IRL the upfront cost of pedestrianising is huge, but the maintenance cost is negligible. It really pays off in the long run. They should just reflect this in game.
@Christopher-me3nf
@Christopher-me3nf Год назад
I was thinking the same thing. It didn't make sense to me that a pedestrian only area would be so expensive. All you're doing is removing cars, which don't make money and only cause damage to roadways overtime which costs money. Plus, even though the upfront cost to 'pedestrianizing' an already car-focused area is large, building a pedestrian focused area from the start - where you don't have to change infrastructure - should be cheaper no?

@Mikejo2603
@Mikejo2603 2 года назад
I just started a city with these features! My inspiration was actually The Line project that the Saudi Arabians want to do. Getting from one part of the city to the next is completely done by metro or walking/biking. City services work perfectly anyway because they tree the walkways like roads anyway. The only services I have outside of the pedestrian zone are Water and Electricity. I am loving the lack of car traffic and gridlock!
@NCXDesigns
@NCXDesigns 2 года назад
@@Mikejo2603 i’ve seen it. But its only a concept. The concept also looks very unrealistic to make happen since it would require technology we just don’t have yet and it would also make poverty vs rich privilege even worse because who are going to live on the lower level of the city? The poor. The rich will get the upper level’s because that is likely to be higher in demand/price. No one wants to live in darkness without getting to see sunlight. The design is just a fantasy, Saudi Arabia just trying to show the world they are better than us because they have all our money from the oil they sell. Rant over

Yup a walkable city should go Train>subway>bus>bike>walking by decreasing order of distance traveled and only offer access for cars in areas not served by these within reasonable distance. The way in which you were forced to build a industrial area in order to get to IT clusters could be thought of like going through the ages. You started the game in the 1800-1900 after the industrial revolution and then as you build you are advancing through 1900-2000 and then once your city is fully pedestrianized you can consider that time period 2000-2100. You could even take this further by having a large part of the map be flooded and have the city have a whole bunch of canals to account for rising sea levels. Maybe even go even further and get a bunch of assets from the workshop which really sells the rising sea level aspect, having houses on pillars and even houses that float on water.

A cool merch idea could be city branded shirts and hoodies for the cities you have made. Like those shirts you get at vacation gift shops. You could design a city emblem and a slogan. Like “New Tealand - A city so hot, it’s always on fire.” Or “Missisipatea - The best city east of Teaville.” I’m sure the comment section could come up with better slogans.

I learned that you can box in various industries, normal, DLC, and specialized; if you give them cargo outlets like trains or harbors they will work. That means no highway access or access to streets. A closed loop. Those cargo spots offload to another area and then into warehouses, the warehouse zone is fine to link into the main spine of the pedestrian service areas if it is near a highway. Then everything just goes onto the highway after its been sorted. You can import people with busses, metros, and monorails. NO MORE CHAOS! If a zone is overproducing you can flick its warehouse off in the warehouse zone and it will shut down till you can sort out a new export route.

One think you need to remember you can put any zoned industry (including zoned industry specialisations). You can also assign pedestrian zones with any industry, commercial, office and residential district specialisation such as sustainable, local produce, farming etc. The only thing you need a district zone for would be themes. The only think I can see can’t do is mix and match other special areas like industry dlc areas, campus areas and park life areas.

A couple months ago I made a pedestrian only city using TMPE road restrictions (very tedious). It created some interesting unique challenges! I still needed traffic management for emergency vehicles and trucks and such. I had to rely extremely heavily on public transit which was really neat. People still needed to access their jobs, but couldn't be too close to commercial/industrial areas due to pollution/noise. The no-cars rule made balancing those requirements much harder (and more interesting IMO). It's kind of a bummer that the DLC/service building make things easier rather than harder. I'd love to see a mini-series of this style of city! I really enjoyed building out my city.

Bit surprised you didn't work towards some form of planned layout. Like how you'd hope city planners would do it with a perfect vision and not just adding onto existing areas... I think an collector road surrounding a (mostly) pedestrian zone was already a nice idea before the dlc. With money I'd look to optimise the area that necessary services give, which probably leads to districts with centers full of stuff that justs costs money but makes people happy. There are probably various patterns to mix of commercial and residential, maybe a ring around the center. Like the industry zone, I'd keep a "cash cow area" just so long as it's needed, and look to replace it later. Either with something more efficient or with something ok-ish that just looks nice or fits the theme.

I'm loving this new Pedestrian-Zoning. Hopefully it get's more people to rethink where & how they live and what could be possible if everything was in walking distance near you.
@SchemingGoldberg
@SchemingGoldberg 2 года назад
Yeah, like the fact that pedestrian zones are expensive and impractical. Our ancestors walked, there's a reason we chose to stop walking.
@Flowhill
@Flowhill 2 года назад
@@SchemingGoldberg hehehe. In reality car infrastructure is miles more expensive to maintain than dense walkable areas. Car centric suburban areas for example absolutely leak money.
@SchemingGoldberg
@SchemingGoldberg 2 года назад
@@Flowhill It isn't the cost of the roads, it's the cost of needing everything (houses, shops, warehouses, etc.) to be local. Cars enable you to shop at places far away, which gives civil engineers a lot of flexibility, but walking limits you to only the closest 2 miles or so. You can't scale up pedestrian areas, by necessity they have to be small.
@wohlhabendermanager
@wohlhabendermanager 2 года назад
@@SchemingGoldberg I see you definitely need to watch channels like Not Just Bikes and Strong Towns. Cities/places that are accessible only by car are super expensive and need to be subsidized. And just FYI, we didn't "chose to stop walking", we are being forced to stop walking by the way our cities are designed. Which also isn't good for our general health, costing society a lot more money in the long run.
@SchemingGoldberg
@SchemingGoldberg 2 года назад
@@wohlhabendermanager We used to have the "small walkable" towns that you want, but society organically chose to adopt cars. When cars were first invented, nobody was *forced* to buy cars, cities were not designed for cars, people bought cars because they were *better* than what we had before. The city designing came AFTER cars were already popular among people. Your idea of history is just completely wrong. There are legitimate issues with how our cities are designed, but those issues can be fixed without throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Pragmaticism always beats idealism.

I was thinking, probably the pedestrian area can be applied just to the streets, parks and services related to the new update, technically you could save some money if you do not want the new themed buildings🤔

Regarding the mods, this update broke almost all widely used mods and new ones are getting developed, and till everything goes into some balance, there will still be a lot of issues for many people. I almost lost all of my saves, and didn't figure out what exactly caused it. Thankfully after some mods and assets unsub, it goes fine now. Nevertheless, a great challenge you started right at the beginning 😁 And yes, removing all of industry instantly isn't viable, never 😛. Taught it the hard way, what seems to be self-explanatory.

Who’s going to tell Biffa that there were no commercial buildings in the mid-century modern theme when it was selected for the pedestrian zone? That explains why none every built in around those plazas and why the money didn’t go up more after that.

I wouldn't worry too much. While car traffic may not be a thing potentially, there is still the problem with managing pedestrian traffic.

I wonder if you could simplify traffic in a warehouse district by making it a pedestrian zone with deliver everything but no pedestrian roads. Cargo trucks should be able to deliver to any warehouse by delivering to any service point. I don’t know what it would do for warehouse to warehouse traffic.

I dislike the mechanic of the costs for pedestrian area because it should have more upkeep depending on the houses not on the size of the area. And there should be upkeep for normal houses too (road works etc)
