40 is not wrinkly and old... You are too young

I'm nearly 40 and I have to disagree. Depending on the person, you might not have visible wrinkles or grey hair or other signs of aging (you could), but you will look different than you did when you were 20. They could have filled out her bone structure or made her skin look duller or something other than the hair to show that that much time has passed. She really looks like a 20-year-old in glasses.

Not necessarily wrinkly… but you can tell the difference between a 20 year old and a 40 year old. Not sure how they could have done. She looked so fresh faced as a 40 year old it was a bit jarring.

Yeah, it's called fear of the unknown. The less that's the revealed, the more effective the horror. It's like how in Midnight we never get to see the entity, and we never will. I'm 95% sure the vast majority of the mystery in this episode won't ever be revealed, and that's the point.

@@HOTD108_I hope we get a bit more of an explanation. There's fear of the unknown and then there's total non sequiturs. I think we may be watching a gods realm instead of the regular DW universe and that Ruby is tied into that. I'm just hoping the finale gives us a good explanation.

Still dont understand the following: 1. Why did the doctor dissappear? 2. What was the woman/ruby saying to all those people? 3. What was the sign language all about? 4. Given she re-set the time line, does that PM now set off nuclear war?
@StuLost

At least with point number 4. The doctor said even before stepping on the circle that the Prime minister only brought them to the "Brink" so it seems in the main timeline other events take place to stop him.

@corvus1970
@corvus1970 2 месяца назад
1) The in-story reason is because he broke a Fae circle. That's part of the horror. Someone makes a rather innocuous mistake and then pays a wholly disproportionate price. That's what a lot of fairy stores and myths are about. The narrative reason is down to Ruby being abandoned again and again. As she mentions while lying in hospice, "Everyone has abandoned me my whole life." That's one of the overarching themes, and the overarching mystery of the season, and it plays upon the very real and primal fear of abandonment. 2) We don't know. It's unknowable and remains so, and it's supposed to be. In storytelling, the unknown is often far more frightening than what we are shown or what we hear. 3) See #2 4) Considering that the Doctor doesn't mention the Nuclear War a second time, that timeline is most likely gone.

i think ruby is extra-dimensional and has some control over time compared to others. her real mum is def extra-dimensional or smn. she got done a bit like donna in turn left, with a trickster’s brigade thing messing with the timeline, but she was able to resolve it easily cos of her control over time? idk they keep saying things are getting more supernatural and there is way too much pantheon stuff.

The theme of this season is abandonment, and its central to Ruby's character. She fears abandonment, and that's what the older self does when she "speaks" to people. We're watching it from her perspective, so what is said is irrelevant, it's about how it affects Ruby. The Faerie circle seemed to open a time loop, or pocket universe/timeline. Kate Stewart hints to other timelines when talking to Ruby this episode as well. There's actually a couple things that Kate Stewart says that could be hinting towards where this season is going. Whether a lot of the questions are explained or not is for future episodes to answer. There's clearly something odd about Ruby and they've given plenty of hints that she's not completely human. There's a chance she's related to the Pantheon, and that would mean she's connected to another universe. I think a lot of early reactions to this episode will change depending on how the season concludes.

Exactly what you said! I will also add that this being the most fantasy episode of modern Who, the loop is more of a fate loop rather than a time loop. We are playing with magic and D&D-esque rules now, honey. Additionally, this episode in particular, and the season more broadly, does give me Graham Williams era Who vibes. When I first watched 73 Yards I felt a kinship to Stones of Blood. I hope Varada Sethu's character in season 2 is non-human. Either from some other world and time or even from E Space.

Brilliant episode. Not all questions need answering or CAN be answered. Kate spoke of that directly when talking to Ruby, about how we humans create rules around the unknowable. @@kjo1849 The key source of my frustration is the ‘twist at the end’. It spoils everything. The figure inducing terror/disgust in anyone it speaks to is a great idea. If the figure had been an unknown entity, a supernatural creature then YES, the concept that it can say something that would cause that reaction, even in Ruby’s own mother, would be brilliant. It was brilliant and creepy whilst watching it. But then the twist absolutely ruins it. The mysterious woman is Ruby! What? That’s makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Particularly as we actually spend a fair amount of time with old Ruby, and she’s lovely. We know for a fact she never learns what has happened or what the woman said. There’s certainly no indication that she’s learned some terrible, forbidden secret that could install terror in any who hear it. We follow old Ruby right up to the moment of her apparent death. So when she magically teleports back to the past, where is she getting this from! What the hell is she saying that causing Ruby’s mum to hate her so much she takes out a restraining order? She isn’t scared of Ruby, she’s not upset that she can’t see her, she clearly hates her. What could old Ruby (who is just Ruby, just older) possibly have said to her that would cause that? More to the point WHY would she be doing that?
@Spoon_Loves_Nutella
@Spoon_Loves_Nutella 2 месяца назад
@@stevetayler9518thing is time loops never make sense to me because the order of events would have to happen at least once without the past or future interfering. But anyway, I think perhaps the reason the old woman decides to make people run away is because she’s trying to make sure Ruby stays on the path to stop the PM. If she stopped making people run off, then she could be interfered with, and thus Ruby may never have felt that she could stop the PM reasonably. But yeah I agree with you it makes no sense ruby would be scaring people off.

