I feel like I should put this here as everyone seems to have a problem with the whistle. This isn't a "rape whistle". It is a survival whistle. Some animals are scared off by the whistle, some won't be. Each animal is different there, but that's not the only purpose of the whistle. The sound of the whistle carries a lot better than your voice does, and is unmistakeable as to what it is. It effectively alerts other people that you are in distress. Say you slip off a trail and become injured, a survival whistle is a great aid in helping people locate you, and is far easier on your throat than trying to constantly shout at the top of your lungs; something that will quickly tire you out. Even in this video, another hiker arrives right at the end, who no doubt heard her whistle and probably picked up his pace to find out who was in distress ahead of him. Nobody ever claims it's a miracle fix; it should not be your only defense against wildlife. But it is a useful tool that every hiker should carry.

People belong wherever they have the ability and desire to go. You don't get to dictate where they go. The world can be dangerous, and people can die in nature. Exemplary behaviour of the woman: start making loud noises, scream and shout, make yourself look bigger and imposing, make your presence felt, while all the time backing out of the place, AND never ever turn around and start running, because for a bear it is a matter of instinct - a bear that sees a creature running away treats it as food and starts chasing it immediately.

I used to hike on trails and fire roads pretty often but never saw or heard one, except for the day I saw two and heard another while on a two-hour hike. Made we wonder how many times I was within a few feet of one but I just didn't notice. One of Mountain Lions' favorite hunting tactics is to wait in the undergrowth near a game trail (or ANY sort of path or road) and suddenly spring out and grab an animal or human. Never saw one of those, either, but I wonder how many saw ME. If they're hungry enough they have NO fear once they decide to go for a kill.

I haven't been in the mountains for over 20 years, but when I used to go frequently, I've seen mountain lion tracks, bear tracks in the snow and almost stepped on a rattlesnake. Also almost rode over a gigantic rattle snake with a mountain bike. It's good to keep your eyes peeled @@The_DC_Kid

@@trussmonkey5910 It is a survival whistle. It is a very useful thing to have when hiking. The loud whistle can scare off some animals, and it is also a fantastic means of alerting others that you are in distress. Say you slip and fall off a trail and become injured, the sound of that whistle carries far further than your voice can. Really every hiker should carry one.

@@CranberryFo Thanks for the info. The whistle didn't seem effective for deterring the bear. Maybe she should consider some wilderness animal defenses in her hiking loadout. Personally I'm more concerned about cougars. Best to give them a fake name and sneak out in the morning.

I'm one of those "dumb girls" who go hiking alone. What would the difference be if it was a man? There's a video of a guy who ran into a very angry mountain lion when he was walking alone and had to walk backwards for quite some time while it followed him. You can see it here on YT. So what's the deal with women/girls being "dumb" going alone? If both men and women can get into trouble, please explain the unique lack of qualifications that point to females being at any more risk. Also, I know of a male hike leader who slipped and died on this trail. So back to your task to educate me on her lack of qualifications, and mine, for that matter. Please, explain in great detail. Waiting.

Luckily I was far enough away from the bear family that the event passed without additional excitement. I was armed, and to this day, I am thankful that I did not have to use my gun.
