HI Tyler, first of all, I'm so happy to hear you found your passion ❤️ It really is an amazingly interesting field and such a fulfilling profession. My advice would be: Start from where you are and move to UX Writing with whatever steps you can. Meaning: You can just learn and practice UX Writing for yourself or with the help of courses, build a portfolio (with fictional or real case studies, whatever you have at hand), and apply for junior positions. If that doesn't work out, try to similar positions: Content Writing, Marketing Writing, whatever helps, and keep on working with UX Writing on the side - either with a personal blog, on Medium, whatever, so that soon, your name gets associated with the discipline. I know, it sounds like a long process, but it's worth it ❤️ All the best for you!

Love this question! Most of the projects in my portfolio are freshly built products, so normally, I also don't use before-and-after comparisons. I just choose screens that I think represent the copy of the product properly (usually, for a website, it's the hero stage of the home page, the 404 error, the contact page, and a few other characteristic parts). For apps, I mostly go for parts of the onboarding or registration flow, small alerts/error messages, and sections that are crucial for the user experience. If this doesn't apply to your product, I would say: Choose the copy elements you're most proud of or you feel best about!

Hello and thank you so much for your comment! Very interesting and important question! No, as a UX Writer you don't necessarily do all the writing in a project. Some of the content may be written by other departments (the Marketing department, legal department, copywriters) and they will give the content to you. This is often the case in big companies that have a special department for everything. In smaller companies, however, the UX Writer often does ALL the writing!

You should also show the parts of the copy, of course! I usually show it on the first and the last slide of each project. You can see how I involved it, e.g. in minute 10:28 or 13:36. However, the portfolio is not necessarily there to show off all your copy (usually, when you write an app, you will have like about a 100 text elements). Instead, show significant copy pieces, i.e. those that represent the brand best or those that solve a complex problem, and the rest of it should all be about your process. This is to prove that you know how to write copy in a structured way. If we don't show our process, we might as well just written good copy by accident. In this case, the final UX copy doesn't say much about your skills, and you want to prove your skills and approach to build trust here. But of course, always include samples of your copy to show where the process has led you!