I totally agree this is a very strange opening season to try and introduce and get in thousands of new viewers. So much of it has been dependent on previous story lines. If it is to do with wild blue yonder then surely they need to start the Disney season with that. But then it would need to see the episode before otherwise you come in halfway through. And then you've got all the Donna backstory. The thing is you can't really ever start a fresh with Doctor Who. It's got a 60 year history suck it up and get on with it. Personally I don't give a crap about getting a new viewers how about trying to entertain amuse the millions you could have here in the UK??

I thought this was a nod to Welsh fairy tales of harbingers of death (Welsh folks, you've got a surprising amount of harbingers lol), except this time it's her literal death following her versus, say, a big ole dog. We may find out later in the season that something really was said to everyone that ran away, but within the episode, I thought being in the presence of death is what sent them off screaming. Death is our most primal fear, and despite it always following us, always being our constant companion, people will do almost anything to escape even being reminded of it. I thought the 73 yards represented when she was gonna die, where each meter (since this is a UK show) represented one year of her life left. She was 19 at the beginning, so that would've meant she almost 86 when she died (possibly 92 if it really was one yard = one year). But that's why it was finally able to get close at the end. Death didn't have to follow anymore as it was finally time. *73 meters would've made more sense since this is a UK show, but even if it was 66.75 meters, that tracks for around the age they made her at the end.

I just had a thought after watching this. The first person we see run away from the old Ruby is the Susan Twist charcter, right? She must be important due to constant appearences and Ruby even notices her a bit today. So, what if, the people weren't running away from Ruby, but, somehow, Susan Twist instead - like she is a mastermind behind this. This could be paid off later as we never found out why people ran, and mid-season episodes (yes we are there already!) are sometimes relevant to the overarching story.

About this episode ciclical structure... First time I watched the first and last scene I thought the Doctor mentioned Roger ap Gwilliam only the first time, not the second one. But he does. What he doesn't say is the nuclear situation. Now, my theory about the structure is this: Future Ruby (FR) appeared in the second timeline in order to distract Ruby from the Doctor's revelation about Roger, by turning her attention toward the Fairy Circle; this way, in the new timeline, Roger was not foreshadowed by the Doctor as a nuclear danger, but only as a bad politician (which can mean even just a dickhead, without any WW3 intention); then FT placed the name Mad Jack in the first timeline, because Present Ruby (PR) was now somehow aware of the danger, and she had to stop it; in fact, once the whole timeline replayed at the end, FR now knew she had to stop the Doctor from mentioning the nuclear incident, thus allowing it to not-exist in the new timeline; thus said, FR didn't need to exist anymore, as the old timeline. There was no evil spirit of any sort, just FR placing hints for her past self ti stop Roger from being a threat: once the Doctor aknoledges him, this future exists in the timeline, and Ruby was thus aware of it; the Circle, the 73-yards-distance, scaring people away were just meant to cause PR to maintain her on the track, and now knowing all of this, FR could now distract PR from allowing Roger to move on with the first timeline; not knowing the future allows it to change, and once you know it's meant to happen it can't be easily changed, which Is why PR had to not know of it in order for her to live in a différent timeline; it's a Schroedinger's cat situation with the Doctor's knowledge, and as long as he doesn't say it, it can not happen. Does it make sense? I hope. XD

Initially, I thought the story needed to be fleshed out a bit and the characters needed a reason for what they do... I still agree with that (Roger's storyline, in particular, needed fleshing out, as did his character? There are still more questions than answers, though, and I hope we get those answers (though, I'm not holding my breath).

i think the curse is to live out what mad jack’s unleashing would bring. she was always destined to become the lady and fix the circle, but because of the influence of the doctor, ruby was clever enough to try and stop mad jack which was never apart of the curse. As i was watching the episode, i thought that maybe the 73 Yards woman was showing the people who approached her what Ruby really is, i was thinking Celestial being or something like that, which is why they were terrified and ran away, and why her mum ran away because she was ashamed she had brought up a monster. The monster idea also lead me to believe it was a parallel universe or a literal nightmare where Ruby's fears such as abandonment from her adopted family came true, as well as the Doctor running away, with the woman representing the hope her true mother was always there for her still. A side note about the difference in actresses for both old Ruby's is that maybe Russel expected that fans would theorise that Mrs Flood is older Ruby so wrote a specific epsiode that shows Ruby as old but then wanted to double bluff by having 2 versions of Old Ruby so we can still believe that Flood is her or not.

