still figuring it out too.

I hate the posturing of job hunting! Tailering a resume is the worst because I have to convince you to allow me to make you money?? It doesn't make sense lol. It's so artificial but such is the nature of working. Can you talk more about how you avoid being pigeon holed and how you were able to talk about your transferable skills? I have worked customer service for over two years and when looking for a change, I keep getting told to try something closer to the experience I already have. I stopped my job search to focus on building skills but I'd love to hear you speak more about the tactics you use to convince people you can do a job you've never done before (but you know you can do because we all have Google). Just a suggestion 😊. I appreciate the videos!

Why is this still so much more than I would do? I recently got a job that I love, but I was only applying to maybe 3 jobs a week. It took a couple months, but I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process. I would be so burnt out if I was applying to jobs every day.

I've had the same experience breaking into the workforce with it being nowhere near as serious as I thought it would be, and I work in public service. The thing with public service is it's like the Hufflepuff house from Harry Potter - you have the people who are caring and want to help others, and then all the rest that couldn't get jobs anywhere else. And tbh, I think a lot of management is made up of "the rest" because they last the longest (bc they don't stress) and people who really care burn out and end up leaving bc they are the only person in their own proximity taking things seriously.

Have you noticed that we graduated from a certain field and then we end up in a different job that barely has any relation with our studies, or sometimes never. I mean not all people like that but at least me.

Ahh that job rant and competency tied to titles was so good. I noticed the go-getters liked to make the jobs sound super tech-y and near impossible without their involvement. But really it’s not that bad lol.

I’m actually teaching a team from India to learn some of my responsibilities. And starting off they barely can put a power point together, and after a few months they can handle our tools and processes ezpz. Kinda weird thinking about that now… it was a lot of handholding but they get it down.

i love ur attitude because genuinelyyy you can learn most "soft skills" jobs in like 3 months top. i'm interning in a sales dept rn and i'm doing a lot of things that i was never trained for and it's totally fine. i was scared because im very messy and disorganised in my life but turns out managing other people's schedules is quite easy and fun. one girl started working here a year ago she barely speaks english, mind you we're from a small country so none of our buyers speak our language and all of the deals are negotiated in english. they hired her because she was there when the position was freed, kinda batshit!! last year the govt didn't have enough teachers so they would just hire anyone with a masters degree and give them 2 weeks training and off they go teach K-12. i was kind of disappointed by my masters but tbh i can do such a wide range of things and even teach with it so i'm not too worried about the future

So much truth to what you’re saying. I’ve worked as a Motion Designer for about 10 years now for like 6 different companies, 3 being tech companies (yeah I bounce around a lot). I have one of the few jobs in corporate that’s truly really difficult to learn. And I don’t say that to be full of myself, it’s just one of those things that takes a long time to get good at. But I’ve always said to anyone that would listen, I can learn pretty much any job if I need to. Most corporate positions are kinda BS to be completely honest. I even feel that way about my roll as a motion designer. Basically just creating a whole lot of nothing for no reason. I’ve been contemplating a career shift for a while now because being a creative in the corporate world is driving me insane and taking a real toll on my mental health. I know the grass is always greener on the other side, but I want a job where I don’t have to constantly be churning out a from scratch digital product like an animated video. Still don’t know what I want to switch too, but I’m working on it.

As someone who's an extrovert but who's been working remote for a while I JUST FIND THIS REASONING SO RELATABLE!! It's weird bc all my friends are introverts so I feel like I just adopted their reasoning from trying to work from home as much as possible. But I'm just not as happy that way, I think its not right for me.

Yep! I was an art major in college, so once graduated I had a lot of unrelated day jobs as I worked on my art career at night. Most jobs are bullshit. If you went to college, no matter what major, and any college at all, you already have the capacity to learn a new job in a matter of months.

Sounds like u would be great at product management!! And I hear ya on urself treating urself with compassion and ur perspective being warped I did a design bootcamp and they told us to apply (though most were easy apply/didn’t have company specific questions) to 8 jobs a day mon-Fri That means 40 jobs a week By the end of my 4 month job search I applied to 300 but I was still a bit hard on myself for not meeting the requirement.
@Katherout

@@Katherout it was also for their contract/legal. They had a job guarantee if you applied to 160 jobs a month. (i.e. by the end of the program if you did that for x amount of months and didn't have a job--you don't have to pay) I could afford to pay no matter what so I freed myself from that term and went a little "slower paced" but it was still brutal. spray & pray like u say. I'm guessing applying to a lot on linkedin also improves ur visibility to recruiters? but I'm not sure there.

I'm in the same place in my career, I'm not intimidated about ramping into new roles anymore. Nothing wrong with being confident in your critical thinking abilities. I don't tailor my resume, I try to make it a little unique and general. I'm looking for a place interested in an honest version of me. If I have to load in keywords for your automated system to pick me up... Not interested in doing business with you. The QUALITY of interviews I get has risen, cause I'm being picky this job hunt.
