I was impressed how quickly Holly understood what Hiroko was doing in the conversation with Kosei. I only managed to do this the second time I watched this show. And about Kosei's mother it's really complicated to make a definitive judgment because nobody loved Kosei as much as she did but nobody hurt Kosei as much as she did... This reminds me a lot of certain relationships in Fruits Basket, where I learned that even with good intentions and with love a person can still end up hurting others.
let's keep on riding that sad train chooo choooo!!!!! this anime really just keeps finding ways to metaphorically drive a knife into our hearts, and THEN SOME while twisting it deep within to ensure the most painful way prolongs.... poor kousei just has a track record of getting hurt by those around him somehow... he needs to keep going forward on that journey new setup looks fresh
I mean, I spoiled myself by being my usual super analytic self lol, still brought the onions. I guess Crunchyroll aren't kidding when they put it in the Bring The Tears category 😂. On another note, you should maybe check out Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings In Russian, which just got a season 2 greenlit a few days ago. The manga/Light Novel is still ongoing too. Not surprising given the latters sales figures (over 5 million copies sold). The last two episodes have still not been dubbed and the manga only has 47 chapters translated. This is a brand new phenomenon lol. Started watching it a few months ago, but there were only 2 episodes out at the time, so I left it until last week when it was finished (don't know exactly when but it's obviously fairly recently because the last two episodes still aren't dubbed) because I'm a binger 😆.
That is why in the previous episode, Hiroko told Kousei he "finally grew up as a musician and a person" the day he said "I hope you die" to his mom when he was younger, of course, with so much toxicity between them, it sounds fucked, but in their context, her mom felt like he was not only able to make up his own mind, but also, be the best (he won all competitions) pianist regardless of his feelings, which she matter the most since she was not going to be around for much longer, thus, she died "peacefully" not longer after that. Sad that they had to go so far to reach that point and in that abusive way, but before the illness hits in, she was a very loving mother. ALSO, don't worry about the spoilers, trust us, the way everything develops and ultimately gets delivered is WAY MORE deep and important than knowing the details, seriously, I can't wait for the next reactions!
I think if I watched this anime subbed I wouldn't have loved it half as much. Yes, its one of those rare shows where the dub far outweighs the sub. The moment in Ep.12 when Hiroko talks with Kousei about her mom is horrible in sub, it sounds dismissive and distasteful, and that whole interaction just leave a bad taste, but they way they translated in Eng dub is much more graceful, realistic and respectful translation, I encourage you to check it out. In many other cases throughout the show it far outshines the sub, they even nailed the beautiful flowery writing style. With the dub this Anime is definitely up in the top 3 for me.
The following is not one of those "sub" vs. "dub" arguments. I'm completely bilingual in English and Japanese, and while I always watch the Japanese anime in its native audio, I cannot help but also read the subtitle. My eyes automatically go there. And what I have noticed over the years is that different video disc/streaming providers often use different subtitles even for the same exact title. I have seen a minimum of four different subtitle versions for YLIA, with varying qualities. And I have seen at least one subtitle edition for YLIA that could have been better. Unlike the subtitles in some other anime, I have not seen anything in these different YLIA subtitles that are outright wrong, but as I said, the quality does vary. So that may be what you experienced when you watched a subtitled version of YLIA. (There are some subtitles, not for YLIA but for other anime, that are unbelievably bad, so bad that they effectively alter the context - and this happens in dubbed ones too) As to the dub version of YLIA, I have only watched the Crunchyroll edition, and it was just fine. Needless to say, being bilingual, there is not much reason for me to choose the dub version, but I do not write off the dub. There is some really good dubbing being done out there, much much better than, say, 20 years ago.
@@jacksan1 For sure, I'm only speaking from the perspective of non-Japanese speakers, so I'm in no way criticising the Japanese voice actors (I think as always they did a stellar job) nor am I criticising the accuracy of the translation, merely how natural or fitting that translation sounds within context when it comes to reading a dialogue/monologue in English. But here the English translation in the subtitles just never felt natural or dynamic enough for me (I think I've seen 2 versions of translated subs), where as the English dub, not only are the characters vernacular much more fitting which helps with immersion, they manage to keep and even improve on the floweriness of the writing with a more interesting and diverse vocabulary( not to mention, personally the dub really helps a lot when I don't have to read with eyes full of tears lmao, I wish I was joking). I also don't like the hardcore "sub vs dub" arguments, I think its not as simple as either the dub or the sub always being better than the other. I think I'm personally biased towards dub in general, because a language I understand being spoken is just more engaging and immersive to me, but I can definitely admit there are times when the subs just give an overall better experience because of the incredible talent of the Japanese voice actors (a few recent examples are Attack on Titan & Demon Slayer). I'm also not a fan of the "original voice is always better" arguments, since these are animated characters after all, they don't technically have an "original voice". I grew up with watching everything with Hungarian dub, as that was the only language I knew and understood, so for the longest time that was the "original" to me. But this can get way more tricky with the theme of the show as well. Are the characters depicted Japanese? Are are they ...idk..maybe Russian? Is it a fantasy world setting? What even is their "original language"? Is there a cultural relevance to their language being depicted? Is the language being depicted important from the perspective of the plot or does it serve a narrative purpose at all? Sorry, I just think these are all interesting things to think about haha.
@@SidViicious Oh yes, I understand the importance of the flow of the language versus merely propagating information. Subtitles have a tendency of getting truncated because of the time-available-to-read issue and as such are bound to be lacking in the nuanced tones. Dubbing has at times its own issue of filling in the time available because of the mismatch in time required between the languages. A very interesting study of the language gap and how to subtitle/dub is in an anime movie "A Silent Voice." I just happen to also know the Japanese Sign Language, so it was fascinating to see that movie. In a highlight scene (just in case you haven't seen the movie I try not to give away too much) where the deaf girl and her hearing friend converse, the communication there was represented for the audience in these four formats (all from Netflix US) : (a) JSL (b) Japanese verbal together with JSL (c) English (or another language) subtitle (d) English (or another) dub. Here is what was actually said in those four formats respectively: (a) "You help me live" (b) "I want you to help me live" (c) "I want you to help me live" (d) "I was hoping that maybe you could teach me how to live" Okay, you can see the the dub (d) is rather a departure from what was actually being said whereas the subtitle was right on the money with (b). I can only guess what happened to the dub version (Netflix dub), but my hunch is that they were trying to fill in the time that was very quickly dispatched by (a)(b) and (c). In doing so, they outdid themselves, in my opinion, to the extent that it changed the nuance of the scene. The correct presentation in that scene was to be direct because the JSL communication, the first language for this scene, was that way. Incidentally, that doesn't mean that the subtitles for "A Silent Voice" are perfect. In one version I saw, for (c) above, the subtitle completely mistranslated it to read "I want to help you live," totally turning the dialogue on its head.