I liked this episode, HOWEVER, the tonal shifts from the Welsh tavern, to Ruby’s home life and then to Roger ap Gwilliam felt a bit jarring and too overstuffed - I was initially anticipating the Welsh folklore horror vibes going into the episode, and I think it was a shame they didn’t spend more time with that concept. That being said, I LOVED Ruby’s characterisation on her own without the Doctor, and the consistent development of Susan Twist as a mysterious character this season. The 73 Yards woman was genuinely one of the creepiest, strangest characters I’ve ever seen - just wish they could’ve resolved WHY people ran away from her - but I did enjoy the twist at the end. Overall, not my favourite episode of this season so far (probably my second favourite), but it certainly kept me intrigued and hooked all the way through!

I loved the tonal shifts because it kept the episode so interesting and also added to the mystery of everything. I think people running away from Ruby was because the circle was punishing ruby and haunting her based on her deepest insecurities of abandonment. It didn't just make people afraid of her it made people hate her... It made the run away without ever explaining why... Just like her mother did and Ruby doesn't know why.

If you view this episode as a mythological fairytale, which was heavily implied with the tavern scene, you can forgive some of the unanswered questions. I believe that the Doctor traded places with Mad Jack in the fairy circle; it was established that the fairy circle was built to keep Mad Jack at rest in that spot. The woman/old Ruby was the Omen Keeper for Mad Jack warning Ruby about disturbing the circle. Sadly I don't understand why when other people interacted with the woman, they withdrew and became mad and distant. Maybe only Ruby could interact with her because she is a paradox?

Main thing is that a split in the timeline happened when the circle was broken. And that caused an alternative reality to branch off. Where the Doctor went IDK. Ruby was caught at the center of it all and was not affected by time changing around her. Then time resumed along the path of this alt universe following the fracture that travelled back along the old timeline. Resulting in a universe that spanned the life of Ruby. The ending was just that alternate Ruby warning current day and main universe Ruby to avoid the circle. Mad Jack wasn't resurrected essentially and no mention of the nuclear stuff once they exit the TARDIS

There is something about Susan Twist's appearance this time that bothers me. At the beginning of the episode, Ruby begins to recognize / remember her as she walks down the hills alone. By the end of the episode, it's pretty clear, that the events we just saw won't ever happen that way again. As a result, Susan would never have been recognized by Ruby. So far, we have not made much progress on this mystery.

It was a bit confusing, but not in a bad way. Im still making sense of it. Theres likely a bit of lore in those fairy circle thingies. I believe the notes could have been the magic seal to prevent roger ap gwilliam from coming into existence, but the doctor being a time traveller had seen gwilliam at some point. By breaking the magic seal the events that led to gwilliam happened, but the disturbance of the magic seal led to old ruby becoming a sort of spirit ever warning younger ruby to not disturb the seal, and the fact that no one could help ruby or abandoned her was part of the spell / ward. The fact that someone in the past knew about gwilliam is part of the witchcraft / divination aspect of the thing. There's a line about the clifftops near the sea being a soft place between land and sea, past and future etc that really resonates with the mystically inclined.

I disagree with the Inside No. 9 comparison as Inside No. 9 episodes do almost always have all the information in the episode to get a whole picture of what happened & almost always makes everything clear at the end of the episode (the latest episode for example is an outstanding example. Even the episodes which are less clear what happened, the episode tends to give you enough information to point you to answer (the opening episode of Series 9 is great example of that). 73 Yards however doesn’t feel like it gives me everything or even knows everything. Things just kind of happen, and that’s disappointing. If something happens without any explanation, then that disappointment feels justified. Also, Inside No. 9 episodes are all self contained & are unique when it comes to setting & characters, all being told in just half an hour. Doctor Who is episodic & serialised, with recurring settings & characters, so the comparison between the two doesn’t work that well, to me at least

I understood right away that it all had something to do with the TARDIS and perhaps a combination of timey-wimey and whatever unusual abilities Ruby has. She didn't "become" the old lady when she aged up, she *was* the old lady when she aged up. And I think, as touched on in the episode, the "perception filter" had something to do with her appearing like a blurry hologram after she passed in the future of whatever moment she kept appearing in. Simple as. (obvious not that simple lol) As for the 'Mad Jack' plot, it may have just been an implied coincidence, since the mystical lore she gathered at the pub made it appear as if it were plausibly connected to her past. The episode fringed on magic and sci-fi pretty well, at least I thought so. Kept me on my toes.

