A runner filmed a face-off with a large bear that pursued him for several minutes in Grand Teton national park in Wyoming, producing a three-minute video that went viral. Evan Matthews said he often saw bears on his runs, but none had dared to come so close. 'This one was interested in me, so I had to change its mind,' he wrote. Rather than use his bear spray, Matthews opted to reason with his ursine inquisitor.

thats a baby. he isnt chasing you. he is sniffing you and kept his distance since he is just curious, he doesnt know much about humans. Grizzly bears are the ones you have to be careful with. Watch Grizzlyman it is a documentary about a guy who hung out with hundreds of grizzley bears and one big giant male eventually decided he was food, but that was still after multiple occasions where the killer bear displayed anger. that bear didnt display anger over territory and if he thought you were food he would have sprinted at you the moment he sniffed you.

@@masjos7103 not true. There are people in the Appalachians that live with black bears everyday. Nobody gets hurt as long as you respect the bears. The bears walk up to people on their decks, sniff, eat some seeds and leave peacefully

I am not so sure. But maybe his car was in the direction he was going toward in the beginning of the vid. But if he were to proceed, he'd get closer to and probably meet with the bear. So he had to run to the opposite direction- away from his car. Or, I was overthinking. 😂.

@@cucumumu6671 I think that’s exactly what happened. I found myself in a similar situation with a huge bull moose (also quite dangerous). It was safer to walk in the opposite direction and wait until he left the area.

I was one of a handful of people across the USA that located permanent homes for six orphaned grizzly bear cubs whose sows were killed by careless humans in back country humans. You can see three of my babies at Bearizona in Williams, Arizona. Those babies were 11 pounds when orphaned last April. They now each weigh 500 pounds or more. Names are Sky, Crockett and Hanna. Bear spray was not used when a hiker came upon the female grizzly and her cubs. Again, bear spray and loud voices work. That biker did all the right things. THANK YOU.

What a coincidence! This guy doesn't care about his own safety, he rather get the views instead. Maybe just maybe he goes out with the intention of disturbing wildlife to get views. Either way his priorities are f***ed. His luck is gonna run out and I won't have any sympathy for him when a hungry grizzley dines on him while he's still alive.

They are starting to come out this time of year. It's still snowing in CO and WY. Black bears are not true hibernators. They go into torpor which is like a deep sleep. They WILL get up during the winter and go looking for food. I lived in bear country for 10 years. I would bet money the guy had a protein bar or other food on him that the bear could smell. They can smell a mile or more away.

There are fewer than 1 fatal black bear attacks on humans per year, so don’t let that stop you from enjoying wilderness adventures. But education/awareness/preparation is important, as is vigilance and a large can of bear spray!

Another video on here a guy encounters a mountain lion, who is very protective of her young. The guy backs away while filming. All he had to do was put away the f***ing camera allowing him to use both hands to pick up rocks and maybe a piece of wood to defend his life. No, instead he wants views.

I didn't like him backing up and backing up. He should be standing his ground, and like you said make yourself as loud and big as possible. His priority seems to me is capturing it on video, which is more important? Capturing it on video or getting out of there unharmed? People's priorities are so f***ed up, they are almost willing to die for views.

@@MaiNguyen-ef7be Umm.... sure, if there are beets around. Here, beets would only be found in a compost bin, LOL. Bears are omnivores and will eat whatever is available. On rare occasion, if hungry enough, that may be a human. Here in the Rocky Mountains, black bears primarily eat: Insects and larvae. Fish. Succulent plants. Honey. Carrion. Meat from young deer, moose, elk, and livestock such as sheep. And, of course, they *love* the native raspberries!

That’s a funny image, but bears don’t hunt in packs. Most fatal black bear attacks on humans are made by solitary males, often stalking as this one was doing. A study in the Journal of Wildlife Management documented 59 fatal black bear attacks in the US and Canada and found that: “.... it is lone, hungry males-not mothers with young-who are most often the killers.”

Really? Bears are opportunistic and can frequently be seen in downtown neighborhoods. Where shall we all move to? Better to simply be educated, vigilant, respectful, prepared, and handle these encounters with a cool head, as this guy did.

No black bear in recorded history has ever consumed a human being (that's left to Kodiak bears and of course the super deadly Polar Bears) I think the bear is just used to being fed by humans clearly.

It’s not winter. This appears to be a recent video. You realize that it snows in spring in many places, right? I’m in Colorado and have close to 2 feet of snow at my house right now. And, yes, the bears came out of hibernation here a week or so ago, before the last snowstorm, and they are ravenous and can be particularly dangerous right now.

Thank you for using bear spray and talking loudly. Bears are waking up now. Hikers, spring hunters, antler she'd hunters walking in the back country must carry bear spray and stay away from bear dens. Stay out of back country for a few weeks as grizzly come out if dens. Do not carry loaded weapons.

All due respect a loaded weapon (minimum 44 MAG ) could be the only thing that could save you from a charging 800 pound Grizzley.Bear spray?Did you see the story of the Wyoming guide and hunter a few years ago? They were in that situation the guide was killed they had a .50 cal hand gun but if my memory serves me right the safety was on or it malfunctioned. Help arrived and killed the bear autopsy on the bear showed it was sprayed it didn’t stop it.I love animals but if I’m in the back country in the northwest my handgun is on me with safety off.Shooting an animal would be my last recourse.