Given she re-set the time line, does that PM now set off nuclear war? A: (spoilers) Mad Jack is now trapped in the Pocket-of-time Spell as you will notice the Doctor does not mention him this time around.

I think we’re getting an ongoing mystery story about Ruby where each episode gives a few more clues (or puzzles), rather than each one wrapped up in a bow. Why can she make it snow? What was the music that came out of her? And, in 73 Yards, how can two Ruby’s be present in the same moment, let alone for 63 years, without a dangerous paradox? And does 2 Ruby’s on the same timeline support the theory that a version of Ruby brought infant Ruby to the church doorstep? And I’m sure we’re meant to wonder what those repeated arm movements of the woman/Being/Ruby2 were meant to be saying, not because production ran out of time, but because the camera purposely kept cutting away so that we couldn’t clearly catch the order they were repeated in. Why couldn’t older Ruby make it snow anymore, and when did she realize she was actually the one making it happen? And why did the Doctor forget what year she was from? That’s out of character. But Ruby also forgot, in the last episode, when she’d last seen Carla. For a mother-daughter bond like they have, that seems odd too. I almost wonder if the six months we didn’t get to see, after she signed on, actually happened… Ruby’s origins are a mystery that is building with each episode, intentionally. They couldn’t fully explain the Being at 73 yards, because Ruby became her. But I don’t think it was a simple time loop. Why would Ruby frighten Carla, and destroy their relationship? Something is amiss here, and they’re building clues leading to an eventual reveal.

My theory is that in throughout the episode, the woman wasn't future Ruby. And that somehow, just as she died, older Ruby managed to change the past and become the woman in the past. i think this largely because the Woman and old Ruby aren't played by the same woman. If it was Ruby all along, that would mean it's a cycle and as potentially happened countless times before. So why does it change at the end? Why is only this version of Ruby able to change the timeline?

Okay, so, don't just TLDR this, or ignore it... Ruby Sunday doesn't go back in time to become that woman at all. Well... sort of. My theory, thought up when hearing everyone else's theory, is that we see 'reality three (or more)' from the moment the Doctor vanishes. Reality one is one where nothing happens except Mad Jack is released (from the Doctor stepping on the circle). Roger Ap Gwilliam does his thing, gets the codes, and sets off the nukes - which is why the Doctor knows this happens in the future. After this, perhaps not long after this, Ruby becomes, or somehow merges with, that woman, who lives her time in reverse with respect to everyone else. From HER perspective, she first of all uses Ruby to prevent the end of the world (perhaps successfully, perhaps not) and then carries on to stop the Doctor stepping on the circle in the first place... but she fails to do that too. He DOES step on the circle... again. This triggers a repeat of events, with the woman connecting to Ruby at the end of a timeline in which the woman (and Mad Jack) both exist from the start. Eventually, the woman gets it right... and she succeeds to prevent the world ending (with Ruby's help, of course). and also stops the Doctor stepping on the circle. This timeline, from the 'current' Ruby's perspective, is what we see from the start - the overlapping reality where both of the woman's tasks succeed. When this happens, the Doctor never steps on the circle, Mad Jack never emerges, and the woman herself stops existing (as she is only generated after a failed attempt). Thoughts, please???

Yeah, I'm feeling a bit like you. The episode seems brilliant for most of it. The strange woman who seemed particularly scary during Ruby's train ride, people running away and apparently never being seen again, the absolutely gut wrenching moment Carla doesn't just run away, but sodding well gets in a taxi! And then Ruby pretty much accepts her life, with 73 yards woman always there. But yeah, the episode just sort of flops after that, with no payoff. Ruby's timeline is restored, but, i was was expecting at least a reaction from the Doctor, like, "you took an entire lifetime to figure it out, that's rude" or something. Tbh, i wasn't expecting the political stuff this episode, i thought that was later on? The concept is brilliant and for around 90-95% of it, it works well. Maybe this is all a part of the bigger mystery and the payoff will hapoen, later (The Legend of Ruby Sunday, perhaps )but i was expecting something more than, to restore her timeline and to save the Doctor from..where?, she just needed to warn him about the magical string circle. Maybe they could have had a sort of groundhog day situation where Ruby has to work out what to do differently to avoid her new timeline repeating and being restored etc, i dunno. I'm definitely doing a rewatch to see if i can make more sense of it.

Like why everyone feared and hated Ruby after speaking with old-Ruby, or in the case of Roger Ap Gwilliam, terrifying him into retirement? Film started great, then became a bedtime story for kids 'and they all lived happily ever after', no explanations, no forward thinking, just 'goodnight little Children' and that's exactly how RTD has made me feel, insulted and talked-down to.
